In Ayurvedic practice Butea monosperma (Palash) is in clinical use for hundreds of years as a contraceptive. Seeds of Butea monosperma are also used as an anthelmitic (Ansani et al., 1979) and antimicrobial (Avirutnant & Pongpan, 1983). Butea monosperma (Fabaceae family) locally known as Palash (Dhak) if given for 3 consecutive days acts as an antifertility agent for which it has been is traditionally used since time immemorial. The objective of the present study was to search the effect of Butea monosperma seeds on the ovary of mice. Observations in the present study were massive degeneration of ova in almost all the follicles, irrespective of the stage of their development. The ova from treated animals showed different stages of necrotic process.... |

This study aims to assess the efficiency of using real-scale knee models to learn about the locomotor system. Participants included a total of thirty-nine second year students in a Human Anatomy class of a Biology Teaching course. One week before the intervention, a pre-test was administered to assess the students' prior knowledge. The pre-service biology teachers were provided with a real-scale plaster model of a knee bone and were subsequently required to identify and create their own model of bone, joint and muscle elements. At the end of the intervention, a post-test was performed and opinion survey, in addition to a comparison with other locomotor system structures (four images: knee joint, muscular component of lower limb, shoulder joint and pelvic... |

Although being used for years in the treatment of tuberculosis, no data are available in the literature on the safety of pyrazinamide during pregnancy. Accordingly, we aimed to make a first approach to this problem by evaluating the effects of this drug administered during the entire pregnancy of albino rats. Fourty female, EPM-1 Wistar albino rats of about 250 g b.w. were used. Upon conception (day zero of pregnancy) the animals were randomly divided in 4 groups of 10 rats each and labeled as follows. Controls (C), animals treated with the drug vehicle (destilled water); experimental groups (E1, E2 and E3), animals treated with 35, 105 or 315 mg/kg b.w. pyrazinamide by gavage (oral route) once daily up to the term (20th day of pregnancy). Drug or vehicle... |

Coronaviruses are enveloped, positive-stranded RNA, belongs to the Nidovirales order, Coronaviridae family and are classified into three groups. Groups 3a and 3c comprising the avian coronaviruses. They are worldwide in distribution and can cause respiratory, enteric and in some cases hepatitis and neurological diseases in a wide variety of animals, resulting in economic losses to breeders and breeding. In this study, we describe an outbreak of diarrhea in a herd of capybaras found in the city of Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The animals had sudden symptoms of anorexia, profuse and watery diarrhea, yellowish or greenish, dehydration, weight loss, sharp and twisting of limbs leading to death in less than a week, mostly weaned and with an age of three... |

Developmental pathologies may result from endogenous or xenobiotic-enhanced formation of reacting oxygen species (ROS), which oxidatively damage cellular macromolecules and/or alter signal transduction, and that the embryonic processes regulating the balance of ROS formation, oxidative DNA damage and repair, and ROS-mediated signal transduction may be important determinants of teratological risk. ROS can oxidize molecular targets such as DNA, protein, lipid in a process called oxidative stress resulting in cellular dysfunction and in utero death or teratogenicity. This review, consisting of literature search of journals and chapters in books aims at highlighting the importance of the cerebellum in controlling various motor activities in the body, as well... |

A multimedia program has been developed at the Departament of Human Anatomy, Medicine School of Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. It offers an alternative to support the traditional laboratory practice and resolve, during the dissection, the most common problems that we have already identify in our students. Some features of this program are: photography's, diagrams, information about the structures, clinical correlation and tests. All this tools were integrated in a software using Macromedia Flash. The final result is a multimedia program that will be used by students during their laboratory practice. At present, we are making a study to determine the effect that is produced in the development of the students in the anatomy lab |

The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence, location and morphology of maxillary sinus septa, and in particular sagittally orientated forms, which cannot be visualized by classic 2D x-rays. Thereby authors would like to provide information about the potential patient group, to be referred for the computed tomography scan before sinus lift procedure. The analysis was based on 216 computed tomography archival images. The exclusion criterion was occurrence of any suspected pathology in the maxillary region. The septa prevalence that was investigated in computed tomography was high (49%) with the mean height of 5.44 mm. The incidence of sagittally orientated septa as a challenge in 2D x-rays was 10%, with the second molar region as the most frequent... |

The recurrent laryngeal nerve has been reported to supply cardiac branches to the cardiac plexus. A review of anatomical literature on the existing term used to describe these branches revealed that varying interpretations and descriptions exist among various authors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the origin and incidence of branches from the recurrent laryngeal nerves to the cardiac plexus and their connections with sympathetic cardiac nerves. The sample comprised 40 cadaveric fetuses (n=80) (gestational ages: 16-30 weeks). The recurrent laryngeal cardiac nerve was described as the cardiac branch that originated directly from the recurrent laryngeal nerve and reached the superficial or deep parts of the cardiac plexus. This study found the... |

Evidence shows a clear racial variation in the position of the mental foramen. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the morphometry of the mental foramen in different populations is essential in clinical dentistry when administering regional anesthesia, and performing peripheral surgery in the mental region of the mandible. The goal of this study was to elucidate the morphological features and precise anatomical position of the mental foramen with reference to surrounding anatomical landmarks in an adult Sri Lankan population. A total of fifty one adult dry mandibles were assessed to determine the number, shape, orientation, vertical and transverse diameters of the mental foramen and the distance between the mental foramen and symphysis menti. The position of... |

Anomalies arising in the embryological development of the aortic arch and its branches are essencial in the emergence of variations in the origin and course of supra aortic vessels. Classically, 95% of cases, the aortic arch gives rise to the brachiocephalic artery, left common carotid artery and left subclavian artery. While the left vertebral artery arises normally from the left subclavian artery. In this presentation we describe two cases of the left vertebral artery being born of the aortic arch. The importance of anatomical knowledge of this arterial variety is fundamental for base neck and aortic arch surgery, in cervicothoracic trauma that compromises the vascular elements and in endovascular procedures in the region. |
