Price Pooling and the Gains from Hedging: Application to a Swedish Grain Cooperative AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey; Nilsson, Tomas K.H.; Andersson, Hans.
Optimal hedging strategies are analyzed for a cooperative operating a price pooling system in the presence of price and quantity risk. A three-period model, accounting for default risk and storage, is developed. Hedging allows the cooperative to increase the pool price offered to farmers by 2.8 - 4% for moderate risk parameters.

COMPETITION AND POLICY CONFLICTS IN CANADA-U.S. BARLEY TRADE AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey; Wilson, William W..
Changes in policy, institutional and competitive environments have led to increased trade and a rise in trade tensions in the Canada-U.S. barely market. These tensions stem from policies and marketing institutions that have evolved independently in these two countries. Results from a detailed spatial equilibrium model of the Canada- U.S. barley market are presented in this article. Simulations are used to quantify effects of U.S. import restrictions; removal of Canadian rail subsidies, different Export Enhancement Program (EEP) subsidy levels, restoration of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres to U.S. production, and retention of Canadian Wheat Board control over Canadian barley sales—all of which affect trade flows in the barley sector.

The Economics of Testing for Biotech Grain: Application to StarLink Corn AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey; Lin, William W..
StarLink corn, a variety not approved for human use, disrupted the marketing system in 2000 because of inadvertent commingling. This paper provides an overview of the economics of testing grain for biotech content. What are the risks facing buyers and sellers, and how are these influenced by testing protocols? How do market premiums and discounts, testing costs, and prior beliefs affect the incentives to test? A conceptual model is developed in which sellers choose whether to pre-test grain prior to shipment. Through simulation analysis, we illustrate the impact of market premiums and other variables on testing incentives and buyer risk.

ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT IN WHEAT AND BARLEY: 1998-2000 AgEcon
Nganje, William E.; Johnson, D. Demcey; Wilson, William W.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Bangsund, Dean A.; Tiapo, Napoleon M..
Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, has been a severe problem for wheat and barley producers since 1993. This study provides an update of economic losses suffered by wheat and barley producers in scab-affected regions in the United States. Emphasis is placed on estimating direct and secondary economic impacts of yield and price losses suffered by wheat and barley producers from 1998 to 2000. Nine states are included in the analysis for three wheat classes. Three of the nine states were also used for the analysis of malting and feed barley. The cumulative direct economic losses from FHB in hard red spring (HRS) wheat, soft red winter (SRW) wheat, durum wheat, and barley is estimated at $870 million from 1998 through 2000. The combined...

WHEAT CLEANING DECISIONS AT COUNTRY ELEVATORS AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey; Wilson, William W..
This article presents a mathematical programming model of wheat cleaning and blending decisions at a country elevator. Simulations are performed to illustrate the sensitivity of cleaning to selected variables, including the value of screenings, transportation costs, and market discounts for excess dockage. In addition, the model is used to assess the impact of including dockage in the grade standards for wheat.

SHORTFALLS IN 1997 NET FARM INCOME IN NORTH DAKOTA (Prepared for Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad) AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D.; Swenson, Andrew L.; Johnson, D. Demcey; Flaskerud, George K..
North Dakota net farm income declined in 1997 due to adverse weather conditions and low prices. The total income loss in 1997 was estimated to be $394 million, which was divided into $290 million due to weather and diseases, and $104 million due to lower-than-average prices. Net farm income losses were largest in Region 3 (Northeast), followed by Regions 1 (Northwest) and 6 (East Central). HRS wheat accounted for the largest income loss, followed by durum and barley.

Farm Level Effects of Counter-Cyclical Payments AgEcon
Makki, Shiva S.; Johnson, D. Demcey; Somwaru, Agapi.
The paper analyzes the role of counter-cyclical (CC) payments in stabilizing farm incomes and investigates whether the payments could affect farmers’ planting decisions. Our analysis, based on representative farmer approach, finds that CC payments provide a relatively modest enhancement to farm welfare. However, much depends on market price conditions, which change from year to year, and on base acreage (which is determined by planting history). The paper finds little evidence of interaction between revenue insurance and CC payments.

CANADIAN TRANSPORTATION AND GRAIN HANDLING: ISSUES AFFECTING THE NORTH AMERICAN BARLEY SECTOR AgEcon
Park, Joon J.; Wilson, William W.; Johnson, D. Demcey.
The Canadian grain handling and transportation system has undergone substantial change in recent years, particularly since the elimination of rail subsidies in 1995. Competitive pressures and branch line abandonment have forced many primary elevators to close, while scores of new high-throughput elevators have been constructed across the Prairies. Rationalization of the grain handling system and proposals for further deregulation of rail transportation are driven by the need to improve system efficiency. Policy recommendations of the Estey Report (notably, the elimination of rail rate caps, and 'port buying' by the Canadian Wheat Board) would have important consequences for the grain trade and are contentious issues within Canada. Changes in grain...

VALUATION OF NEW SPRING WHEAT VARIETIES: TRADEOFFS FOR GROWERS AND END-USERS (SUMMARY) AgEcon
Dahl, Bruce L.; Wilson, William W.; Johnson, D. Demcey; Nganje, William E..
Variety release decisions involve a number of tradeoffs, usually between grower and end-user characteristics as well as significant uncertainties about agronomic, quality, and economic variables. In this study, methodologies were developed to value tradeoffs for grower and end-user characteristics for wheat. The models capture effects of variability in agronomic, quality, and economic variables. The models were applied for three experimental varieties which have since been released and for two hypothetical varieties. Results indicate two of the experimental varieties provide improvements in grower and end-use value over most of the incumbents. Comparison of a risk adjusted portfolio model consisting of characteristics of end-use and grower values...

IMPORT DEMAND FOR MALT: A TIMES SERIES AND ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS AgEcon
Satyanarayana, Vidyashankara; Wilson, William W.; Johnson, D. Demcey.
European Union (EU) dominance of the world malt trade is thought to be due to quality advantages and/or due to export restitutions. A Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) was estimated for four major malt importing countries: Japan, Brazil, Philippines, and Venezuela. Elasticities of substitution for malt among different sources were computed. Results show that malt imported from the EU is least substitutable with malt from other sources, and demand for EU malt is less responsive to changes in price. Expenditure elasticities indicate that the four importers spend proportionately more on malt imports from the EU compared to malt from other sources. For these reasons, the study concludes that price subsidy-based export expansion...

SEGREGATION OF NON-BIOTECH CORN AND SOYBEANS: WHO BEARS THE COST? AgEcon
Lin, William W.; Johnson, D. Demcey.
This study focuses on the economics of segregating U.S. non-biotech corn and soybeans for shipments to Japan, the primary export market for U.S. non-biotech grains and oilseeds, as a case study. The purposes of this paper are two-fold: 1) to estimate price premiums that buyers in both the U.S. domestic and Japanese export markets were willing to pay for non-biotech corn and soybeans for the 2000-2002 crops; and 2) to examine who bears the cost of segregation.

Sorting and Blending Under Quality Uncertainty: Application to Wheat Protein AgEcon
Johnson, D. Demcey.
Quality uncertainty is of considerable interest to the grain industry. In this paper, uncertainty is incorporated in a model of grain blending decisions. A mixed-integer, nonlinear optimization problem is developed. Simulations illustrate the effect of crop quality on blending decisions, and the effect of blending activities on the distribution of protein within a wheat marketing channel.
