The implementation of a dualistic model for scale up of a tunnel drying of cassava chips CIGR Journal
Ajala, Adeladun Stephen.
Tunnel dryer is a combination of two or more cabinet dryers arranged in a serial order in a tunnel. It has found application in drying of both food and non-food origin but its scale up process has hitherto been based on experimentation and experience without comprehensive scientific background which often leads to the poor performance of those dryers. In this study, theoretical modelling for tunnel drying which could effectively predict the dryer’s performance was developed. The modeling process involved the segmentation of drying parameters into an equipment and material models. Equipment model entails the parameters supplied by the dryer such as air temperature, velocity, humidity profiles and heat transfer to the samples being dried (cassava chips)....

VIS/NIR spectral signature for the Identification of Peanut Contamination of Powder Foods CIGR Journal
Ghosh, Satyabrata; Domínguez, Teresa R. Cuadrado; Diezma, Belén; Lleó, Lourdes; Barreiro, Pilar; Lacarra, Teresa García; Roger, Jean-Michel.
Visible-Near Infrared reflectance spectra are proposed for the characterization IRMM 481 peanuts in comparison to powder food materials: wheat flour, milk and cocoa. Multidimensional analysis of spectra of powder samples shows a specific NIR band centred at 1200 nm that identifies peanut compared to the rest of food ingredients, regardless compaction level and temperature. Spectral range 400-1000 nm is not robust for identification of blanched peanut. The visible range has shown to be reliable for the identification of pre-treatment and processing of unknown commercial peanut samples. A spectral index is proposed based on the combination of three wavelengths around 1200 nm that is 100% robust against pre-treatment (raw or blanched) and roasting (various...

Batch anaerobic digestion of banana waste - energy potential and modelling of methane production kinetics CIGR Journal
Khan, Muhammad Tahir; Brulé, Mathieu; Maurer, Claudia; Argyropoulos, Dimitrios; Müller, Joachim; Oechsner, Hans.
Different fractions of banana (stalk, peel, and flesh) as well as the whole unpeeled banana were studied in a laboratory Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) assay. After completion of 35-day digestion at 37°C in 2L-reactors, specific methane yields reached 0.256, 0.322, 0.367 and 0.349 m³/kg VS (volatile solids) for stalk, peel, flesh, and unpeeled banana respectively. Considering the country of Uganda, East Africa, the collection of peels and stalks from banana production would yield a theoretical potential of about 60 GWh of electrical energy per year in biogas plants. In order to verify the suitability of banana fractions to the biogas process, their chemical composition was analyzed, and their methane production kinetics was estimated with exponential...

Thermal Insulation of a Flour Mill to Improve Effectiveness of the Heat Treatment for Insect Pest Control CIGR Journal
Arcidiacono, C..
One of the major problems that are found in flour mills, and more generally in industries for the processing and storage of food, concerns the control of insect pests. Insects can develop and are responsible for contamination that can determine the non-conformity of productions to the norms and regulations. An alternative to chemical treatments for the control of insect pests in flour mills is given by methods based on heat treatment of indoor environment. The heat treatment consists in raising the temperature of the surfaces where the insects live by increasing the air temperature inside the building. The optimum air temperature for the effectiveness of the heat treatment ranges between 47 °C and 55 °C and must be maintained for a period of 36÷48 hours...

Numerical Simulation of Airflow in Livestock Buildings with Radial Inlet CIGR Journal
Bjarne Bjerg; Associate professor; Lars Soerensen.
The purpose of this work is to inquire the potentials of a simplified method of modelling radial inlets in numerical simulation of airflow in mechanically ventilated livestock rooms. This simplified method is based on simulation of an angle section of the entire air volume with starting point in the centre line of the inlet. Using symmetry planes as boundary condition on the sides of the angle section, and grids including only one cell in the width direction, it is possible to include three-dimensional geometry in simulations nearly equally uncomplicated as twodimensional simulations.Inside and close to the inlet the angle section method generates practically the same air velocities and pressure conditions as simulation of the entire room. At floor level...
