Platycheirus aurolateralis, a second sibling of P. scutatus, new for the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Recently, two new species were described in the Platycheirus scutatus (Meigen, 1822) complex: P. aurolateralis Stubbs, 2002 and P. speighti Doczkal, Stuke & Goeldlin de Tiefenau, 2002. Re-examination of the material of P. splendidus revealed that P. aurolateralis also occurs in the Netherlands. The Dutch records of both P. aurolateralis and P. splendidus are summarised in a table and a distribution map. A key is provided for the males of all four species of the Platycheirus scutatus complex. The differences between the males are also summarised in a table. The two specimens of P. splendidus recorded from France and Belgium (Smit 2001) are... |

Everlasting flowers as a vector for exotic insects (Diptera: Tephritidae)? In this paper two rearing occasions of exotic fruit fly species of the genus Terellia are documented. Terellia fuscicornis (Loew, 1844) was reared from a ‘tropical’ plant (probably a thistle species) of unknown origin. Terellia longicauda (Meigen, 1830) was reared from Cirsium rivulare from southern France. On both occasions the plants were left to dry to serve as everlasting flowers. The differences between these exotic and a similar native Terellia-species are given. It is unsure if these introduced species can become established in the Netherlands. |

Halictophagus silwoodensis new for the Netherlands (Strepsiptera: Halictophagidae) The first record of Halictophagus silwoodensis Waloff, 1981 for the Netherlands is presented. Seven of the 64 specimens of Ulopa reticulata (Fabricius, 1794), the host of H. silwoodensis taken at a small patch of Calluna at Elst (province of Utrecht) had empty male puparia between the tergites (fig. 5). At several other locations specimens of U. reticulata were examined, but yielded no further specimens of H. silwoodensis. The biology of both the host and it’s parasite are briefly discussed. Furthermore it is discussed that probably several other species of Strepsitera are likely to occur in the Netherlands but have yet to be found. |
