Vergleich von zwei unterschiedlichen Methoden der Körperkonditionsbeurteilung beim Milchvieh Organic Eprints
Isensee, Anne; Klocke, Peter; Bieber, Anna; Spengler, Anet; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Maurer, Veronika; Leiber, Florian.
Two different methods to reveal body condition scores (BCS), called independent BCS (iBCS) and dependent BCS (dBCS; similar to the method of Ferguson et al. 1994), were applied in 1111 Swiss Brown dairy cows. Ultrasound measurement of the back fat thickness (BFT) served as validation method. Aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of assessor’s subjective impression of the overall appearance of the cow on the scoring process. With 67.3% of the BFT variance, the dBCS with its consideration of the overall impression of the cow and its more open approach was more suitable to predict the subcutaneous fat appositions. The strictly formularized iBCS could only explain 47.3% of the BFT variance. The pin bone region was identified to cause the biggest...

Erfahrungen bei der Haltung horntragender Milchkühe im Laufstall – Probleme und Lösungsansätze in der Praxis Organic Eprints
Schneider, Claudia; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klocke, Peter; Knierim, Ute.
Loose housing systems are commonly designed for cows without horns. Farmers keeping horned herds are facing increased risks of injuries among the cows. Interviews were carried out on farms with 62 horned dairy herds in order to collect practical evidence on problems and suitable measures related to the keeping of loose housed horned cows. Most farmers see the feeding area, the cubicles and the waiting area before milking as problem areas. A possibility to securely lock all cows in the feeding rack and an easy retreat from the rack is regarded important. The cubicles should offer an exit to the front, which can be used by cows when attacked from behind. Generous space allowances in the waiting area as well as in the whole stable were recommended....

The QLIF project has targeted a variety of issues to make organic animal production (dairy cattle, pig, poultry) more safe, develop alternative methods to promote animal health and improve product quality. This workshop will discuss these aims as well as the QLIF achievements to date. It will also address our way of assessing the quality of our organic farms. We ask the question what the advantages are of doing this by looking at the output of a farm, such as yield, animal welfare and environmental issues. Alternatively, we also want to know what benefits there are in looking at how the farm is organised, via input factors such as housing design, nutrition, management quality. Two invited speakers will state their preference. Legislation, certification and...

Treatment of bovine sub-clinical mastitis with homeopathic remedies Organic Eprints
Klocke, Peter; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Heil, Fritz; Walkenhorst, Michael; Notz, Christophe.
Considering the positive results of homeopathic therapy of bovine mastitis, the presented study should evaluate the effects of two standardized homeopathic methods in sub-clinical mastitis using a prospective randomized double-blind placebo control study design. A number of 124 dairy cows from 17 herds with increased somatic cell count were selected and randomly associated to 5 treatment groups. Two groups received a peroral therapy with (a) a homeopathic combination over 5 days and (b) a single treatment with a homeopathic nosode (Tuberculinum). To each treatment group a placebo control group was established with the same treatment frequency. A fifth group served as an untreated control. The bacteriological cure rate after 4 and 8 weeks was 28% and the...

A pilot socio-economic analysis of QLIF dairy projects Organic Eprints
Nicholas, Dr. Phillipa; Lampkin, Dr. Nicolas; Leifert, Prof. Carlo; Butler, Dr. Gillian; Klocke, Peter; Wagenaar, J.P.T.M..
A pilot socio-economic impact assessment was carried out on three dairy projects within QLIF to identify the business, consumer and policy issues likely to influence the adoption of the innovations resulting from QLIF. A socio-economic analysis is pre-sented related to the key outcomes from the three projects which include: manage-ment systems to reduce mastitis and antibiotic use in organic dairy farms and how milk quality can be enhanced through high forage organic feeding systems. Due to a lack financial data costs had to be assumed based on other studies. The socio-economic analysis identified a significant number of potential economic and social implications of implementing strategies developed in the QLIF project that aim at increasing animal...

Treatment of Clinically Diagnosed Equine Sarcoid with a Mistletoe Extract (Viscum album austriacus) Organic Eprints
Christen-Clottu, Ophélie; Klocke, Peter; Burger, Dominik; Straub, Reto; Gerber, Vinzenz.
Background: Equine sarcoids (ES) are common, difficult to treat, and have high recurrence rates. Viscum album extracts (VAE) are used in human cancer treatment. Hypothesis: That therapy with VAE (Iscador P) is effective in the treatment of ES. Animals: Fifty-three horses (444 ES); 42 were treated with VAE or placebo as monotherapy; 11 were treated with VAE or placebo after selective excision of ES. Methods: Prospective, randomised, blinded, clinical trial. Horses were randomly assigned to treatment (VAE; n = 32) or control group (Placebo; n = 21). One milliliter of VAE (Iscador P) in increasing concentrations from 0.1 to 20 mg/mL or physiological NaCl solution was given SC 3 times a week over 105 days. Number, localization, and type of the ES were...

Impacts of feeding less food-competing feedstuffs to livestock on global food system sustainability Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Müller, Adrian; El-Hage Scialabba, Nadia; Hecht, Judith; Isensee, Anne; Erb, Karl-Heinz; Smith, Pete; Makkar, Harinder P.S.; Klocke, Peter; Leiber, Florian; Schwegler, Patrizia; Stolze, Matthias; Niggli, Urs.
Increasing efficiency in livestock production and reducing the share of animal products in human consumption are two strategies to curb the adverse environmental impacts of the livestock sector. Here,we explore the roomfor sustainable livestock production by modelling the impacts and constraints of a third strategy in which livestock feed components that compete with direct human food crop production are reduced. Thus, in the outmost scenario, animals are fed only from grassland and by-products from food production. We show that this strategy could provide sufficient food (equal amounts of human-digestible energy and a similar protein/calorie ratio as in the reference scenario for 2050) and reduce environmental impacts comparedwith the reference scenario...

Nosoden zum Trockenstellen – eine placebokontrollierte Blindstudie Organic Eprints
Fidelak, Christian; Berke, Michaela; Klocke, Peter; Spranger, Jörg; Hamann, Jörn; Heuwieser, Wolfgang.
In an organic dairy herd (250 cows) a homeopathic dry cow treatment should be evaluated while an antibiotic dry cow therapy (DCT) was totally abandoned. A ran-domized placebo-controlled double blind study with a herd specific nosode (D30) was conducted. Either 5 ml of the nosode (VG) or a placebo (KG) was orally administered in weekly intervals four times before drying off, at the day of calving and seven days post partum (p.p.). The efficacy of treatment was measured according to quarter foremilk samples at the days of treatment, six weeks p.p. and at the end of the 2nd and 3rd month of lactation. Data of 129 cows with 512 quarters (VG:n=65/260; KG:n=64/252) was evaluable. New intramammary infections (IMIn) cure rates and cases of clinical mastitis in...

Homöopathie statt Antibiotika: Feldstudie liefert erste Resultate Organic Eprints
Klocke, Peter; Garbe, Sylvia; Spranger, Joerg; Merck, Carl-Christian.

Hertzberg, Hubertus; Walkenhorst, Michael; Klocke, Peter.

Klocke, Peter; Staehli, Pamela; Notz, Christophe.

Organic conform udder health concepts. How to reduce therapies Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Notz, Christophe; Klocke, Peter; Spranger, Jörg; Heil, Fritz.
Both consumers and governments expect quality products from healthy organic livestock. In consequence, keeping farm animals healthy has the highest priority in veterinary work on organic farms. Different Swiss FiBL projects in mastitis of the last years were aimed in health concepts conform to organic livestock principles. One project includes 20 Farms (with an average of 15 cows per farm) of a Swiss high mountain region. It puts emphasis on milking hygiene, milking technology, mastitis treatment during lactation (homeopathy versus antibiosis) and dry-off treatment (homeopathy versus placebo and partially additional antibiotic). The overall result was a reduction of cows with a somatic cell count higher than 150’000/ml based on milk recording dates...

Comparison of a classical with a highly formularized body condition scoring system for dairy cattle Organic Eprints
Isense, A.; Leiber, F.; Bieber, A.; Spengler, A.; Ivemeyer, S.; Maurer, V.; Klocke, Peter.
Body condition scoring is a common tool to assess the subcutaneous fat reserves of dairy cows. Because of its subjectivity, which causes limits in repeatability, it is often discussed controversially. Aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of considering the cows overall appearance on the scoring process and on the validity of the results. Therefore, two different methods to reveal body condition scores (BCS), ‘independent BCS’ (iBCS) and ‘dependent BCS’ (dBCS), were used to assess 1111 Swiss Brown Cattle. The iBCS and the dBCS systems were both working with the same flowchart with a decision tree structure for visual and palpatory assessment using a scale from 2 to 5 with increment units of 0.25. The iBCS was created strictly complying with...
