Twentysix species of sea anemones (Actiniaria) collected in Galicia, northwestern Spain are present in the collection of the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis. They are listed and discussed. The cnidom of seventeen species is surveyed. Diadumene cincta is not a recent immigrant in western Europe. Sagartia luciae is (re)assigned to the genus Diadumene. The presence of Sagartia troglodytes in the Mediterranean is doubtful at best.

Data are presented on the diet of Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) resulting from stomach investigations based on 18 birds from Hierro (Canary Islands), 5 from Selvagem Grande (Selvagens or Salvage Islands), 2 from São Miguel and 1 from São Jorge (Azores), collected between 1977 and 1981. These data confirm the general idea that this shearwater feeds principally on fish and squid. The gut contents of five juvenile individuals of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (L.) from waters around Madeira, Selvagem Grande (Selvagens Islands) and São Miguel (Azores) were analysed macro- and microscopically. Macroscopic investigations showed that epipelagic salps (e.g., Pyrosoma atlanticum Péron) and gastropods (e.g., Ianthina spp. and Pterotrachea spp.) constituted an important part of the food remains present in these loggerheads. The first Western Palearctic record of a Red-footed Booby Sula sula (L., 1766), a brown whitetailed morph observed on Cima (Cape Verde Islands), is described. The status of this species in the tropical South Atlantic Ocean is evaluated. At present, Fernando de Noronha is the only South Atlantic stronghold of the species (ca. 4000 individuals; cf. A new genus and species of sea anemone, Onubactis rocioi gen. et spec. nov. (Actiniidae) is described from the Atlantic coast of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The main features of Onubactis rocioi are: a smooth to corrugate scapus, a delicate scapulus provided with a ruff of non-adherent papillate outgrowths, absence of acrorhagi, more mesenteries distally than proximally, a weak diffuse sphincter, and presence of numerous spirocysts in the pedal disc. A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Bunodes biscayensis Fischer, 1874, a species of Actiniaria described from Moulleau, Arcachon, south-western coast of France, and never recorded since, was rediscovered in July 1985 and found again in 1986 and 1987 in several localities along the French "Côte Basque" between the mouth of the river Adour and St. Jean-de-Luz. The genus Amphiprion Bloch & Schneider, 1801, is represented in the Seychelles by two species, A. akallopisos Bleeker, 1853, and the endemic A. fuscocaudatus Allen, 1972. Throughout its distributional range Amphiprion akallopisos has exclusively been recorded to associate with the clownfish anemones Heteractis magnifica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1833) and Stichodactyla mertensii Brandt, 1835. The importance of ornithological observations with respect to Columbus' discovery of America as recorded in the "Diario del descubrimiento" is recognized. The fact that his first and crucial crossing of the Atlantic coincided with the autumn migration may have contributed to its success. Members of the crab family Dromiidae tend to cover their carapace mostly with sponges or colonial tunicates. More rarely are used other objects or organisms such as solitary Tunicata, Zoantharia (= encrusting anemones), valves of Bivalvia, etc.; a review of these is presented. A new association of a dromiid crab Lauridromia intermedia (Laurie, 1906) and an actinian Nemanthus annamensis Carlgren, 1943, is described and discussed. Lauridromia intermedia is recorded for the first time from the continental shelf of East Africa.

The occurrence of the sea anemone Sagartia elegans var. miniata, var. nivea and var. venusta in considerable numbers at three localities in the Netherlands is reported upon. Previous records of the species in Dutch coastal waters are reviewed. Most of these are considered as doubtful. Characters to distinguish S. elegans from S. troglodytes are discussed. Attempts are made to relate local occurrence of S. elegans with temperature data. Sagartia elegans is an autochthonous species in the Netherlands but its numbers vary considerably, and populations probably have no permanent character. Since the study of the genus Corallimorphus was started, the main taxonomic character used to separate species has been the ratio of the number of marginal tentacles to that of the discal ones. Polyps with a marginal:discal (m:d) tentacle ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 collected by the “Challenger” expedition were described as two distinct species, Corallimorphus rigidus and Corallimorphus profundus respectively (Moseley, 1877a, 1877b; Hertwig, 1882, 1888). The sea anemone species Isactinernus quadrilobatus Carlgren, 1918, and Synactinernus flavus Carlgren, 1918, which were described in new monotypic genera from few specimens collected in southern Japan, are synonymized, based on many more specimens from the South Pacific. As well as the geographic range, the depth range of this species has been extended to 110-700 m. The species had been distinguished primarily on whether the oral disc had four lobes (I. quadrilobatus) or eight (Synactinernus flavus) – we conclude their number is largely related to size of the animal. Other features that Carlgren had used to differentiate the genera (and species) are inconsistently present and do not correlate with lobe number.
