Evidence of a relationship between weight and total length of marine fish in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean: physiological, spatial and temporal variations ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Delpech, Jean-paul; Lazard, Coline; Salaun, Michele; Verin, Yves; Coppin, Franck; Travers-trolet, Morgane.
Weight–Body Length relationships (WLR) of 45 fish species (37 Actinopterygii and eight Elasmobranchii) were investigated. A total of 31,167 individuals were caught and their biological parameters measured during the four quarters from 2013 to 2015, on five scientific surveys sampling the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (ICES Divisions IVb, IVc, VIId, VIIe, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj, VIIIa and VIIIb). Among 45 tested species, all showed a significant correlation between total length (L) and total weight (W). The influence of sex on WLR was estimated for 39 species and presented a significant sexual dimorphism for 18 species. Condition factor (K) of females was always higher than for males. Moreover, a spatial effect on the WLR...

Estimation of Age, Growth and Fishing Season of a Palaeolithic Population of Grayling (Thymallus thymallus) Using Scale Analysis ArchiMer
Guillaud, Emilie; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig; Bearez, Philippe.
The fish remains sampled from archaeological sites are generally the result of human food refuse; therefore, the study of retrieved fish scales may provide reliable information on the season of capture and on paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental changes. Among Western European freshwater fishes, the grayling, Thymallus thymallus¸ has the most easily recognizable scales and is a commonly recovered species from Paleolithic contexts. This study, therefore, is based on the growth pattern analysis of modern and archaeological scales from grayling specimens. The modern specimens were collected monthly in France (n = 22), Switzerland (n = 16), Finland (n = 20) and Sweden (n = 10). Scale growth patterns were measured using numerical analysis to a high accuracy. The...

A review of image-based tools for automatic fish ageing from otolith features ArchiMer
Carbini, Sebastien; Chessel, Anatole; Benzinou, Abdesslam; Fablet, Ronan; Mahe, Kelig; De Pontual, Helene.
Most of European fish stocks are assessed using age-based models, and otolith interpretation for age estimations costs several million euros annually. In this context, automated ageing systems would provide a mean to 1) standardize ageing, 2) control ageing consistency within and between ageing laboratories 3) build interpreted image data bases ensuring the information conservation and sharing and 4) improve growth studies while reducing the cost of the acquisition of age data. This paper presents a review of different image-based tools for automatic fish ageing from otolith features within the framework of AFISA (EU STREP project on Automated FISh Ageing coordinated by Ifremer). The full automatic ageing process can be divided into three main steps: 1)...

Elleboode, Romain; Oudard, Clemence; Mahe, Kelig.

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Prigent, M; Bertrand, Jacques; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Fontenelle, G; Foucher, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Rostiaux, Emilie; Trenkel, Verena.
The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes....

Otolith shape as a valuable tool to evaluate the stock structure of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Evano, Hugues; Mille, Tiphaine; Bourjea, Jerome.
Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is an oceanic-pelagic species currently fully exploited by several fisheries in the Indian Ocean, with suspicion of overexploitation in the southwest, but without a clear understanding of the real stock structure within this Ocean. Population structure of the Indian stock was studied in the western Indian Ocean using 395 individual samples collected from 2009 to 2014. Sagittal otoliths of the fish have been removed and shape analysis performed on these calcified pieces. Otolith morphometrics data and normalized Elliptical Fourier Descriptors (EFDs) were then extracted automatically by the dedicated imageanalysis system TNPC. Preliminary, side effect was tested by Redundancy analysis (RDA) combined to permutation tests on 91...

Mahe, Kelig; Penil, Caroline; Sevin, Karine.

Effects of temperature on growth and metabolism in a Mediterranean population of European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Mahe, Kelig; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Delliou, Herve.
Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)...

Ramdane, Zouhir; Trilles, Jean-paul; Mahe, Kelig; Amara, Rachid.
A total of 664 Boops Boops (Linnaeus, 1758) and 823 Mullus barbatus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758 from the east coast of Algeria were examined to study their parasitofauna. We collected eleven parasitic species (two monogeneans, three copepods, five isopods and one Branchiura) from B. boops, and four parasitic species (two copepods and two isopods) from M. barbatus barbatus. Five species were reported for the first time in Algeria. The site of attachment on the host and the degree of specificity varied according to the parasite species while the infestation rate changed according to the month and the host size. The parasitism did not show a significant negative impact on the biological parameters of the fish host.

Variability of PCB burden in 5 fish and sharks species of the French Mediterranean continental slope ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Fabri, Marie-claire; Miralles, Francoise Marco; Dufour, Jean-louis; Elleboode, Romain; Sevin, Karine; Mahe, Kelig; Bouchoucha, Marc.
Despite being generally located far from contamination sources, deep marine ecosystems are impacted by chemicals like PCB. The PCB contamination in five fish and shark species collected in the continental slope of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) was measured, with a special focus on intra- and interspecific variability and on the driving factors. Significant differences occurred between species. Higher values were measured in Scyliorhinus canicula, Galeus melastomus and Helicolenus dactylopterus and lower values in Phycis blennoides and Lepidorhombus boscii. These differences might be explained by specific abilities to accumulate and eliminate contaminant, mostly through cytochrome P450 pathway. Interindividual variation was also high and no...

Cochard, Marie-laure; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig.

Otolith growth and age estimation of bastard grunt, Pomadasys incisus (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Haemulidae), in the Gulf of Tunis (Central Mediterranean). ArchiMer
Chater, Ines; Romdhani, Ahlem; Dufour, Jean-louis; Mahe, Kelig; Francour, Patrice; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia.
Background. Bastard grunt, Pomadasys incisus (Bowdich, 1825), is reported as a well-established species in the Mediterranean Sea. Although bastard grunt has rapidly expanded its area of distribution in the Mediterranean, there is no information about its age and growth. The aim of this study was to provide data about growth, condition, and first sexual maturity of the species in order to contribute to a better management of its fishery. Materials and methods. A total of 515 specimens of bastard grunt were caught in the Gulf of Tunis. The age was determined from otoliths. Length–weight relation, von Bertalanffy equation, and growth rate were employed to evaluate the fish growth. Also the condition factor and length at first sexual maturity were calculated....
