Restorative Effects of A Newly Synthesized Peptide, Obiopeptide-1, in Cyclophosphamide- or Carrageenan-pretreated Mice Infected with Opportunistic Bacteria 19

Large numbers of cyclophosphamide- or carrageenan-pretreated immunosuppressed adult ddY mice died within 10 days after inoculation with several species of opportunistic bacteria, including P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, E. coli, S. aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus. When immunosuppressed mice were administered bacteria in combination with two 100 μg/mouse intramuscular doses of a newly synthesized peptide, Obiopeptide-1 (OP-1), survival rates increased significantly. At 24 and 48 hours after intraperitoneal inoculation with P. aeruginosa, counts of viable organisms from the livers, spleens, lungs, hearts, and kidneys of mice that were administered cyclophosphamide in combination with OP-1 were significantly lower than counts from mice that were...

Diagnosis of Babesia caballi Infection in Horses by Polymerase Chain Reaction 19

A set of primers were designed according to the published sequence of the gene encoding a rhoptry protein of Babesia caballi, and used to amplify parasite DNA from the blood samples obtained from carrier horses by polymerase chain reaction(PCR)method.The PCR method was sensitive enough to detect parasite DNA from 2.5 μl blood sample with a parasitemia of 0.000001%. The PCR method was compared with fluorescent antibody test(IFAT) in order to evaluate the diagnosis effciency for B. caball infection in horses. Of 142 field samples from Mongolia, 28(20%) and 96(69%)samples were identified positively by PCR and IFAT, respectively.
