La stratégie d’échantillonnage optimisée du Réseau Hydrologique Littoral Normand (RHLN) a été approuvée en 2007 par ses partenaires, avec le triple objectif (1) d’observer les niveaux d’eutrophisation et les phénomènes associés pour comprendre leur déclenchement et évolution ; (2) d’évaluer la qualité des eaux selon les indicateurs réglementaires (DCE, OSPAR), et expertiser ces évaluations selon les connaissances actuelles du milieu ; et (3) d’améliorer et publier les connaissances via des projets de recherche, et permettre la validation des modèles. The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a commercially important species, with production based on both fisheries and aquaculture. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models have been extensively applied to study its energetics but such applications require a deep understanding of its nutrition, from filtration to assimilation. Being filter feeders, mussels show multiple responses to temporal fluctuations in their food and environment, raising questions that can be investigated by modeling. To provide a better insight into mussel–environment interactions, an experiment was conducted in one of the main French growing zones (Utah Beach, Normandy). Phytoplankton primary production varies considerably with environmental parameters especially in dynamic ecosystems like estuaries. The aim of this study was to investigate short-term primary production along the salinity gradient of a temperate estuary over the course of 1 year. The combination of carbon incorporation and fluorescence methods enabled primary production estimation at short spatial and temporal scales. The electron requirement for carbon fixation was investigated in relation with physical-chemical parameters to accurately estimate primary production at high frequency. In the scope of the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) implementation, the aim of this work was to compare the response of different emerging tools to evaluate the chemical status of water bodies in Normandy coastal waters (France). These tools included passive samplers foreseen in future evaluation campaigns in France as a replacement for bulk seawater sampling (i.e. Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT), and Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS)). Climate change contributes to local weather modifications such as storm events and heavy rainfall, and in particular, changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme storm and rainfall events. Observations have indicated that rainfall-runoff processes, like sewage overflow may induce fecal contamination in coastal water. Pathogens present in runoff water could therefore contaminate shellfish and be responsible for food-borne disease outbreaks. Mathematical models for this were used to predict the effect of climate modifications on shellfish quality.
