The workshop on age reading of Saithe (Pollachius virens) (WKARPV) was held in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, from 26 to 29 May 2015. The meeting was co-chaired by Kélig Mahé (France) and Jane A. Godiksen (Norway), and included eight age readers from four countries. The objectives of this first workshop were to review, document and make recom-mendations on current methods of aging saithe (Pollachius virens). This workshop was preceded by an otolith exchange in 2013, which was undertaken using WebGR. Participants who hadn’t taken part in the exchange were asked to annotate the images in the months prior to the workshop, however, due to problems with accessing WebGR only a limited amount of the readers managed to do this in time. The otolith collection included... |

The Working Group on Southern Horse Mackerel, Anchovy and Sardine (WGHANSA) met in Bilbao (Spain), 24–29 June 2017, and was chaired by Lionel Pawlowski (France). There were 15 participants from France, Portugal, Spain and UK by correspondence. The main task was to assess the status and to provide short-term predictions for the stocks of anchovy in Division 9.a, for sardine in divisions 8.c and 9.a, and in divisions 8.abd and Subarea 7, and for horse mackerel (T. trachurus) in Division 9.a and blue jack Mackerel (T. picturatus) in 10 (Azores). Assessments were updated according to the stock annexes. Four stocks have been benchmarked in 2017. Some leftover work from the benchmark was carried out prior and completed during the meeting. Some unexpected... |

The European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) aims to protect the marine environment and to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES) by 2020 and explicitly requires fishing activity to be managed to ensure that conservation objectives for the broader marine ecosystem might be achieved. The Commission Decision (EU) 2017/848 sets out that populations of commercial fish and shellfish (MSFD Descriptor 3 (D3)) are within safe biological limits and exhibit a population age and size distribution that is indicative of a healthy stock. Member States shall establish a list of commercially-exploited fish and shellfish to be assessed and reported for MSFD Descriptor 3. This decision provides criteria for the development of these lists and these lists... |

The workshop WKSHARK4, Workshop on Length-Based Indicators and Reference Points for Elasmobranchs, chaired by Pascal Lorance (France) and Jan Jaap Poos (Netherlands), was held in Nantes, France 6–9 February 2018. Twelve participants contributed by presence and six more attended daily visio-conference and participated by correspondence. The overall objective was to analyse the appropriateness of length-based indicators (LBIs) for assessment of the status of elasmobranch stocks. The concerns raised by WGEF in 2017 regarding the use of LBIs were investigated (Chapter for ToR a), a simulation approach based on a Leslie matrix was taken to investigate the possible values of LBIs in unexploited and exploited populations, this was mostly applied to the... |

ICES advises on potentially useful future indicators for MSFD Descriptor 4 (foodwebs). These include some indicators that are currently being implemented (including the large fish indicator). A roadmap with a timetable towards implementing these indicators is suggested. In addition, this advice summarizes ICES work on the large fish indicator. |
