The main instrument of the French-Indian Altika/ SARAL mission scheduled for launch in 2010, is the Kaband Altika altimeter. The high attenuation due to atmospheric water (liquid or vapor) at this frequency band is the major drawback of the use of Ka-band. In part I of this paper, the impact of rain/clouds on Ka-band data and on the accuracy of the estimates of the geophysical parameters have been analyzed and quantified using an analytical model of waveform. Waveform distortion and errors on the geophysical parameters can be significant especially for small dense clouds and rain cells. Basal melting of floating ice shelves and iceberg calving constitute the two almost equal paths of freshwater flux between the Antarctic ice cap and the Southern Ocean. The largest icebergs (>100 km2) transport most of the ice volume but their basal melting is small compared to their breaking into smaller icebergs that constitute thus the major vector of freshwater. The archives of nine altimeters have been processed to create a database of small icebergs (<8 km2) within open water containing the positions, sizes, and volumes spanning the 1992–2014 period. The evolution of the thickness and area of two large southern ocean icebergs, having drifted in open water for more than a year, is estimated through the combined analysis of altimeter data and visible satellite images. Most of the iceberg modelling studies uses two main melting formulations that are compared with the observed thickness evolution of our two icebergs, to test their validity in case of large icebergs. The first formulation, based on a fluid dynamics approach, would tend to underestimate basal melt rates, so that using the second one (using a thermodynamic budget consideration) may be more relevant. The India-France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applications, for observing ice sheet or icebergs, as well as for geodetic investigations. The mission ended its nominal phase after three years in orbit and began a new phase (drifting orbit) in July 2016. The variability of small-size iceberg distributions is revealed from a novel analysis of satellite altimeter data. A strong annual cycle is modulated by pulse-like events confined to single ocean basins, with dense iceberg populations in the South Atlantic in 2004-2005, and in the South Pacific in 2008. Anomalies in sea surface temperatures of the order of 1 degrees C may be related to the iceberg distribution. Icebergs also appear very strongly associated with anomalies in the heights of ocean waves. The major drawback of Ka band, operating frequency of the AltiKa altimeter on board SARAL, is its sensitivity to atmospheric liquid water. We address the lack of temporal information on ship emissions, and report on rapid short-term variations of satellite-derived ship NOx emissions between 2005 and 2012 over European seas. Our inversion is based on OMI observed tropospheric NO2 columns and GEOS-Chem simulations. Average European ship NOx emissions increased by similar to 15% from 2005 to 2008. This increase was followed by a reduction of similar to 12% in 2009, a direct result of the global economic downturn in 2008-2009, and steady emissions from 2009 to 2012. In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. This paper presents a study of the temporal and spatial variability of the significant wave height (H(s)) based on stationarity and correlation (spectral) analyses. A sea state is defined as a stationary state of a piecewise stationary stochastic random wave process. Rupture detection, i.e., detection of abrupt changes in H(s), is used to identify the stationary components of the wave process. [1] About 5% of Ku-band altimeter ocean data are degraded by the occurrence of high radar return cross sections (sigma(0)), usually called sigma(0) blooms. During blooms, which occur during no or low wind conditions, the mean altimeter waveform can significantly depart from the expected shape. In about 60% of the cases the waveforms are distorted to such an extent that either the range tracker loses lock or the off-nadir angle estimate becomes unrealistic. The analysis of high data rate altimeter waveforms during bloom events reveals the presence of V-shaped patterns similar to the ones observed during rain events. Unprecedented views of surface wind fields in tropical cyclones thereafter TCs) are provided by the European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS) C band scatterometer. Scatterometer measurements at C band are able to penetrate convective storms clouds, observing the surface wind fields with good accuracy. However the resolution of the measurements (50x50 km(2)) limits the interpretation of the scatterometer signals in such mesoscale events. Observations of the downstream evolution of an oceanic zonal horizontal shear flow at a Reynolds number of about 10(11), formed as the westward North Equatorial Current passes the island of Hawai'i, reveal finite-amplitude anticyclonic vortices resulting from instability of the shear. The initial orbital period of the vortices is exactly one pendulum day (3.1 days at this latitude), centrifugal instability presumably inhibiting stronger vortices from forming. As they move downstream, they appear to pair and merge into successively larger vortices, in a geometric sequence of longer orbital periods; three subharmonic transitions are suggested with final orbital periods near 6, 12 and 24 days. |

Marine ecosystems are under increasing anthropogenic pressures from marine and terrestrial activities. Ship traffic, the major cause of change in the open ocean, and its temporal evolution are still largely unknown because of lack of data. Altimeter data provide a new powerful tool to detect and monitor the ship traffic through a method of analysis of echo waveform. The mean dynamic topography of the surface of the ocean is estimated using a finite difference inverse model of the ocean circulation constrained by a prior TOPEX/Poseidon-EGM96 estimate and an ocean density climatology. The EGM96 geoid uncertainties are represented by their full covariance matrix. The model finds a solution that yields a new 1°-resolution dynamic topography estimate with a 5 cm precision. The existence of this solution suggests that the uncertainties in EGM96, despite being much smaller than in previous geopotential models, are nonetheless realistic. The geodetic information constrains the inverse estimate of the ocean circulation, particularly at high latitudes. |

[1] The Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) integrated water vapor content (IWVC) estimates in a coastal region during nonstationary cold-air outbreak conditions are analyzed using IWVC retrievals obtained from shipborne microwave radiometry (DRAKKAR), water vapor differential absorption laser remote sensing (LEANDRE 2), radiosonde measurements, and numerical weather prediction (NWP) model ALADIN of Meteo-France. The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) onboard Envisat is designed to provide very accurate measurements of sea surface temperature (SST). Using colocated in situ drifting buoys, a dynamical matchup database (MDB) is used to assess the AATSR-derived SST products more precisely. SST biases are then computed. Currently, Medspiration AATSR SST biases are discrete values and can introduce artificial discontinuities in AATSR level-2 SST fields. [1] Extreme weather events such as tropical cyclones are difficult to observe with conventional means. Satellite-based observations provide essential measurements of key parameters governing tropical cyclones. They are critical for short-term forecasting.
