In the present study three different color wheat (yellow (YW), purple (PW), and black (BW)) were characterized by moisture-dependent physical and mechanical properties. The length, width and thickness were increased with an increase in moisture content, and the highest increase in length (13.46%) was observed for BW, width (8.10%) for YW, and thickness (11.41%) for PW. The geometric mean diameter, sphericity the porosity, the mass of 1000 grains, angle of repose, and coefficient of friction were increased linearly and the linear reduction was observed on bulk density and true density with an increase in moisture content. Hardness and rupture energy were decreased linearly while deformation distance increased linearly with the moisture. YW, BW, and PW can... |

Beans crop is an agricultural staple largely consumed in Brazil because it is part of the basic food of the population. Such a crop is usually grown by small growers and turns out to be of a great social and economical importance. The aim of the current manuscript was to scrutinize the effect of soil water status on its physical attributes, such as bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, hydraulic conductivity under protected environment conditions on beans crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The effect of the soil physical attributes on the biological response of the plants was also investigated. The experiment was installed in March of 2016 in a greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme with four... |

Tunnel dryer is a combination of two or more cabinet dryers arranged in a serial order in a tunnel. It has found application in drying of both food and non-food origin but its scale up process has hitherto been based on experimentation and experience without comprehensive scientific background which often leads to the poor performance of those dryers. In this study, theoretical modelling for tunnel drying which could effectively predict the dryer’s performance was developed. The modeling process involved the segmentation of drying parameters into an equipment and material models. Equipment model entails the parameters supplied by the dryer such as air temperature, velocity, humidity profiles and heat transfer to the samples being dried (cassava chips).... |

Morula nuts were characterized for several physical and mechanical properties relevant to food process engineering. Mean moisture content of the nuts which had been naturally dried under the sun was 7.65% (w.b.). Mean nut length, width and thickness were, respectively, 25.64, 21.99 and 18.03 mm, while the derived geometric mean and equivalent diameters were 21.62 and 21.72 mm, respectively. Mean surface and projected areas were 1 475.74 and 445.02 mm2, respectively, while mean nut volume was 5 371.90 mm3. Mean apparent density of the nuts was 811.30 kg/m3 while bulk density and bulk porosity were determined as 476.43 kg/m3 and 41.28%, respectively. Morula nuts are generally spherical, with mean sphericity of 84.40%, and aspect and flakiness ratios of 0.86,... |

The physical and mechanical properties of agricultural products have an effective role in determining the quality of the products, reducing the potential damage caused by transportation and eventually designing the equipment used in the processing of the products. In this study, some physical and mechanical properties of snake melon were measured under standard conditions. Physical properties included length, width, thickness; mean diameter (geometric and arithmetic), sphericity, surface area, aspect ratio, mass, volume and density. The mechanical properties of the samples and their lengths were measured under the conditions of pressure (bruise), bending (break) and cutting of the snake melons in halves using a Zwick/Roell Instron testing machine based on... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the operating performance of crop residue cutting discs with distinct cutting edges in the no-tillage system, in relation to the travel speed of the tractor/tool holder set. The experiment was carried out in an experimental area, the soil classified as Paleudalf. The experiment consisted in a factorial arrangement of 4x4, totaling 16 combinations of treatments and three replications, composed by the interaction of the factors: crop residue cutting discs (plain flat disc, wavy disc, rippled disc, and helical wavy disc coulter) and travel speed (1.11; 1.67; 2.22 and 2.78 m s-1). It was used a mobile tool holder structure for the coupling of the active organs, which was pulled by a... |

Different fractions of banana (stalk, peel, and flesh) as well as the whole unpeeled banana were studied in a laboratory Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) assay. After completion of 35-day digestion at 37°C in 2L-reactors, specific methane yields reached 0.256, 0.322, 0.367 and 0.349 m³/kg VS (volatile solids) for stalk, peel, flesh, and unpeeled banana respectively. Considering the country of Uganda, East Africa, the collection of peels and stalks from banana production would yield a theoretical potential of about 60 GWh of electrical energy per year in biogas plants. In order to verify the suitability of banana fractions to the biogas process, their chemical composition was analyzed, and their methane production kinetics was estimated with exponential... |

To investigate the effect of soil additives in reducing the effect of water deficit stress on sugar beet, an experiment was performed as a combined analysis in two regions based on randomized complete block design with four replications. Experimental treatments were location factor at two levels of Miandoab and Malekan, water deficit stress factor at three levels of 50 mm (Lack of stress), 110 mm (moderate stress) and 170 mm (severe stress) evaporation from class A evaporation pan and soil additive factor at four levels of control (no soil additives), superabsorbent, mycorrhiza and livestock manure. In the present study, the use of soil additive treatments in both regions were able to improve the yield of pure sugar compared to control. In irrigation... |

One of the major problems that are found in flour mills, and more generally in industries for the processing and storage of food, concerns the control of insect pests. Insects can develop and are responsible for contamination that can determine the non-conformity of productions to the norms and regulations. An alternative to chemical treatments for the control of insect pests in flour mills is given by methods based on heat treatment of indoor environment. The heat treatment consists in raising the temperature of the surfaces where the insects live by increasing the air temperature inside the building. The optimum air temperature for the effectiveness of the heat treatment ranges between 47 °C and 55 °C and must be maintained for a period of 36÷48 hours... |

The purpose of this work is to inquire the potentials of a simplified method of modelling radial inlets in numerical simulation of airflow in mechanically ventilated livestock rooms. This simplified method is based on simulation of an angle section of the entire air volume with starting point in the centre line of the inlet. Using symmetry planes as boundary condition on the sides of the angle section, and grids including only one cell in the width direction, it is possible to include three-dimensional geometry in simulations nearly equally uncomplicated as twodimensional simulations.Inside and close to the inlet the angle section method generates practically the same air velocities and pressure conditions as simulation of the entire room. At floor level... |

ABSTRACTThis work evaluated plastic, wooden and carton crates and compared the best of them to traditional basket for possible adoption in safe handling and transportation of fresh tomato fruits in Nigeria. This was achieved through laboratory experiments and analysis involving static tests, simulating storage conditions (at average temperature and humidity of 28.920C and 62.08% respectively) and dynamic tests, simulating handling and transportation conditions involving dropping from different heights and vibration at different amplitudes and frequency. Based on experimental results and economic considerations, carton crate was adjudged the best and a new modified design of it was developed. The performance of the designed crate and the traditional basket... |

Prior to developing a cumin thresher, the efficiency factors of cumin threshing was investigated. The effect of thresher variables including the moisture content, cylinder type and cylinder speed, feed rate and concave clearance on weight percentage of separated seeds, shattered stems and damaged seeds were studied in this research. The results showed that as moisture content increased from 7% to 13%, separated seed and damaged seed decreased from 92.8% to 90.4% and from 10.1% to 7.6%, respectively. However, increasing cylinder speed from 12.8 to 16.5 m/s, increased the percentage of separated seed, shattered stems and damaged seed. The cylinder type did not have significant effect on weight percentage of separated seed, while it had a significant... |
