THE SKY IS FALLING: AN EXAMINATION OF BROILER CONTRACT DESIGN AND GROWER REVENUES AgEcon
Thomsen, Michael R.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Rodriquez, Angela.
A math program is used to examine an integrators problem of assigning broiler growers into settlement pools. The integrator varies the size and frequency of flock placements by grower ability. This differentiates grower incentives by ability. Which growers receive the strongest incentives depends on amount of excess grow-out capacity.

The Potential Effects on United States Agriculture of an Avian Influenza Outbreak AgEcon
Brown, Scott; Madison, Daniel; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Clark, F. Dustan.
The U.S. poultry industry has spent considerable resources to date preparing for an outbreak of avian influenza in this country. This research quantifies the potential effects of two alternative avian influenza scenarios on the poultry industry. In addition, this research looks at effects on other agriculture sectors including the loss of feed demand from an outbreak and the impacts on aggregate measures like farm income and consumer food expenditures. The economic sector model maintained by the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) is employed for these scenarios.

Estimating a Demand Function for Poultry Litter AgEcon
Carreira, Rita I.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
Excess poultry litter could be a sustainable source of crop nutrients outside of nutrient-saturated regions if crop farmers are willing to utilize it. Using nearly 150 observations of actual poultry litter purchases in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri we estimate a demand function for poultry litter produced in northwest Arkansas.

PRODUCTION DISTORTIONS IN THE SLOVAKIAN GRAIN SECTOR RESULTING FROM AGRICULTURAL SUBSIDIES AgEcon
Tothova, Monika; LaFerney, Preston E.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
A Policy Analysis Method, based on social benefit-cost analysis, is applied to five production areas of the Slovak Republic to analyze production distortions resulting from direct systematic subsidies in Slovakia. Three grains are analyzed: wheat, barley, and corn. Results indicate that currently applied policies have significant distortion effects, but those effects are not homogeneous across commodities and production areas.

Location of Production and Consolidation in the Processing Industry: The Case of Poultry AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
The poultry industry is the most vertically integrated of U.S. agriculture and food production and is rapidly progressing toward being one of the most concentrated. In 2002, the top 15 broiler states accounted for 94.4% of U.S. production. From 1982-2002, the top four broiler firms had a fivefold increase in Ready-to-Cook (R-T-C) pounds, a tripling of plants and four-and eight-firm concentration ratio increases of 27.9% to 48.2% and 44.1% to 66.6%. In a broad sense, chicken became more affordable, appealing, and available; total R-T-C pounds increased from 234 to 663 million pounds between 1982 and 2002.

Valuation of Temp-Time's Fresh-Check® Indicator on Perishable Food Products in Belgium AgEcon
Fortin, Corey; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
Consumers are becoming acutely attentive to the factors that influence food safety and food wholesomeness. The food industry is well regulated, yet there is still illness that results from contaminated fresh food products. Recent food contamination outbreaks and concerns with how food is grown have created an almost hypersensitive food consumer. The TempTime Corporation is a leading international manufacturer in time-temperature sensitive indicators for fresh food products. This company's aim is to provide consumers with more information about exactly what happens to their product from the initial packaging of the product to the time of consumption. Their product, called Fresh-Check®, is about the size of a postage stamp, and is affixed to the outer...

PRODUCER WELFARE CHANGES FROM MEAT AND POULTRY RECALLS AgEcon
Shiptsova, Rimma; Thomsen, Michael R.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
The number and volume of meat and poultry recalls has increased substantially in recent years. This is likely due to regulatory emphasis on foodborne illness resulting in an increased frequency of testing for pathogens. We use an equilibrium-displacement model to examine the effects of recall costs on the beef, pork, and poultry industries. Results suggest that higher recall costs may have actually increased producer surplus to the broiler industry because of consumer substitution among products and that most losses resulting from recalls are accruing to the beef and pork industries.

Household Expenditure Patterns for Carbohydrate Sources in Russia AgEcon
Shiptsova, Rimma; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Holcomb, Rodney B..
This study provides a unique view of the demand for carbohydrate sources in Russia at the household level. The data used in this analysis were obtained from a 1996 survey in eight Russian metropolitan areas. An almost ideal demand system (AIDS) model is used to examine the expenditures for potatoes, bread, flour, rice, and pasta. The impacts of household demographic factors on the consumption of carbohydrates are also discussed.

A Comparative Assessment of the Broiler:Corn Ratio and Its Impact on Broiler Processors' Profitability AgEcon
Hamm, Sandra J.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; McKenzie, Andrew M..
Input prices for broiler production, particularly corn, are becoming increasingly volatile due to increasing competition for corn from ethanol and biofuels production suggesting volatility in poultry profits will follow indicator of profits relating feed input prices and broiler meat output prices, such as a Broiler:corn ratios. Total chicken exports, total chicken ready-to-cook production, number of eggs set, number of chicks placed, and cold storage chicken inventory are used to estimate. Utilizing a distributed lag model, seventeen years of data for three Broiler:corn ratios, broiler exports, egg set, chick placements, cold storage stocks, and ready-to-cook broiler production were utilized to estimate stock share price for four major broiler producers.

Too Litter, Too Late: Economic Logistics of Transporting Nutrient-Rich Poultry Litter Out of Nutrient-Saturated Regions AgEcon
Carreira, Rita I.; Young, Kenneth B.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
Export of excess litter from concentrated animal production regions has become a pressing issue. A break even price for poultry litter in nutrient-deficient areas was identified through a math programming model using willingness to pay data from crop producers. Results indicate that a $16 subsidy is needed to sustain a long-term poultry litter market.

COST, INPUT AND MARKET SURVEY RESULTS OF THE TEXAS FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY AgEcon
Wildenthal, Marie; Capps, Oral, Jr.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr..
State governments are concerned with economic development because the condition of their well being determines residents' standard of living. Therefore, state governments are interested in strategies for strengthening their economies. States with substantial agricultural production can implement a strategy of maintaining or increasing markets for that production, positively affecting all of the aforementioned measures. In some states, the focus has been to "add value" to raw agricultural commodities. Texas's food processing industry is the focus of this research. A survey was conducted to determine the cost components of Texas food processors, the percent of purchases from Texas, and reasons for these purchases. This article summarizes the results of...

Which Broiler Part is the Best Part? AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; McKenzie, Andrew M.; Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Predominance of production and marketing contracts in the broiler industry suggests a traditional analysis of price relationships might no longer be appropriate. In this study, markets for broiler cuts are defined as spatial. Results of a vector autoregressive regression analysis of monthly USDA data from 1987 to 2000 verify the price relationship between white meat and whole broiler prices. Price shocks in the boneless skinless breast market have a greater effect than dark meat shocks, suggesting this market is most important in price transmission. These results will assist industry participants to form more effective marketing and pricing strategies, thus adding efficiency to the market.

IMPLICIT PRICE ESTIMATION OF RICE QUALITY ATTRIBUTES FOR ASIAN AMERICANS AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Rister, M. Edward.
Product placement survey data for 192 Asian-American households in Houston were used to analyze the value of rice quality attributes via the Consumer Goods Characteristics model (CGCM). Five rice varieties were used for this study: domestic Lemont, Jasmine 85, Toro II, and two different Thai import varieties. For each variety, marginal implicit prices were calculated at the means for seven characteristics: color, texture, aroma, stickiness, flavor, aftertaste, and moisture.

A STUDY OF ASIAN-AMERICAN RICE DEMAND IN HOUSTON, TEXAS AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Rister, M. Edward.
Responses to a product placement study of five long-grain rice varieties in 192 Asian-American households in Houston, Texas were utilized to estimate a quality-adjusted price model for rice demand. Quantity-dependent demand functions were estimated using actual price, quality-adjusted price, and no price scenarios. Results indicate that, although price was statistically significant, it explained very little of the variation in the quantity of rice demanded; further, income was not significant in determining rice demand for Asian Americans. Their demand appears to be driven primarily by ethnic and cultural considerations and household characteristics. Implications for retail marketing are discussed.
