Visual impairment and blindness: an overview of prevalence and causes in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Salomão,Solange R.; Mitsuhiro,Márcia R. K. H.; Belfort Jr,Rubens.
Our purpose is to provide a summary overview of blindness and visual impairment on the context of recent Brazilian ocular epidemiologic studies. Synthesis of data from two cross-sectional population-based studies - the São Paulo Eye Study and the Refractive Error in School Children Study is presented. 3678 older adults and 2441 school children were examined between July 2004 and December 2005. Prevalence of blindness in older adults using presenting visual acuity was 1.51% decreasing to 1. 07% with refractive correction. The most common causes of blindness in older adults were retinal disorders, followed by cataract and glaucoma. In school children, the prevalence of uncorrected visual impairment was 4.82% decreasing to 0.41% with refractive correction....

Pertuzumab and trastuzumab: the rationale way to synergy Anais da ABC (AABC)
RICHARD,SANDRINE; SELLE,FRÉDÉRIC; LOTZ,JEAN-PIERRE; KHALIL,AHMED; GLIGOROV,JOSEPH; SOARES,DANIELE G..
ABSTRACT It has now been 15 years since the HER2-targeted monoclonal antibody trastuzumab was introduced in clinical and revolutionized the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer patients. Despite this achievement, most patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer still show progression of their disease, highlighting the need for new therapies. The continuous interest in novel targeted agents led to the development of pertuzumab, the first in a new class of agents, the HER dimerization inhibitors. Pertuzumab is a novel recombinant humanized antibody directed against extracellular domain II of HER2 protein that is required for the heterodimerization of HER2 with other HER receptors, leading to the activation of downstream signalling pathways....

Biochemical characterization of the nuclease StoNurA from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus tokodaii Anais da ABC (AABC)
Wei,Tao; Yang,Kunpeng; Zang,Jie; Mao,Duobin.
Abstract The DNA nuclease gene ST2109 has been cloned from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus tokodaii and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein StoNurA has been purified to homogeneity by affinity chromatography and gel filtration chromatography. Biochemical analyses demonstrated that StoNurA exhibited DNA binding and 5’–3’ exonuclease activities towards ssDNA and dsDNA. The temperature and pH optima of StoNurA were determined to be 65 °C and 8.0, respectively. The activity of StoNurA was found to be dependent of Mn2+, and its half-life of heat inactivation at 100 °C was 5 min. Gel filtration chromatography revealed that StoNurA could form dimers in solution. Pull-down assays also showed that StoNurA physically interacted with a...

The central role of RNA in the genetic programming of complex organisms Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mattick,John S..
Notwithstanding lineage-specific variations, the number and type of protein-coding genes remain relatively static across the animal kingdom. By contrast there has been a massive expansion in the extent of genomic non-proteincoding sequences with increasing developmental complexity. These non-coding sequences are, in fact, transcribed in a regulated manner to produce large numbers of large and small non-protein-coding RNAs that control gene expression at many levels including chromatin architecture, post-transcriptional processing and translation. Moreover, many RNAs are edited, especially in the nervous system, which may be the basis of epigenome-environment interactions and the function of the brain.

TL, OSL and C-14 dating results of the sediments and bricks from mummified nuns' grave Anais da ABC (AABC)
Tudela,Diego R.G.; Tatumi,Sonia H.; Yee,Márcio; Brito,Silvio L.M.; Morais,José L.; Morais,Daisy de; Piedade,Silvia C.; Munita,Casimiro S.P.; Hazenfratz,Roberto.
This paper presents the results of TL and OSL dating of soil and fragments of bricks from a grave, which was occupied by two mummified nuns, found at "Luz" Monastery, located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The TL and OSL ages were compared to C-14 dating ones obtained from bone collagens of the mummies. The majority of the ages is related to the eighteenth century. The gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to evaluate natural radioisotope concentrations in the samples, and by using these concentrations the annual dose rates, from 3.0 to 5.3 Gy/kyr, were obtained. Neutron activation analysis was performed and the radioisotope contents results are in agreement with those obtained by gamma-ray spectroscopy. The contents of U, Th and Ce elements were higher than...

Apoptotic cell and phagocyte interplay: recognition and consequences in different cell systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moreira,Maria Elisabete C.; Barcinski,Marcello A..
Cell death by apoptosis is characterized by specific biochemical changes, including the exposure of multiple ligands, expected to tag the dying cell for prompt recognition by phagocytes. In non-pathological conditions, an efficient clearance is assured by the redundant interaction between apoptotic cell ligands and multiple receptor molecules present on the engulfing cell surface. This review concentrates on the molecular interactions operating in mammalian and non-mammalian systems for apoptotic cell recognition, as well as on the consequences of their signaling. Furthermore, some cellular models where the exposure of the phosphatidylserine (PS) phospholipid, a classical hallmark of the apoptotic phenotype, is not followed by cell death will be discussed.

The pathogenesis of Chagas' disease: when autoimmune and parasite-specific immune responses meet Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOARES,MILENA B. P.; PONTES-DE-CARVALHO,LAIN; RIBEIRO-DOS-SANTOS,RICARDO.
Chagas' disease is a major health problem in Latin America, where it constitutes one of the leading causes of heart failure. About one fourth of Trypanosoma cruzi-infected individuals develop chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy (CChC), the most severe form of the disease. CChC is histologically characterized by the presence of multifocal inflammatory infiltrates in the heart, composed mainly by mononuclear cells, usually adhered to myocytes and leading to myocytolysis, and frequently by interstitial fibrosis. The pathogenesis of CChC is still unclear, despite intense investigations both in human beings and in animal models of the disease. Although tissue parasitism is rare in the chronic phase of infection, an immune response targeted to persistent parasites...

Analysis of pollen load based on color, physicochemical composition and botanical source Anais da ABC (AABC)
Modro,Anna F.H.; Silva,Izabel C.; Luz,Cynthia F.P.; Message,Dejair.
Pollen load samples from 10 hives of Apis mellifera (L.) were analyzed based on their physicochemical composition and botanical source, considering color as a parameter for quality control. In seven samples it was possible to establish the occurrence of more than 80% of a single pollen type, characterizing them as unifloral but with protein content variation. One of the samples was exclusively composed of saprophytic fungi (Cladosporium sp.). Comparing the mean results of the fungi loads with those of the nutritional components of pollen load, the former presented higher protein, mineral matter and dry matter and lower organic matter, ethereal extract and total carbohydrate values. The monochromatic samples met the physicochemical specifications regulating...

Morpho-anatomical, physiological and biochemical changes in rubber tree seeds Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,GENAINA A. DE; DIAS,DENISE C.F.S.; PIMENTA,THALINE M.; CARDOSO,AMANDA Á.; PIRES,RAQUEL M.O.; ALVARENGA,ANTÔNIO P.; PÍCOLI,EDGARD A.T..
ABSTRACT The physical, physiological and biochemical changes during the development until the dispersal of rubber tree seeds were evaluated with the purpose of estimating the point at physiological maturity. A total of 30 plants were selected at different points in a commercial planting area and had their flowers marked during the anthesis and every 15 days after marking. Fruits and seeds were collected for analysis of moisture content, dry matter, diameter and length. Details of the anatomy ultra-structure of the seeds were evaluated. The seed emergence, emergency speed index, heat resistant proteins and oxidative stress enzymes were examined. It was observed that fruits reached maximum size at 120 days after anthesis and seeds at 150 days. The seeds...

Unenlagiid theropods: are they members of the Dromaeosauridae (Theropoda, Maniraptora)? Anais da ABC (AABC)
Agnolin,Federico L.; Novas,Fernando E..
In the present paper we analyze the phylogenetic position of the derived Gondwanan theropod clade Unenlagiidae. Although this group has been frequently considered as deeply nested within Deinonychosauria and Dromaeosauridae, most of the features supporting this interpretation are conflictive, at least. Modification of integrative databases, such as that recently published by Hu et al. (2009), produces significant changes in the topological distribution of taxa within Deinonychosauria, depicting unenlagiids outside this clade. Our analysis retrieves, in contrast, a monophyletic Avialae formed by Unenlagiidae plus Aves.

Protolith age of Santa Maria Chico granulites dated on zircons from an associated amphibolite-facies granodiorite in southernmost Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Hartmann,Léo A.; Liu,Dunyi; Wang,Yenbin; Massonne,Hans-Joachim; Santos,João O.S..
U-Pb dating of zircon was undertaken with the Beijing SHRIMP II (sensitive high resolution ion microprobe) on anamphibolite facies granodiorite and an almandine-albite granulite from the Santa Maria Chico Granulitic Complex, southern Brazilian Shield. This work was also done to unravel protolith ages which are often hidden in the array of partly reset data. The obtained metamorphic ages of the granodiorite gneiss and the granulite are 2035 ± 9 Ma and 2006 ± 3 Ma, respectively. These data are within the range of metamorphic ages determined in previous studies (2022 ± 18 Ma and 2031 ± 40 Ma). However, protolith ages for the granodiorite (2366 ± 8 Ma) and the granulite (2489 ± 6 Ma) were obtained which are outside the previously recognized range (>...

Cancer, Photodynamic Therapy and Porphyrin-Type Derivatives Anais da ABC (AABC)
GOMES,ANA T.P.C.; NEVES,MARIA G.P.M.S.; CAVALEIRO,JOSÉ A.S..
ABSTRACT This review has two parts. The first one gives an approach to interdisciplinary studies against cancer carried out by many scientists using porphyrin-type substrates as photosensitizers in PDT. Intensive studies were performed for almost six decades. The successes really started in 1993 with the first formulation patented under the trade name Photofrin, which was immediately approved in several countries to treat certain types of cancer. Photofrin is still used although certain negative features soon became well known. That has motivated the search for better new photosensitizers. Several ones were developed, evaluated and a few of them had clinical approval. This group includes porphyrin derivatives and pro-drugs (aminolevulinic acid and its...

Pampean lizard assemblage from subtropical Brazil: a temporal analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Winck,Gisele R.; Santos,Tiago G. Dos; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The increasing human occupation of natural environments is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. To mitigate the negative anthropogenic effects, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of natural populations and the natural history of species. A study was conducted with an assemblage of lizards from a disturbed area of the Pampa biome, from February 2001 to January 2004. The assemblage showed a unimodal seasonal pattern, with the recruitment period occurring during the warmer months. The captures were seasonal for two of the three monitored years, and concentrated within warmer months. The minimum temperature explained the number of catches for the assemblage as a whole. However, when the species were analyzed individually, the temperature...

A new class of lifetime models and the evaluation of the confidence intervals by double percentile bootstrap Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARINHO,PEDRO R.D.; BOURGUIGNON,MARCELO; SILVA,RODRIGO B.; CORDEIRO,GAUSS M..
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new three-parameter distribution by compounding the Nadarajah-Haghighi and geometric distributions, which can be interpreted as a truncated Marshall-Olkin extended Weibull. The compounding procedure is based on the work by Marshall and Olkin 1997. We prove that the new distribution can be obtained as a compound model with mixing exponential distribution. It can have decreasing, increasing, upside-down bathtub, bathtub-shaped, constant and decreasing-increasing-decreasing failure rate functions depending on the values of the parameters. Some mathematical properties of the new distribution are studied including moments and quantile function. The maximum likelihood estimation procedure is discussed and a particle swarm...

Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of a Geissospermum vellosii stem bark fraction Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIMA,JOSÉLIA A.; COSTA,THIAGO W.R.; SILVA,LEANDRO L.; MIRANDA,ANA LUÍSA P.; PINTO,ANGELO C..
ABSTRACT Geissospermum vellosii (Pao pereira) is a Brazilian tree whose stem barks are rich in indole alkaloids that present intense anticholinesterase activity. The present study evaluated the effects of a stem bark fraction (PPAC fraction) and ethanolic extract (EE) of Pao pereira in classic murine models of inflammation and pain. The EE and PPAC fraction, both at a dose of 30 mg/kg, significantly reduced mice abdominal constriction induced by acetic acid by 34.8% and 47.5%, respectively. In the formalin test, EE (30 mg/kg) and PPAC fraction (30 and 60 mg/kg) inhibited only the second phase, by 82.8%, 84.9% and 100%, respectively. Compared with indomethacin, similar doses of EE or PPAC fraction were approximately twice as effective in causing...
