HETEROSCEDASTICITY IN BROILER MEAT EXPENDITURE PATTERN ESTIMATION AgEcon
Huang, Chung L.; Raunikar, Robert; Tyan, Holly L..
This study presents the empirical results of estimating the household broiler meat expenditure pattern in the western region using the 1977-78 United States Department of Agriculture Nationwide Food Consumption Survey. The effects of assuming homoscedasticity and heteroscedasticity in the tobit model on resulting estimates are discussed in terms of estimated coefficients, marginal effects, and elasticities. Based on the strength of the sample data, the results suggest that specification of the homoscedastic model should be rejected in favor of the heteroscedastic model, implying that the validity of homoscedasticity should not be routinely accepted without testing when applying tobit procedure to analyze survey data.

Estimation of a Composite Food Demand System for the United States—A Revisit AgEcon
Luo, Haobo; Huang, Chung L.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
We revisit the composite food demand system for the United States covering the period from 1953 to 2008. We were unable to produce elasticity measures that are as close or similar to those reported in Huang and Haidacher (1983), although the same demand system specification was employed. Our results based on the more recent data set of 1982-2008 show that most of the own-price elasticities are negative and statistically significant, varying from -.1861 (poultry) to -.9476 (nonfood). In general, the estimated own-price elasticities appear to be smaller in magnitude or more inelastic than previously reported. In contrast, we estimate the significant income elasticities for food vary from .5172 (dairy) to 4.6687 (fish), while Huang and Haidaicher (1983)...

ESTIMATION OF A DEMAND SYSTEM WITH LIMITED DEPENDENT VARIABLES AgEcon
Huang, Chung L.; Yen, Steven T..
The study employs the full-information maximum-likelihood method to estimate a censored translog demand system. U.S. household consumption of steak, roast, and ground beef are used to demonstrate the application of the estimation procedure. The proposed methodology produces more efficient estimates than the popular two-step procedures found in demand literature.

CONSUMER SELECTION OF RETAIL OUTLETS IN BUYING PECANS AgEcon
Florkowski, Wojciech J.; You, Zhikang; Huang, Chung L..
The study identifies differences in consumer characteristics and the selection of the type of a retail outlet in pecan purchases. Within the framework of utility maximization, an empirical model is specified and estimated using multinomial logit. The estimation is based on data collected through a nationwide survey. Calculated marginal probabilities show the importance of age, household income, and household size among the important consumer characteristics that influence the selection of a retail outlet. Employment and the timing of pecan purchases also influence the use of a specific type of retail outlet. In particular, mail-order purchases are made by older persons with higher incomes and larger households in comparison to purchases at grocery stores...

COMPARISONS OF HISPANIC HOUSEHOLDS' DEMAND FOR MEAT WITH OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS AgEcon
Lanfranco, Bruno A.; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Huang, Chung L..
The objective of this research was to analyze the demand patterns of Hispanic households for meats in comparison with other ethnic groups using data from the 1998 Consumer Expenditure Survey. A system of demand equations of the LinQuad form were estimated for ten meat products using an incomplete system of censored equations. Hispanic households showed a clear preference for beef. Price, income and household size elasticities were estimated for each meat product by ethnic group. The demand for ground beef was the most income inelastic product regardless of ethnicity. Household size had a positive effect on the probability of consuming a particular meat product but a negative effect on actual item expenditures.

MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF NON-PRICE PROMOTION ON U.S. POULTRY MEAT PRODUCT EXPORTS AgEcon
Jan, Man-Ser; Huang, Chung L.; Epperson, James E..
A complete US poultry meat export demand system is estimated. A gradually switching dynamic advertising AIDS model is assessed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-price export promotions for US poultry meat products in major targeted international markets. The export demand elasticities are estimated and compared over time, and among regions/countries.

PREVALENCE OF CHILDHOOD OVERWEIGHT AMONG LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AgEcon
Huang, Chung L.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
The study investigates variations in children’'s body mass indices among low income households using the endogenous switching regression analysis to account for the potential self-selectivity bias. The result provides an important policy implication for public health officials and educators with respect to the development of nutrition education and information delivery.

MODELING FRESH ORGANIC PRODUCE CONSUMPTION: A GENERALIZED DOUBLE-HURDLE MODEL APPROACH AgEcon
Zhang, Feng; Huang, Chung L.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
Using actual retail data, this study is intended to profile consumers' social economic characteristics related to the growth of the fresh organic produce market with a generalized double-hurdle model. The nested test shows that the above model performs significantly better than Cragg's independent double-hurdle model and Tobit model.

Organic Price Premiums Paid for Fresh Tomatoes and Apples by U.S. Households: Evidence from Nielsen Homescan Data AgEcon
Zhang, Feng; Epperson, James E.; Huang, Chung L.; Houston, Jack E..
Using multivariate regression on data composed of prices, produce characteristics, demographics, and interactions, this study investigates organic price premiums paid by U.S. consumers for fresh tomatoes and apples, two of the top organic produce sellers, and identifies factors explaining variation in price premiums. The econometric problem of each buyer having multiple records in the purchase data is addressed in the estimation procedure.

FOOD EXPENDITURE PATTERNS OF THE HISPANIC POPULATION IN THE U.S. AgEcon
Lanfranco, Bruno A.; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Huang, Chung L..
Food expenditure patterns were examined for Hispanic households in the U.S. Engel curves for three food categories: food eaten at-home, food eaten away-from-home, and for total food, were estimated using four different functional forms. Confidence intervals for income and household elasticities were computed and results compared with previous research.

U.S. HOUSEHOLD CONSUMPTION OF FRESH FRUITS AgEcon
He, Hua; Huang, Chung L.; Houston, Jack E..
This study uses the 1987-88 U.S. Department of Agriculture Nationwide Food Consumption Survey data to analyze the impacts of income, prices, and selected socioeconomic characteristics on household consumption of fresh fruits. Results suggest that fresh fruits are considered economic necessities, with own prices significantly influencing consumption. Cross-price effects are generally weak and insignificant, but the number of adults in the age group 18-64 is an important determinant of household consumption of fresh fruits. While nutrition information and household savings have significant, positive influences on most fresh fruit consumption, the presence of a working wife has a significant and negative influence.
