One Perkinsus species may hide another: characterization of Perkinsus species present in clam production areas of France ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Chollet, Bruno; Michel, Justine; Robert, Maeva; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Miossec, Laurence.
Although clam populations in France are known to be infected with protozoans of the genus Perkinsus, no molecular characterization was previously performed on these parasites. Considering that several members of this genus have been associated with mortalities of molluscs worldwide, a study was undertaken in order to characterize these parasites in France. For that purpose, clams, Ruditapes philippinarum and R. decussatus, collected from different production areas and found to be infected with Perkinsus sp. in thioglycolate culture medium, were selected for PCR-RFLP tests and sequencing. Perkinsus olseni was detected in all the investigated areas and results also suggested the presence of P. chesapeaki in Leucate, a lagoon on the Mediterranean coast and in...

Created in 1986, the REPAMO network (Network of mollusc pathology), is a national zoosanitary surveillance network of shellfish health status along the French coasts. Its activities are in keeping with two European Directives, 91 /67/EEC and 95/70/EC and are a patt of the institutional tasks ofIfremer. The aims of the network are to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens and to survey the evolution of notifiable pathogens already present in France. The network focused on the survey of listed diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis of flat oyster) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X). In 2004, no sample couId be analysed to these two areas because of the difficulty to obtain flat oysters (sparse oyster beds,...

Validity of Escherichia coli, enterovirus, and F-specific RNA bacteriophages as indicators of viral shellfish contamination ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pelletier, Dominique; Haugarreau, Larissa; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique.
The sanitary classification of harvesting areas for bivalve mollusks in France is based on the level of Escherichia Coli contamination detected in shellfish meat, as defined in EC Directive 91/492 EEC. However, outbreaks of gastroenteritis or hepatitis after consumption of shellfish meeting current bacteriological standards suggest that E. coli is a poor indicator of viral contamination. The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of enterovirus and F-specific RNA bacteriophages as new indicators of human enteric viruses. Shellfish were sampled over a 37-mo period to characterize microbial contamination in two coastal areas subjected to different sewage contamination inputs. Contamination by E. coli, F-specific RNA bacteriophages (F+ RNA) and...

The Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas : a species introduced in Europe for aquaculture in the 70's to become invasive in the late 90's ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: from an introduced species for aquaculture to an invasive species for the ecosystem Miossec L. and Goulletquer Ph. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas has been introduced worldwide for aquaculture purposes since the beginning of the last century. In most of the countries the species established broadly, emphasizing its ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. In Europe the Pacific oyster was massively introduced in the 1970s especially into France after mass mortalities of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata affected by a viral disease. Good environmental conditions in some French areas on the Atlantic coast induced successful recruitments in the following years. The population became...

Miossec, Laurence; Allain, Gwenhael; Arzul, Isabelle; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine; Cameron, Angus.
Denis, Jacques; Miossec, Laurence; Zeitoun, Corinne; Console, Jean-jacques; Angeli, Jean-pierre.

Bonamia ostreae and Ostrea edulis : a stable host-parasite system in France? ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Blanchet, Estelle; Garcia, Celine; Francois, Cyrille; Joly, Jean-pierre.
Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. After its first description in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany, the parasite rapidly spread to all French oyster farming areas and in other European countries through transfers of live molluscs. Bonamiosis and marteiliosis, another protozoan disease appeared in the seventies, drastically reduced the French flat oyster production from 20 000 tonnes in 1970 to less than 2000 tonnes after 1981. In 2001, about 1650 t of flat oysters were marketed in France. The production is restricted to several areas specialised in reproduction, growth and/or marketing, and depends on transfers of animals. Most important production...

Bivalve aquaculture transfers in Atlantic Europe. Part B: Environmental impacts of transfer activities ArchiMer

For centuries human populations have moved live shellfish around the world for consumption or aquaculture purposes; being relayed from their area of origin for growout or sale. This is in contrast to the inadvertent anthropogenic spreading of species via e.g. ballast waters. There are inherent risks associated with transfer of shellfish including introducing of alien species, diseases, pests, bacteria and viruses associated with the translocated species in addition to the potential impact on genetic integrity and biodiversity of local stocks. Many examples of severe ecological impacts have been documented worldwide owing to the intentional or unintentional translocation of animals. It is therefore important to develop risk reduction methods which have not...

REPAMO: a surveillance tool for mollusc health ArchiMer
Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine; Arzul, Isabelle; Joly, Jean-pierre; Miossec, Laurence; Chollet, Bruno; Ferrand, Sylvie; Robert, Maeva.
At the present time losses due to diseases are one of main factors limiting the aquaculture development. Unceasing increase of exchanges between different countries favours the risk of introduction and propagation of new pathogen agents. At the beginning of the 90’s the European Union laid the surveillance of mollusc health inside each Member State in order to protect the safety of exchanges. Indeed few measures are available to protect molluscs from diseases. Only the prophylactic approach is possible; this approach is based on a zoosanitary surveillance of mollusc populations and/or a development of resistant populations against some diseases. Created in 1986, the French network for surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) ensures the...

Non-native aquatic animals introductions have driven disease emergence in Europe ArchiMer
Peeler, Edmund J.; Oidtmann, Birgit C.; Midtlyng, Paul J.; Miossec, Laurence; Gozlan, Rodolphe E..
In this paper it is argued, using examples of disease emergence in aquatic animals in Europe, that the introduction of non-native species drives disease emergence by both extending the geographic range of parasites and pathogens and facilitating host-switching. Enteric red mouth disease and infectious haematopoietic necrosis of salmonids have extended their geographic range from North America to Europe with the import of live fish (Pimephales promelas) and rainbow trout eggs, respectively. Host-switching results in disease emergence when previously unidentified commensal organisms or known pathogen switch to new naïve hosts. The most serious endemic diseases of wild aquatic animals in Europe in recent years can be traced to the introduction of non-native...

From November 1978 to January 1982, the author has studied the effects of Amoco Cadiz oil spill on plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) reproduction, main species of flat fish of the aber Wrac'h and aber Benoit. Serious alterations of the function were observed in females. Examining the gonado-somatic ratio has revealed some anomalies in the reproductive process. Study of ovary histology has shown large cytologic modifications. Some hypothesis have been retained: oil action in situ, use of lipidic reserves for another aim than reproduction, and hormonal perturbations.

Development of a generic decision-support tool for identifying potentially invasive aquatic taxa: AS-ISK ArchiMer
Copp, Gordon H.; Vilizzi, Lorenzo; Tidbury, Hannah; Stebbing, Paul D.; Trakan, Ali Serham; Miossec, Laurence; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Electronic decision-support tools are now an essential component of government strate gies to battle non-native species, with taxon-specific, paper-based risk analysis schemes often being replaced by taxon-generic tools. This study reports on the development of a decision-support tool for aquatic species, the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), which replaces five taxon-specific toolkits for amphibians, freshwater and marine fish and invertebrates (FISK, MFISK, FI-ISK, MI-ISK, Amph-ISK). Adapted from Pheloung et al.’s. Weed Risk Assessment (WRA), the “-ISK” toolkits were also “self-automated workbooks” in Excel® VisualBasic® architecture of the ’WRA. In creating AS-ISK, we incorporated the conceptual approach (questions and guidance) of...
