Detecting changes in animal communities suggests that a reference situation exists. It is a particularly difficult task in estuarine environments that are complex and fluctuate with time. Effects of human pressures are difficult to assess due to the scarcity or even the lack of evaluation and monitoring systems. In order to detect anomalies in the functioning of the system and to identify effects of perturbations upon populations and communities, it is necessary to analyse the dynamics in order to infer a reference state. This work aims to describe an approach based on K-Tab analyses and allows to define an average situation called "compromise" which is then compared to a single year of data. In this situation, the Gironde estuary, which has been monitored... |

[ 1] The Davis Strait transform margin was studied using a 630-km-long wide-angle reflection/ refraction seismic transect extending from SE Baffin Island to Greenland. Dense airgun shots were recorded by 28 ocean bottom seismometers deployed along the line. A P wave velocity model was developed from forward and inverse modeling of the wide-angle data and incorporation of coincident deep multichannel reflection seismic data. Off Baffin Island in the Saglek Basin, 7 to 11-km-thick two-layered continental crust (5.8 - 6.6 km/s) is observed. Off Greenland, continental crust is divided into three layers (5.4 - 6.8 km/s) with a maximum thickness of 20 km. Farther offshore Greenland the crust... |

Robust regional seismic-hazard assessments require millennial-scale paleoseismic histories that extend far beyond the range of historical and instrumental data. However, it is difficult to resolve the probability density functions for earthquake recurrence from the limited number of major to great earthquakes most paleoseismic records contain. Lake sediment records are repositories of information about paleoearthquake recurrence, with a sensitivity and fidelity over millennial time scales that suggest that they have the potential to yield reliable estimates of the recurrence distribution. We present a 7000 yr paleoseismic record from Lake Tutira (North Island, New Zealand) that ranks among the most detailed Holocene paleoearthquake chronologies available... |

Isotope ratios of U-236/U-238 were measured at levels below 10(-7) by single collector ICPMS with a tandem quadrupole mass separation mechanism. Peak tailing of the prominent U-238(+) ion beam on the U-236(+) peak was reduced to the level of similar to 10(-10) by use of two quadrupole mass filters. The (UH+)-U-235 interference on U-236(+) was efficiently reduced to a UH+/U+ ratio of 1 x 10(-8) by an ion-molecule reaction between UH+ and O-2 in a collision/reaction cell placed between the two quadrupoles. The resultant detection limit for U-236/U-238 measurement was better than those reported by any other ICPMS study. The U-236/U-238 ratios, measured as (UO+)-U-236-O-16/(UO+)-U-238-O-16, were determined in the range 10(-9) to 10(-7) without correction for... |

Tahiti’s pearl farming industry plays a major socio-economic role in French Polynesia. In an increasingly competitive market where the production of high quality pearls becomes essential, research can help secure and ensure sustainable production. In that context, Ifremer, in close collaboration with the “direction des resources marines” (French Polynesian government agency) has developed research projects on the “sustainable development of pearl farming”. This program is organized along 3 axes: (1) understanding the animal physiology and initiating a genetically selective breeding program of donor oysters; (2) understanding pearl oyster larvae dispersal and recruitment; (3) understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying biomineralization processes... |

In a recent paper we reconstructed the calcification depth of G. truncatulinoides since the last deglaciation in the Florida Straits. We highlighted a significantly different calcification depth between 8-10 ka and the late Holocene. This migration was found in three different cores over the western North Atlantic American continental margin. This paper presents new Mg/Ca ratio data on G. truncatulinoides in the Florida Strait and new stable isotopic measurements on G. crassaformis in the Gulf of Mexico. Preliminary interpretation to understand the cause of G. truncatulinoides migration in the water column at the beginning of the Holocene is given. |

Perkinsosis is one of the most widespread diseases affecting commercially important species of molluscs globally. We examined the impact of Perkinsus spp. on shell growth at the individual scale in 2 clam species: Ruditapes decussatus from Mundaka Estuary (Spain) and R. philippinarum from Arcachon Bay (France). At Arcachon, 2 contrasting sites in terms of environment and Perkinsus olseni presence were chosen: Arguin (disease-free) and Ile aux Oiseaux (infected site). We monitored the dynamics of perkinsosis over the course of the experiment at Mundaka and Ile aux Oiseaux. Prevalences were high (>70%), and intensities were around 10(5) cells g(-1) wet gills at Ile aux Oiseaux, and 10(6) cells g(-1) at Mundaka. No... |

Background: Diatoms represent the predominant group of eukaryotic phytoplankton in the oceans and are responsible for around 20% of global photosynthesis. Two whole genome sequences are now available. Notwithstanding, our knowledge of diatom biology remains limited because only around half of their genes can be ascribed a function based onhomology-based methods. High throughput tools are needed, therefore, to associate functions with diatom-specific genes. Results: We have performed a systematic analysis of 130,000 ESTs derived from Phaeodactylum tricornutum cells grown in 16 different conditions. These include different sources of nitrogen, different concentrations of carbon dioxide, silicate and iron, and abiotic stresses such as low temperature and low... |

Following the trials conducted in 1958/59 by German trawlers, the I.S.T.P.M. tested for the first time, in 1960, on the Roselys, a 120 CV oceanographic research vessel, a pelagic trawl using a boat equipped with a headrope sounder. The trawl was a double panel trawl with an opening perimeter of 500 80 mm meshes. The lateral opening was made through hydrodynamic Süberkrüb doors of 1,7 sq. meters and 130 kg. Finally, an Atlas Werke netzsonde whose oscillator was set on a platform towed behind a headrope, was transmitting information about the opening and sinkage depth of the trawl to the bridge. The cable only had one conductor and the answer was transmitted through the water. Since then, new cables with two coaxial conductors have been used and results are... |

The coupled system FlowCAM/ZooPhytoImage has become a real operational tool in 2014. However, to be fully adapted to the observations of phytoplankton performed in the context of the REPHY observation network and in order to better respond to present and future requests concerning the evaluation of quality of coastal and marine waters within the European requirements, such as the WFD and MSFD, new functionalities must be integrated into existing tools. Therefore, different axis of development have been proposed by UMONS and Ifremer to adapt both the digitization device and the Zoo/PhytoImage software to the constraints defined by the REPHY. First, version 5 of Zoo/PhytoImage contains recent innovations such as the... |
