The aim of this study is to model the seaweed species distribution with respect to environmental parameters. We focused on fixed species of algae, such as fucoids. Firstly, we identified environmental parameters, such as substratum nature, immersion time, exposure, etc., which determine the seaweed distribution. Secondly, we used field sampling to compute the distribution laws for seaweed according to the environmental parameters selected. Thirdly, we used the distribution laws and the environmental parameters to perform predictive mapping of seaweed belts with a fuzzy logic method. The study undertaken during the 1994-1998 planning contract on the Breton fishing fleet made it possible to underscore the size of the economic activity in regional territorial waters: More than 85% of the ships work there. This space, which is a matter of national sovereignty, is mainly managed at the regional level. The topographical and hydrological complexity of submarine canyons, coupled with high substratum heterogeneity, make them ideal environments for cold-water coral (CWC) habitats. These habitats, including reefs, are thought to provide important functions for many organisms. The canyons incising the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay have distinct morphological differences from the north to the south. Un des aspects de l'étude écologique d'avant-projet du site marémoteur du golfe normano-breton confié par EDF au CNEXO a consisté à identifier les peuplements benthiques de la zone intertidale de la baie du Mont-St-Michel. L'idée directrice a été de définir les différentes composantes faunistiques de la baie en fonction~ notamment la nature du substrat et du niveau bathymétrique. L'analyse des données bibliographiques a fait rapidement apparaître le manque de données biologiques dans la partie orientale de la baie, aussi l'étude a-t-elle été centrée sur ce secteur. |

This paper addresses the need for a finer description of coastal zone relief that is currently of interest for benthic habitat mapping. For example, the distribution of seaweed species in the tidal zone will mostly depend on the terrain's hypsometric level, slope and orientation. These parameters can be used in predictive distribution models, or more simply merged with 2.5/3D imagery to enhance interpretation. The study of the sublittoral bottoms near the Flamanville site has been tackled in the pilot studies (1976) and project studies (1977 - 1979) in the aim of assessing benthic populations.
