Does the positive body-size-trophic level relationship hold at the species level? ArchiMer
Kopp, Dorothee; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Ernande, Bruno.
The structure, dynamics and productivity of marine ecosystems depend mainly on their underlying food webs. In temperate marine ecosystems, specifically in the English Channel, strong seasonality, habitat diversity and variability in the sources of available organic matters are controlling factors affecting the trophodynamics of these networks. Exploitation through fisheries may also alter these food webs. During the last decade, the study of trophic ecology has greatly benefited from the use of stable isotope analysis (SIA) that integrates diet information over long time periods and complements gut content analysis. Applied in complex ecosystems, such as the English Channel, SIA may help to detect nutrient pathways and trophic links. Stable isotopic...

The mosaic of habitats of the Seine estuary: Insights from food-web modelling and network analysis ArchiMer
Tecchio, Samuele; Rius, Antonio; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Lobry, Jeremy; Lassalle, Geraldine; Morin, Jocelyne; Bacq, Nicolas; Cachera, Marie; Chaalali, Aurelie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Niquil, Nathalie.
Ecological network analysis was applied in the Seine estuary ecosystem, northern France, integrating ecological data from the years 1996 to 2002. The Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach was used to model the trophic flows in 6 spatial compartments leading to 6 distinct EwE models: the navigation channel and the two channel flanks in the estuary proper, and 3 marine habitats in the eastern Seine Bay. Each model included 12 consumer groups, 2 primary producers, and one detritus group. Ecological network analysis was performed, including a set of indices, keystoneness, and trophic spectrum analysis to describe the contribution of the 6 habitats to the Seine estuary ecosystem functioning. Results showed that the two habitats with a functioning most related to a...

Commercial fishing patterns influence odontocete whale-longline interactions in the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Tixier, Paul; Burch, Paul; Richard, Gaetan; Olsson, Karin; Welsford, Dirk; Lea, Mary-anne; Hindell, Mark A.; Guinet, Christophe; Janc, Anais; Gasco, Nicolas; Duhamel, Guy; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Suberg, Lavinia; Arangio, Rhys; Söffker, Marta; Arnould, John P.y..
The emergence of longline fishing around the world has been concomitant with an increase in depredation-interactions by odontocete whales (removal of fish caught on hooks), resulting in substantial socio-economic and ecological impacts. The extent, trends and underlying mechanisms driving these interactions remain poorly known. Using long-term (2003–2017) datasets from seven major Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) longline fisheries, this study assessed the levels and inter-annual trends of sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) and/or killer whale (Orcinus orca) interactions as proportions of fishing time (days) and fishing area (spatial cells). The role of fishing patterns in explaining between-fisheries variations of probabilities of...

The eastern English Channel, the narrow channel of water separating northern France and southeast England is an area of intense human use of the array of resources concentrated into its relative small area. The vulnerability of living resources and their habitats brought together French and British maritime experts within a common project (called CHARM): to create an atlas of marine resource habitats in the eastern English Channel so as to provide planners and decision-makers with the necessary information to help managing the use of its living and non-living resources. This multidisciplinary and richly illustrated atlas provides abundant information on the legal framework and physical environment; benthic invertebrates, fish and their habitats; fishing...

A mass-balance Ecopath model of Coastal Areas in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam ArchiMer
Van, Mai Viet; Phuong, Nguyen Thanh; Dinh, Tran Dac; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Moreau, Jacques.
A mass-balance Ecopath model of coastal areas in the Mekong Delta has been constructed for a quantitative description of the trophic structure of the ecosystem. The model is used to estimate the important biological parameters and relationships among the different ecologically important groups. The model is based on the data collected from bottom trawling. There are 14 functional groups based on 58 species from coastal areas in the Mekong Delta survey such as shrimps, squids, crabs, mackerel, small pelagics, demersal fishes, benthic feeders, predator fishes and trash fish. The biomass value was estimated from catch production and bottom trawling surveys. Results show that the estimated total biomass of exploited resources was 3.99 ton.km-2. The values of...

Biodiversité et relations trophiques dans quelques milieux estuariens et lagunaires de l’Afrique de l’Ouest : Adaptations aux pressions environnementales ArchiMer
Villanueva, Ching-maria.
This work is the result of a research on West African estuaries and lagoon ecosystems: estuaries of Sine-Saloum (Senegal) and the Gambia, (The Gambia), as well as the lagoons Ébrié (Ivory Coast) and Lake Nokoué (Benin). Estuaries and lagoons are highly productive and economically important ecosystems and are among those threatened as their biodiversity and productivity are constant exposed to various disturbances. These disturbances can weaken the stability and durability of these ecosystems. This led to the problematic raised in the thesis: To approach the African western ecosystems and the environmental pressures that they undergo that eventually affect the biodiversity and the trophic relations of their aquatic living resources. This work seeks to...

La forme du poisson: Permet-elle de déduire les guildes trophiques ArchiMer
Chambord, Sophie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Ernande, Bruno; Lefebvre, Sebastien.

Diet is correlated with otolith shape in marine fish ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine; Mahe, Kelig; Cachera, Marie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; De Pontual, Helene; Ernande, Bruno.
Previous studies have shown that food amount influence fish otolith structure, opacity and shape and that diet composition has an effect on otolith chemical composition. This study investigated the potential correlation between diet and otolith shape in 5 wild marine fish species by addressing 4 complementary questions. First, is there a global relationship between diet and otolith shape? Second, which prey categories are involved in this relationship? Third, what are the respective contributions of food quantity and relative composition to diet–otolith shape co-variation? Fourth, is diet energetic composition related to otolith shape? For each species, we investigated how otolith shape varies with diet. These questions were tackled by describing diet in...

The emergence of longline fishing for Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) on the Kerguelen Plateau over the past two decades is concomitant with the development of depredation-type interactions by sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Through a unique collaboration between the French and the Australian fisheries operating respectively around Kerguelen, and Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI), this study preliminarily investigated the spatio–temporal variations of the rate of occurrence of sperm whale depredation on the Kerguelen Plateau. Between 2011 and 2016, sperm whales depredated toothfish on 29.1% of all longline sets and over 49.4% of the fished area. The probability of vessels to experience depredation decreased with the latitude...

Food Habits, Daily Ration and Relative Food Consumption in Some Fish Populations in Ubolratana Reservoir, Thailand ArchiMer
Kakkaeo, Montharop; Chittapalapong, Tanaporn; Villanueva, Ching-maria.
The diet composition and feeding habits have been investigated for several economically important indigenous species based on diel surveys collected from the Ubolratana reservoir (Thailand). For some of these populations the daily food ration, feeding periods, ingestion and evacuation rates were determined using MAXIMS, an iterative computer software utilising 24-hour series of stomach content data obtained in natural populations. The results obtained provide useful information for studies of the trophic relationship in the reservoir and can be explained by some observed migrating patterns of these fish populations.

Regime Shift in an Exploited Fish Community Related to Natural Climate Oscillations ArchiMer
Auber, Arnaud; Travers-trolet, Morgane; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Ernande, Bruno.
Identifying the various drivers of marine ecosystem regime shifts and disentangling their respective influence are critical tasks for understanding biodiversity dynamics and properly managing exploited living resources such as marine fish communities. Unfortunately, the mechanisms and forcing factors underlying regime shifts in marine fish communities are still largely unknown although climate forcing and anthropogenic pressures such as fishing have been suggested as key determinants. Based on a 24-year-long time-series of scientific surveys monitoring 55 fish and cephalopods species, we report here a rapid and persistent structural change in the exploited fish community of the eastern English Channel from strong to moderate dominance of small-bodied...

Modeling trophic interactions in Lake Kivu: What roles do exotics play? ArchiMer
Villanueva, Ching-maria; Isumbisho, M; Kaningini, B; Moreau, J; Micha, J.
An Ecopath model of the southern part of Lake Kivu, a deep African equatorial lake was constructed to quantitatively describe the possible impact of fish introductions in this ecosystem. This study is considered as an initial step in summarizing ecological and biological information, under a coherent framework, on this ecosystem. Fourteen compartments were considered. As a phytoplankton-based food web, it is observed that key food sources are not fully utilized as transfer efficiencies per trophic levels (TL) varies between 4.5 and 9.4%. Zooplankton plays a major role in transferring organic matter from TL1 to higher TLs due to the abundance of zooplanktivores. Shifts in food preferences and distribution of some of the fish functional groups were observed...

How does shape affect predator- prey interactions in fish? Implications for marine food web structure and dynamics ArchiMer
Cachera, Marie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Ernande, Bruno; Baheux, Mickael; Rouquette, Manuel; Chambord, Sophie; Lefebvre, Sebastien.
Each species pertains to a given functional niche, depending on its relationships with others species and its interactions with the abiotic environment. Understanding inter-specific interactions is critical to know and predict ecosystems' structure, functioning and dynamics, but also their response to anthropogenic impacts. Predator-prey relationship is one of the main biotic interactions as it both determines the survival of the prey and the predator and is the keystone of food webs. Unraveling the determinants of predator-prey relationships or, in other terms, the reason why a given predator catches a given prey is therefore of primary importance. Fishes are characterized by a remarkable diversity of shapes which can be associated by their feeding and...

Comparative analysis of trophic structure and interactions of two tropical lagoons ArchiMer
Villanueva, Ching-maria; Laleye, P; Albaret, J; Lae, Raymond; Tito De Morais, Luis; Moreau, J.
A comparative study of the Ebrie lagoon (Ivory Coast) and Lake Nokoue (Benin) was made based on ecotrophic model outputs that describe each system's structure and functioning. Two models were constructed using the Ecopath software to differentiate main biomass flows in the systems. Results indicate that biomasses and productions in both ecosystems are concentrated in trophic levels (TL) 2 and 3. Higher TL biomasses and productions in Lake Nokoue compared to Ebrie lagoon may be explained by the presence of acadjas. High production per biomass (P/B) and food consumption per biomass (Q/B) values indicate the high productivity of these systems and the abundance of juveniles in most groups which utilize these systems as refuge zones and nurseries. The...

Evaluating conservation and fisheries management strategies by linking spatial prioritization software and ecosystem and fisheries modelling tools ArchiMer
Metcalfe, Kristian; Vaz, Sandrine; Engelhard, Georg H.; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Smith, Robert J.; Mackinson, Steven.
Well-designed marine protected area (MPA) networks can deliver a range of ecological, economic and social benefits, and so a great deal of research has focused on developing spatial conservation prioritization tools to help identify important areas. However, whilst these software tools are designed to identify MPA networks that both represent biodiversity and minimize impacts on stakeholders, they do not consider complex ecological processes. Thus, it is difficult to determine the impacts that proposed MPAs could have on marine ecosystem health, fisheries and fisheries sustainability. Using the eastern English Channel as a case study, this paper explores an approach to address these issues by identifying a series of MPA networks using the Marxan and Marxan...
