Variation in egg and larval quality in various fish and crustacean species OMA
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
It is generally accepted, that a major constraint in the further development of marine fish and crustacean aquaculture, is the variable quality of eggs and larvae used for the hatchery-production of fry. Nonetheless, valid criteria to evaluate optimal egg quality have not been identified yet. Instead, particular indicators, are used, e.g. the fertilization and hatching rate, overall culture success during the first rearing period, etc., but these are not totally objective because hatchery-specific conditions may interfere. The biochemical composition of the egg may be one of the possible determinants of egg quality, which can be evaluated on a more objectie basis. In this respect, studied have been initiated to analyze in freshly-released eggs, the levels...

Proposal for a short-term toxicity test with Artemia nauplii OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Persoone, G.; Claus, C.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms is an urgent necessity, very little has yet been achieved for the marine environment. As a first step in this direction, a simple, inexpensive and reliable short-term routine test with Artemia larvae is proposed. This test is the result of an extensive study in our laboratory, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of Artemia bioassays published by various authors. The major advantage of the brine shrimp as a test species is its continuous availability under the form of dry cysts which can be hatched very easily; this eliminates all biological, technological, and financial problems of stock recruitment and/or culturing. The acute test...

Occurrence of Artemia in nature and its morphological development from nauplius to adult OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
The first written record of the existence of the brine shrimp only dates back to 1755 (Schlosser in Kuenen and Baas-Becking, 1938). Nonetheless this "filtering animal" was already known since much longer times by different ethnic groups who attributed a better salt production in the brine pools to the presence of Artemia ; hence its popular names such as brineworm, Salztierchen, verme de sale, sóféreg, Bahar el dud, Fezzanwurm, etc. Despite the primitive optical equipment available at that time Schlosser's drawings were very detailed and rightly give the adult animal 11 pairs of thoracopods. Several other scientists, including Linnaeus (1758), later described adult Artemia with only 10 thoracopods. This controversy...

Contributions towards a specific DHA enrichment in the live food Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia sp. OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P.; Devresse, B..
This paper reports on enrichment techniques oriented towards a specific DHA accumulation in the live prey Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia sp. The product used in these experiments (DHA7) is an experimental emulsion with a DHA/EPA ratio 6.7:1. Rotifers enriched with this pure DHA7 emulsion contained up to 69 mg/g DW DHA and a DHA/EPA ratio of 1.6. The DHA/EPA ration could be increased to a much higher level by different enrichment techniques. Dilution of the DHA7 emulsion with coconut oil prior to enrichment also had a beneficial effect on the DHA/EPA ratio of the rotifers. Using a mixture DHA7/coconut oil 3:7 the DHA/EPA ratio could be raised to 4.9. In Artemia DHA levels were slightly influenced...

The biogeography of Artemia : an updated review OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
An updated list of more than 350 Artemia sites is provided. It includes geographical coordinates of the sites and available data on the mode of reproduction of the locally occurring brine shrimp. The geographical distribution of Artemia is related to different types of climate. The classification of climate according to Thornthwaite provides a good correlation with the geographical occurrence of Artemia , as a result of which the world distribution pattern of Artemia can be predicted. Moreover, areas with possible Artemia sites and areas suited for transplantation and/or inoculation with Artemia can be identified on the basis of water balance...

Selected bacterial strains protect Artemia spp. from the pathogenic effects of Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 OMA
Verschuere, L.; Heang, H.; Criel, G.R.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
In this study Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for Artemia spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that pre-emptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected Artemia juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains providing total protection, as no mortality occurred 2 days after the experimental infection with V....

The use of Artemia cysts in aquaculture: the concept of "hatching efficiency" and description of a new method for cyst processing OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Persoone, G.; Baeza-Mesa, M.; Bossuyt, E.; Bruggeman, E..
The quality of brands of Artemia cysts should be expressed on a weight basis, namely the number of live nauplii hatching out per unit of weight of product and not as a "hatching percentage" since the latter concept does not take into account the degree of impurity of the material. A standardized method for the determination of the hatching efficiency is proposed. A new methodology for cyst processing has been worked out at laboratory scale, based on a 2-step cleaning (brine and tap water) followed by dehydration (air or brine) or decapsulation and dehydration (brine).

Selection of bacteria enhancing the growth rate of axenically hatched rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) OMA
Rombaut, G.; Dhert, P.; Vandenberghe, J.; Verschuere, L.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
The effect of bacterial strains on the growth rate of rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis, was determined under monoxenic conditions. The first objective was to obtain sterile rotifer cultures starting from rotifer resting eggs using merthiolate or glutaraldehyde as disinfectant. Sterile rotifer cultures were obtained, without affecting the hatching ability of the resting eggs, when 0.05 µl/l glutaraldehyde was used. This disinfection procedure was used to examine the effect of 20 bacterial strains, isolated from well-performing live-feed production systems, on the population growth rate of rotifers cultured under monoxenic conditions. Five out of the 20 bacterial strains tested were able to improve significantly the asexual reproduction of rotifers. The...

International study on Artemia: 56. Characterization of two Artemia populations from Namibia and Madagascar: cytogenetics, biometry, hatching characteristics and fatty acid profiles OMA
Triantaphyllidis, G.V.; Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Miasa, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
Two parthenogenetic Artemia populations from southern Africa, one from Swakopmund (Namibia) and another from Ankiembe saltworks (Madagascar) have been studied. The population of Namibia is mainly diploid (2n=42) with few tetraploid individuals (4n=84), while the one from Madagascar was found to be triploid (3n=63). No chromocenters have been observed in either of the two populations. The Namibian population has smaller cysts and nauplii compared to those of the Madagascar population. Discriminant analysis revealed significant differences in the biometry of the adults from the two populations. The two populations exhibited very good hatching characteristics. The study of fatty acid methyl esters revealed that the Namibian population...

Feeding of the brine shrimp Artemia on yeast: effect of mechanical disturbance, animal density, water quality and light intensity OMA
Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Details are given of experiments conducted to determine the effects of tank culture conditions on the feeding of Artemia. Mechanical disturbance, animal density and water quality were found to affect the feeding rate of Artemia. The importance of culture conditions in maintaining a rate of food consumption which does not limit the growth of the brine shrimp is stressed.

Microbial control of the culture of Artemia juveniles through preemptive colonization by selected bacterial strains OMA
Verschuere, L.; Rombaut, G.; Huys, G.; Dhont, J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
The use of juvenile Artemia as feed in aquaculture and in the pet shop industry has been getting more attention during the last decade. In this study, the use of selected bacterial strains to improve the nutritional value of dry food for Artemia juveniles and to obtain control of the associated microbial community was examined. Nine bacterial strains were selected based on their positive effects on survival and/or growth of Artemia juveniles under monoxenic culture conditions, while other strains caused no significant effect, significantly lower rates of survival and/or growth, or even total mortality of the Artemia . The nine selected strains were used to preemptively colonize the...

Uptake of Vibrio anguillarum vaccine by Artemia salina as a potential oral delivery system to fish fry OMA
Campbell, R.; Adams, A.; Tatner, M.F.; Chair, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
An ELISA to detect Vibrio anguillarum antigen in Artemia salina was developed. This assay was then used to determine the time course of antigen uptake by Artemia during incubations with Vibrio vaccine with a view to using Artemia as a vaccine carrier for oral vaccination of fish fry. The rate of uptake of vaccine by Artemia was shown to be concentration dependent. At a dose of 1.5x107 cfu ml-1, 1 mg wet weight of Artemia took up 1x105 cfu within 30min and reached maximum of 6x106 cfu after 60min. Thus each Artemia...

The use of decapsulated cysts of the brine shrimp Artemia as direct food for carp Cyprinus carpio L. larvae OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; De Vrieze, L.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Decapsulated Artemia cysts have been evaluated as a direct food source for larvae of the carp Cyprinus carpio L. All decapsulated cyst diets gave excellent survival of carp larvae during the first two weeks of culturing. Unlike traditionally brine-stored decapsulated cysts, dried Artemia embryos provided growth results comparable to those obtained with freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Furthermore, except for Artemia embryos that lost their hatchability after long-term storage in air, several other inactivation treatments, simulating improper harvesting and processing of cysts, did not produce a significant decrease in the nutritional quality of the decapsulated...

Vaccination of European sea bass fry through bioencapsulation of Artemia nauplii OMA
Chair, M.; Gapasin, R.S.J.; Dehasque, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fry vaccinated orally by bioencapsulation in Artemia nauplii or by bath method exhibited better performance than control fish in terms of growth, food conversion and resistance to stress. The comparable survival between vaccinated and non-vaccinated animals suggests that vaccination methods are stressful. The present study shows that oral vaccination can be used to enhance growth in fish fry.

International study on Artemia : 32. Combined effects of temperature and salinity on the survival of Artemia of various geographical origin OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Siddall, S.E.; Sorgeloos, P..
The brine shrimp inhabits geographically isolated biotopes with specific biotic and abiotic conditions. This has resulted in various geographical strains between which marked genetica, biological and chemical differentiation exists. The response of 13 different Artemia strains to the combined effect of temperature and salinity has been studied. Experimental temperatures tested ranged from 18 to 34°C and salinities from 5 to 120 promille. Except for Chaplin Lake (Canada) Artemia , all strains showed high survival over a wide range of salinities (35-110 promille). For all strains the common temperature optimum was between 20 and 25°C. Interaction between temperature and salinity was negligible or very limited....

International study on Artemia : 17. Energy consumption in cysts and early larval stages of various geographical strains of Artemia OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Variations in dry weight, caloric content and ash content during cyst hatching and early larval development have been studied for various geographical strains of Artemia . In general, decapsulated cysts contain 30 to 40% more energy than freshly hatched nauplii; for Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires Artemia this difference amounts to 57%. Ash contents increase as decapsulated cysts hatch into instar I and molt into instar II-III nauplii. Over a 24h larval developmental period individual dry weights and energy content of the nauplii decrease with 16-34% and 22-37% respectively.A small but significant correlation exists between the survival rate of starved nauplii and either the energy content of instar I and instar II-III...

International study on Artemia: 58. Morphologic differentiation and reproductive isolation of Artemia populations from South America OMA
Gajardo, G.; Colihueque, N.; Parraguez, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
Six Artemia populations from coastal and inland sites in Chile, ranging from 20 to 50 degrees latitude south, were compared morphologically. The study included reference samples of A. franciscana (San Fransisco Bay, California-USA) and A. persimilis (Buenos Aires, Argentina). These species are likely to be found in Chile. Samples from Peru (Piura) and Brazil (Macau, Rio Grande do Norte) are two known examples of deliberate introduction of A. franciscana. The hypothesis of A. franciscana being the dominant species in South America was tested by multivariate morphological analyses based on ten body measurements. In addition, laboratory cross-fertility tests were...

Effect of different light regimes on the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of Isochrysis aff. galbana (clone T-ISO) OMA
Tzovenis, I.; De Pauw, N.; Sorgeloos, P..
The culture of Isochrysis aff. galbana Green (T-ISO) in hatcheries is promoted for its high docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content which favours the successful rearing of aquatic larvae. In this paper we identified the need for well-defined culture conditions of microalgae if sufficient DHA content is the final goal. Using photoperiods of 24:0h, 12:12h and 16:8h L/D combined with photon flux densities (PFD's) of 110, 220 and 460 µE m-2 s-1, batch cultures of T-ISO were sampled for DHA content in the exponential as well as the post-exponential (light-limited) growth phase. The various light regimes resulted in differences of DHA content of T-ISO revealing influences and strong...

Effects of feeding (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia during a progressively increasing period on the larviculture of freshwater prawns OMA
Romdhane, M.S.; Devresse, B.; Léger, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P..
Larvae of the freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were reared to post-larvae in a closed recirculation system. Six treatments were designed where freshly-hatched Artemia nauplii were first given to the larvae for 3, 7, 11, 15, 17 and 25 days according to the treatment. After that (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia were given until the 28th day at which time the test was terminated and evaluated. The requirement for (omega-3) Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA) for the larval stages of M. rosenbergii was confirmed by this experiment. Moreover, the longer the period of feeding on (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia nauplii , the better the results in terms of...

The effect of supplemental ascorbic acid in enriched live food for Clarias gariepinus larvae at startfeeding OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Verreth, J.; Ollevier, F.P.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Storch, V.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of three dietary ascorbic acid (AA) concentrations, each applied via two feed types, on production characteristics and physiological condition of African catfish (Clarius gariepinus) larvae has been assessed in two 10-day culture trials. Three treatments received only Artemia nauplii enriched with an experimental emulsion containing 0, 10 or 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) and yielding 530, 1200 and 1600 µg AA g-1 DW Artemia , respectively; the other three treatments were fed the same Artemia diets which were partially substituted by an artificial diet containing no vitamin C (ratio 20:80).
