Aproximacion a las perdidas economicas ocasionadas a corto plazo por los incendios forestales en Galicia en 2006 AgEcon

Resumen Este estudio cuantifica parte de las pérdidas económicas a corto plazo o inmediatas (excluyendo las de uso pasivo) ocasionadas por los incendios forestales de Galicia ocurridos en el 2006. El modelo de análisis se basa en la estimación económica de los servicios ecosistémicos perdidos debido a los incendios ocurridos. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que los daños a corto plazo (desde agosto-diciembre 2006) reflejados en las partidas cuantificadas se aproximan a los 300 millones de euroes (dependiendo del escenario de análisis). Estimating Consumer Willingness to Pay for Country-of-Origin Labeling AgEcon

Consumer willingness to pay for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling program is assessed. A consumer survey was conducted during 2002 in several grocery stores in Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins, Colorado. Econometric results indicate that surveyed consumers are willing to pay an average of $184 per household annually for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling program. Respondents were also willing to pay an average of $1.53 and $0.70 per pound more for steak and hamburger labeled as "U.S. Certified Steak" and "U.S. Certified Hamburger," which is equivalent to an increase of 38% and 58%, respectively, over the initial given price.

Assessing Consumer Preferences for Country-of-Origin Labeling AgEcon

In this paper, we assess consumer willingness to pay for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) program applied to beef ribeye steaks, chicken breasts, and pork chops, all labeled as “Certified U.S.” products. A consumer survey was mailed in spring and early summer 2003 to households in the continental United States. Results indicate that consumers are in general very concerned about food safety issues, viewing U.S. meats as the safest among the selection of countries considered. Nevertheless, consumer willingness to pay for Certified U.S. products is relatively small, although above the expected implementation costs associated with a mandatory labeling program. Dealing with Preference Uncertainty: A Mixture Model Approach AgEcon

In the current paper, we compare alternative approaches to incorporating uncertainty into the statistical analysis of dichotomous choice responses. In doing so, first we employ previous modelling techniques that included uncertainty of preferences, and secondly we compare the obtained results with those coming from a novel approach here developed, a finite mixture model. The finite mixture model is a very flexible framework used to deal with preference uncertainty. Our case study uses data gathered in the Prestige oil spill valuation study from Spain.

CONSUMER ATTITUDES TOWARDS GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS IN NORWAY AgEcon

There is a lack of public acceptance of genetically modified (GM) food products in Europe. Using a dichotomous choice contingent valuation methodology, we find that willingness to accept (WTA) for GM food in Norway is positively affected (i.e. a greater discount is required) by higher levels of self-reported risk perceptions toward GM-food and preferences for domestically produced food. The estimation results show that self-reported knowledge about biotechnology increases WTA while higher levels of formal education decrease the WTA for GM-foods. Tomato trade between the U.S. and Mexico has grown significantly during the past decade. This increased trade, together with major structural changes in US produce marketing channels, has increased the complexity of conducting analysis of market integration and equilibrium. This study implements an Extended Parity Bounds Model (EPBM), following the work of Barrett and Li, to examine fresh tomato trade relationships between major shipping points and terminal markets for Mexican imported and Florida and California tomatoes. DISCOVERING NICHE MARKETS: A COMPARISON OF CONSUMER WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR LOCAL (COLORADO GROWN), ORGANIC, AND GMO-FREE PRODUCTS AgEcon

Demand for value-added products is highly segmented among different types of consumers. In this article, we assess consumer preferences for local, organic, and GMO-free potatoes in order to discover their potential niche markets. We identify sociodemographic characteristics that affect consumer preferences and compare the effects of different attributes on consumers' willingness to pay. Results suggest that the attribute "Colorado grown" carries a higher willingness to pay than organic and GMO-free attributes.

ASSESSING CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR ORGANIC, ECO-LABELED, AND REGULAR APPLES AgEcon

We assess consumer choice of eco-labeled, organic, and regular apples, and identify sociodemographic characteristics affecting the choice among those three alternatives. Eco-labeled apples are less desirable than organic when food safety, the environment, and children's needs are considered. Characteristics that may be expected to positively affect the decision to buy eco-labeled apples relative to regular apples actually have the opposite effect with the inclusion of the organic alternative. When considering all three choices, the eco-labeled product is found to be an intermediate choice among consumers.

Most of the existing literature deals with consumer willingness to pay for GM-free food, or consumer willingness to accept for GM food. However, it is well know that consumers have mixed views about GM foods. In this research, we do not presume that all consumers may just have positive or negative preferences about GM products. Rather, heterogeneous preferences are considered. This paper presents a contingent valuation questioning sequence and associated modeling approaches that allow identification of both positive and negative preferences. Willingness to pay (WTP) for the GM product is contrasted with willingness to accept (WTA) compensation to buy it.

This paper investigates the impact of interviewer effects on willingness to pay (WTP) estimates. Face-to-face surveys were conducted with two interviewers. Both interviewers used a transcript and conducted the survey at the same location and at same time. We found that responses to the WTP questions differ across eco-labeled products and by interviewer. This interviewer effect is particularly relevant when we analyze the impact on WTP estimates for eco-labeled products grown in countries associated with the origin of one of the interviewers.

Valuing Animal Welfare Labels with Experimental Auctions: What do we learn from Consumers? AgEcon

In this paper two types of experimental auctions (endowment and full bidding) are used to elicit consumer preferences towards different labels providing information on animal welfare practices. The three types of labeling schemes evaluated are the comprehensive “animal welfare label”, the “good animal housing”, and the “good human-animal relation and transport conditions”. Our results suggest that there are no statistically significant differences in the elicited values across labelling schemes. However, there are clear differences across auction types. Using Random Parameters to Account for Heterogeneous Preferences in Contingent Valuation of Public Open Space AgEcon

To test for preference heterogeneity in dichotomous choice contingent valuation responses, a random parameter logit (RPL) specification is used in this analysis. The RPL model confirms heterogeneity in respondents' preferences for protection of public open space, as reflected in statistically significant standard deviations of the normally distributed random parameters. Results show that while the majority of respondents indicate a positive willingness to pay (WTP), a minority of those surveyed report a negative WTP. Some of this variation in tastes remains even after individual characteristics and attitudinal variables are included in the model.

This paper analyzes a monopolist's behavior when consumers cannot observe the production standards. These types of products are usually known as credence goods. The steady-state level of quality with credence goods is found to be lower than that with experience goods, and perfect information goods. The finding that only perceived quality, which is effectively a filtered version of true quality, affects reputation indicates rewards for high quality production are lower in the credence good case. Further, an increase in the level of monitoring can increase the true level of product quality in the market for credence goods.

Obesity is a growing concern. New World Health Organization (WHO) figures indicate that obesity is spreading around the world as a "global epidemic." According to the WHO, there are more people suffering overweight related problems than malnutrition. Globally there are more than 1 billion adults who are overweight and at least 300 million of them are clinically obese, while 800 million suffer malnutrition (WHO 2004). REPUTATION AND STATE COMMODITY PROMOTION: THE CASE OF WASHINGTON APPLES AgEcon

A dynamic multiple-indicator multiple-cause (MIMIC) framework was used to estimate the latent variable reputation with price premiums for Washington apples and attributes that covered the period July 1996 to November 1999. A maximum likelihood two-stage approach was employed. For comparison purposes, a hedonic regression was also estimated. Results from the first stage of the estimation procedure in the MIMIC reputation model suggest that price premiums are good indicators of reputation. Country-of-origin labeling is now being considered as an alternative by the U.S. Senate. Research is still needed to determine what attributes consumers value in domestic versus imported beef, and to quantify the value that consumers place on country-of-origin labels. Preliminary results suggest that U.S. consumers perceived domestic beef as being safer than imported beef, and overall they are willing to pay a premium to obtain U.S. certified beef.
