INTRODUCTION The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie material of Brachyorrhos albus (L., 1758), which had been on loan to Dr. S. B. McDowell, New York, was returned to us with the remark that reg.no. RMNH 48 from Java certainly did not belong to that species. Dr. McDowell suggested it might be an Atractus, and following his suggestion I examined this specimen. It soon became evident that Dr. McDowell had been right and that the specimen did belong to Atractus trilineatus Wagler, a species only known from Trinidad, eastern Venezuela and western Guyana (Hoogmoed, 1979: 275). HISTORY The specimen concerned (RMNH 48) belongs to the oldest part of the collection of the RMNH. It turned out to have been investigated by many ancient authors and it was discovered... |

A new species of toad, related with Bufo calamita Laurenti and B. viridis Laurenti, is described from the southern part of Morocco. Combining the data of the available specimens with literature records it was established that the new species probably ranges from the Sous valley southwards to Cape Bojador in the Spanish Sahara. The species seems to be restricted to semi-arid habitats. Tadpoles which probably belong to this species are described. Keys for the identification of adult toads and for the tadpoles are given. |

In this paper we list seven species of caecilians known to occur in Surinam. An eighth species, the aquatic Typhlonectes compressicaudus, is likely to be found in Surinam, but there are no voucher specimens. We report the rediscovery of the rare Rhinatrema bivittatum, now known from four specimens, one each from Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Surinam. Microcaecilia taylori, described as a new species from Sipaliwini, is characterized mainly by a complete lack of secondary annuli, a feature which necessitated rediagnosis of the genus Microcaecilia. A Microcaecilia from the Lely Mountains differs from all known specimens of the genus by its larger size. The specimen is either a geographic variant of Microcaecilia unicolor, or it is an undescribed... |

The Mission Radeau des Cimes to Petit Saut, French Guiana, offered the opportunity to study the herpetofauna of the canopy of the tropical rainforest, an area hardly studied sofar. Two localities at heights of 30 and 35 m could be studied, whereas data on a third site were obtained through information from other participants. The herpetological results of the research in the canopy were meagre. Only the frog Hyla leucophyllata (Beireis) and the lizard Mabuya bistriata (Spix) were observed in the canopy. Additionally the terrestrial herpetofauna was studied extensively and turned out to contain some species that had not been reported before from French Guiana. Also, for many species new distribution data within French Guiana were obtained. Le Mission Radeau... |

INTRODUCTION During a recent collecting trip, financed by grant W 956-2 from WOTRO (Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research), I spent 47 days (22 August-7 October 1968) on the Sipaliwini savannah in southern Surinam. The Sipaliwini savannah is part of an extensive savannah that covers the watershed between the Sipaliwini River in Surinam and the Paroe River in Brazil. Though the watershed is very low, the waters of Sipaliwini and Paroe Rivers never seem to make contact, as is the case with other rivers on the Rupununi savannah and in southern French Guiana. About one tenth of this savannah is situated in Surinam, the remainder in Brazil (see inset fig. 3). G. Mann (in Fittkau et al., 1968) calls this a tropical wet savannah and... |

Three specimens of Atractus natans were found during fieldwork in the “Reserva Mamirauá”, Amazonas and a fourth one in the “Estação Científica Ferreira Penna”, Floresta de Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil. The specimens from Mamirauá were all collected in floating logs in várzea forest during the period of flooding. The new species is small (maximum total length 308 mm) with a coniform head, has 17-17-17 smooth dorsals, without apical pits, male lacking pre-anal keels, ventrals 136-162, caudals 19-25, anal undivided. One or two postoculars, loreal 1.6 –2.8 times as long as high, frontal triangular, wider than long. Maxillary teeth 5-6. The hemipenis is bilobed, with bifurcated sulcus spematicus, capitulum with calyces covered by very small spines, body covered by... |

During research on material recently collected in Guyana and in Venezuelan Guiana, several specimens of the rare toad Bufo nasicus Werner, thus far only known from the holotype without known origin, were discovered. On the basis of this material the species is redescribed and some notes on its natural history are given. The species is a member of the Bufo typhonius-group. |

In the present paper Hyla ornatissima Noble is removed from the synonymy of Hyla granosa Boulenger, and resurrected as a separate species on the basis of morphological, ecological and acoustical differences. Another relative of this group occurring in Guiana is Hyla sibleszi Rivero. Because of its superficial resemblance with these frogs Hyla punctata (Schneider), of another species-group, is also treated. All four species are extensively described, data on life history and distribution are given. H. sibleszi, so far only known from the type material and some associated specimens, is reported from several new localities in Venezuela and Guyana. It is suggested that the function of the intricate dorsal pattern of H. ornatissima serves to protect the animal... |

INTRODUCTION In a recent paper, Lynch & Freeman (1966) discussed the systematic position of a small hylid frog, Allophryne ruthveni, described in 1926 by Gaige from British Guiana. They tentatively placed it in the family Hylidae, because it shows a better agreement with that family than with any other. The material available to them consisted of six specimens, all from "the foothills of the northeastern face of the Guiana Massif" in Guyana (formerly British Guiana). Since a few years the present author has been engaged in an investigation of the herpetofauna of Surinam (Dutch Guiana). During these studies, a fair number of A. ruthveni specimens was examined. In addition to the locality, of most of these the collecting date and some scanty notes on the... |

The study of snaks from the Guianan region got an early start in 1705 when several species were pictured by Merian. As relatively large proportion of the snakes described by Linnaeus originated from Surinam. Interest for and knowledge of this group of animals steadily increased in the 18th and 19th century (80 species known at the turn of the century), but only in the second part of the 20 th century detailed studies of snake faunas from (part of) the Guianan region appeared. No such study for the entire area has been published till now. At present a total of 134 species of snakes, belonging to 159 taxa, is known. Only 19.4% is endemic, the majority (43.4%) belong to species with an Amazonian distribution. Seventeen species (12.7%) are venemous, ten... |

Study of the type specimens of B. caeruleostictus Günther, 1859 and B. chanchanensis Fowler, 1913, and of fresh material showed that B. chanchanensis is a junior subjective synonym of B. caeruleostictus. Probably it is a member of the B. guttatus group. B. caeruleocellatus Fowler, 1913 is a junior subjective synonym of B. haematiticus Cope, 1862. New material of B. hypomelas Boulenger, 1913 is reported from NW Ecuador, the species is redescribed, and it is shown that this is a valid taxon, not the juvenile of B. blombergi Myers & Funkhouser, 1951 as suggested by Lynch, in Frost (1985). It is doubted whether B. intermedius Günther originates from Ecuador. It probably is a Central American or Mexican species of the B. valliceps Wiegmann, 1833 group. A... |

An evaluation of the existing SPIX/WAGLER type material in the museums in Munich and Leiden is given. It transpired that a considerable part of the type material, which was thought to have been destroyed during the second world war, is still extant. The material is described briefly, its presenttaxonomic status is discussed and, where necessary, lectotypes are selected. Arising from this survey a number of nomenclatural changes are necessary. Natrix cinnamomea Wagler is here considered a species incertae sedis, possibly a species of Pseutes, which contrasts with the current opinion that this is a species of Chironius. BotbropsMegaera Wagler and B. leucurusWagler are consideredconspecifie and should be known under the name B. leucurus Wagler. Both B. Furia... |
