Two different methods to reveal body condition scores (BCS), called independent BCS (iBCS) and dependent BCS (dBCS; similar to the method of Ferguson et al. 1994), were applied in 1111 Swiss Brown dairy cows. Ultrasound measurement of the back fat thickness (BFT) served as validation method. Aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of assessor’s subjective impression of the overall appearance of the cow on the scoring process. With 67.3% of the BFT variance, the dBCS with its consideration of the overall impression of the cow and its more open approach was more suitable to predict the subcutaneous fat appositions. The strictly formularized iBCS could only explain 47.3% of the BFT variance. The pin bone region was identified to cause the biggest... |

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) has a high ecological value due to the long and intensive flowering as well as its favorable impact on soil fertility. However, in Europe demand for buckwheat kernels as food is low. Therefore, the question arises whether cultivation of this plant could be promoted by using it as animal feed. In the current preliminary experiment, the extent to which buckwheat, offered in different forms, is consumed by dairy cows was tested in conjunction with potential effects on milk yield. Three groups of lactating cows were fed a silage-concentrate mixture, which either contained 3 kg DM/d buckwheat kernel flour (n=4), or 2.5 kg DM/d buckwheat total plant silage (n=3) or no buckwheat compound (control; n=4). After 4 days of... |

In a 7-week on-farm feeding trial rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) were provided with a diet containing 28% mechanically de-fatted insect meal prepared from larvae of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (HIM) and compared to a control that received a certified organic and fishmeal based diet. In the test diet insect meal replaced almost 50% of the fishmeal. The whole experiment was conducted under practical conditions on an organically certified rainbow trout farm in Switzerland. Fish of initially 66.5±2.3 g body weight were grown to 125±4.5 g and assessed for their growth performance, as well as analysed for their proximate composition, feed conversion ratio, fatty acid contents and organoleptic properties. Improved lipid utilisation and decreased... |

Increasing efficiency in livestock production and reducing the share of animal products in human consumption are two strategies to curb the adverse environmental impacts of the livestock sector. Here,we explore the roomfor sustainable livestock production by modelling the impacts and constraints of a third strategy in which livestock feed components that compete with direct human food crop production are reduced. Thus, in the outmost scenario, animals are fed only from grassland and by-products from food production. We show that this strategy could provide sufficient food (equal amounts of human-digestible energy and a similar protein/calorie ratio as in the reference scenario for 2050) and reduce environmental impacts comparedwith the reference scenario... |

The present study investigated the effect of gentle touching applied during the last 5 weeks before slaughter in finishing cattle on behaviour towards humans, stress indicators and beef quality. Three Experiments were carried out. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 employed eight Limousin crossbred bulls, eight Piemontese crossbreds (six females, two steers) and ten Limousin crossbreds (three females, seven steers), respectively. Half of the animals were equally assigned to a treatment and a control group. The treatment group consisted of a standardized gentle head-neck-region touching and started 5 weeks before slaughter and was continued once a week in experiments 1 and 2 and twice a week in experiment 3 during the following 5 weeks. Avoidance distance tests (ADT)... |

This study investigates meat quality of four autochthonous Swiss ovine breeds, White Alpine (WAS, n=15), Walliser blacknose sheep (SN, n=8), Engadine sheep (EN, n=9) and the Mirror sheep (SP, n=10). Especially for the latter two breeds, which are rare and endangered, information about meat quality and constitution is important for merchandising issues. All lambs (LW 20-25 kg) of each breed were fattened on pasture for 208 d and subsequently slaughtered. Evaluations were carried out for slaughter yield and classifications, pH-value, colorimetry (L*a*b*-System), shear force (Warner Bratzler method) and cooking losses in the Musculus longissimus dorsi. The results showed no meat quality defects in any breed. The main differences between breeds arose... |

This study investigated whether a positive handling had a stress reducing effect on beef cattle. Eight finishing bulls were randomly assigned to a handling group and a control group. The handling group received 10 times 4 minutes of positive handling, spread over 5 weeks before slaughter. After 5 weeks avoidance distance had decreased in the handling group, but not in the control group. No differences in behaviour were observed during trailer loading. Handled animals showed less stress-indicating behaviour when entering the stunning box. Blood samples were taken before handling sessions and one day before slaughter and during exsanguinations. Cortisol-, lactateand glucose concentrations were elevated in sting blood of all animals. Control animals... |

An experiment was conducted to test whether dietary sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia), a plant containing condensed tannins, affects feeding and rumination behaviour of dairy cows fed different roughage-only diets. Out of a herd of sixty lactating Swiss Fleckvieh cows, twenty-nine were chosen for a 6-week experiment. Cows were fed pasture, fresh cut grass and hay. During week 1 (baseline) and weeks 2-4, they had access to pasture for 4 hours during day, and received approximately 6 kg DM/day fresh grass and 4 kg DM/day hay in barn. In week 5 and 6, daily pasture allowance was 2 h; hay offer was doubled. In week 2-6, each cow individually received respectively 1 kg of pelleted feed in the morning and in the evening. Ten cows received ryegrass pellets in week... |

In the course of the close interplay between any scientific approach and its object, research has a modifying impact on the latter. The same is true for agriculture as scientific object. This is a particularly evident problem in organic farming, as the worldview of organic farming, arguments in marketing and farming practice seem to be in contrast to contemporary academic science which is, however, of great significance for organic research. Thus, organic research often appears to be carried out on the same theoretical basis which is opposed by organic practice and its ethical and philosophical backgrounds. At various levels, the apparent antagonism between holism and reductionism is part of this problem. This paper discusses whether holistic science is... |
