Ecological network analysis was applied in the Seine estuary ecosystem, northern France, integrating ecological data from the years 1996 to 2002. The Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach was used to model the trophic flows in 6 spatial compartments leading to 6 distinct EwE models: the navigation channel and the two channel flanks in the estuary proper, and 3 marine habitats in the eastern Seine Bay. Each model included 12 consumer groups, 2 primary producers, and one detritus group. Ecological network analysis was performed, including a set of indices, keystoneness, and trophic spectrum analysis to describe the contribution of the 6 habitats to the Seine estuary ecosystem functioning. Results showed that the two habitats with a functioning most related to a... |

We analysed a few aspects of oyster culture in New Caledonia. Oyster culture there is not very important, one farm producing 30 tonnes of Japanese oysters per year and the other one, 3 tonnes of rock oysters. Mangrove oyster deposits are traditionally exploited, and this exploitation lead to a decrease of the densities and biomasses observed in the most exploited estuaries. On the four monitored sites, the maximum size observed is comprised between 7.2 to 10 cm, for a mode comprised between 3.6 and 4.8 cm. Densities go from 31 to 251 oysters and biomasses, from 0.751 to 2.553 kg/m2. Regulations focus on the minimum collection size (6 cm) and a fishing prohibition period of 8 months. Based on our observations, we suggest that these dispositions be... |

The eastern English Channel, the narrow channel of water separating northern France and southeast England is an area of intense human use of the array of resources concentrated into its relative small area. The vulnerability of living resources and their habitats brought together French and British maritime experts within a common project (called CHARM): to create an atlas of marine resource habitats in the eastern English Channel so as to provide planners and decision-makers with the necessary information to help managing the use of its living and non-living resources. This multidisciplinary and richly illustrated atlas provides abundant information on the legal framework and physical environment; benthic invertebrates, fish and their habitats; fishing... |

An epidemiological survey was conducted in the Seine estuary and in two smaller and relatively preserved estuaries on the French Atlantic coast in order to estimate the occurrence of liver lesions in European flounder, Platichthys flesus, and also to seek putative risk factors for the recorded pathologies. Four hundred and seventy-eight fish of both sexes and of different size ranges were sampled in the three studied areas, 338 of which in the Seine estuary. All fish were examined for histopathological liver lesions, while DNA adducts and otoliths were analyzed on a subsample. Five categories of hepatic lesions were recorded with the following prevalence for the Seine estuary: 36.7 % inflammations, 8 % parasites (mainly encysted nematodes), 6.5 % foci of... |

The eastern English Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea through the Dover Strait, is an area where numerous and often conflicting human activities take place. A cross-border multidisciplinary project called CHARM was initiated to provide knowledge and tools for planners and decision-makers to durably manage the shared marine living resources. One such tool was an atlas of fish spatial distributions and modelled habitats, which was used here to investigate ontogenic and seasonal shifts in fish spatial distribution and habitat through a case-study, the dab Limanda limanda. Survey data for several life-history stages (eggs, larvae, coastal nurseries, < and > 1 year old) and seasons were used to map spatial patterns (using... |

The study carried out from 1995 to 1997 within the framework of "Le Havre" harbour extension project, concerned the description of halieutic populations and the characterization of a coastal nursery in the oriental part of the Seine bay and in the Seine estuary. The main objective was to describe the specific and demographic composition of marine populations as well as their spatio-temporal distribution, and then to assess the biologic and halieutic role of this area. The study also included a research about the dietary needs of fish juveniles living in the estuary. Methodology Five series of surveys were carried out in subtidal and intertidal zones. They were realised in autumn and winter, from September 1995 to March 1997, in an area extending from the... |

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest.... |

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were investigated in juvenile common sole from nursery zones situated along the French coast in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Extensive identification was performed with regard to PBDEs, novel BFRs 1.2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), and other non-PBDE BFRs, namely, hexabromobenzene (HBB) and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153). Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations (E 14 congeners) ranged from 0.01 ng/g to 0.16 ng/g wet weight (ww) in muscle, and 0.07 ng/g to 2.8 ng/g ww in liver. Concentrations were in the lower range of those reported in the literature in other European locations. Lower PBDE concentrations, condition indices and lipid contents were observed in... |

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. [...] After a series of "Understanding keys" aimed at helping the reader understand the methodology and... |

Estuaries and coastal waters are essential nursery habitats for many marine species, and especially for flatfishes. Thus, investigating how anthropogenic disturbances affect the quality of these habitats is of major importance to understand their consequences on the population renewal of marine species. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effects of estuarine habitat degradation on the population of the common sole in the Eastern Channel, a key species in the fish community and fisheries in this area. We especially focused on the drastic drop in the surface area and on the low water quality of the Seine estuary, the main river of the Eastern Channel. A geographic Information System (GIS) was used to develop quantitative maps of sole nursery... |

Numerous marine fish species spend some time, within their biological cycle, in the restricted and unstable habitats that are coastal and estuarine feeding grounds. These ecosystems are essential for the growth and survival of young fishes. Some recent studies, conducted in the framework of the "Seine Aval 1 and 2" programs and of other projects, demonstrated that the Seine estuary was home to large numbers of juveniles (Morin et al., 1997) but that this estuary was subjected to a strong anthropic pressure interfering with the feeding ground function it should normally play. There is, indeed, a paradox between the nutritive availabilities provided by the estuary and the ichtyic communities exploiting this resource (Mouny, 1998); and this observation is... |

At present, the majority of fisheries are monitored and regulated in areas which are delineated by arbitrary ICES boundaries which do not necessarily have logical or consistent relationships with biological processes or fish movements. The biogeographical identification of Channel stocks is, therefore, an important step towards developing a rational strategy for the management of their fisheries. This synthesis is based on the wide available knowledge which has not been yet entirely exploited with the purpose of stock identification, for 25 commercially important species in the Channel. In addition, principal technics for stock identification are reviewed likewise environmental characteristics of the Channel, which represent fundamental components in... |
