THE SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SYNDROME RELATED TO THE RELEASE OF CYTOKINES FOLLOWING SEVERE ENVENOMATION J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
VORONOV,E.; APTE,R. N.; SOFER,S..
Envenomation by insects, snakes, scorpions, and spiders involves the activation of the inflammatory system with the release and activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemotactic mediators, cellular infiltration, and other vasoactive mediators. Activation of the inflammatory system and its cascade of events play a major role in the pathogenesis of envenomation, its clinical picture, and outcome. Additional clinical and laboratory studies are required to characterize the exact mechanisms by which the inflammatory system affects the pathophysiology, clinical course, and complications following envenomations. A better understanding of the involvement of the inflammatory cascade in different envenoming syndromes may have future therapeutic benefits.

TOXICOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE PLANT Xanthium strumarium IN PIGS IN ZIMBABWE J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
MASVINGWE,C.; MAVENYENGWA,M..
Major clinical signs were depression, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness, recumbency, paddling convulsions terminating in death from 6 to 96 hours after ingestion. Gross pathological findings included ascites with fibrin strands, enlarged, congested and friable livers with accentuation of lobulation on the capsule. Microscopically, acute hepatic congestion and hemorrhage, centrilobular hepatocyte necrosis, with occasional binucleation together with discoid lysis of skeletal and cardiac muscle fibers were remarkable changes. Binucleation of hepatocytes and degenerative changes in active muscles have not been reported before in relation to cocklebur plant toxicosis. These findings suggest that X. strumarium is a potential cause of sudden death in pigs...

Tc 99m - SCORPION VENOM: LABELLING, BIODISTRIBUTION AND SCINTIIMAGING J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
MURUGESAN,S.; RADHA KRISHNA MURTHY,K.; NORONHA,O. P. D.; SAMUEL,A. M..
Labelling of scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus concanesis Pocock) venom was successfully achieved with Tc 99m using direct tin reduction procedure. Biodistribution studies were carried out in Wistar rats at different time intervals after i.v. administration of the labelled venom. Scintiimages were obtained after scorpion envenoming using a large field of view gamma camera to ascertain the pharmacological action of venom in the body. Within 5 min of administration, labelled venom was found in the blood (27.7%), muscle (30.11%), bone (13.3%), kidneys (11.5%), liver (10.4%), and other organs. The level of venom in the kidneys was higher than in the liver. The labelled venom was excreted through renal and hepatobiliary pathways. An immunoreactivity study was...

THE IMPROVEMENT AND STANDARDIZATION OF ANTIVENOM PRODUCTION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: COMPARING ANTIVENOM QUALITY, THERAPEUTICAL EFFICIENCY, AND COST J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
KRIFI,M. N.; EL AYEB,M.; DELLAGI,K..
The first antivenom was prepared by Calmette in 1894. More than a century later, it is still the only specific treatment for envenoming. The methods currently used by almost all antivenom producers worldwide to isolate and concentrate antivenom antibodies and their enzymatically derived fragments are improvements of those originally developed by Pope in 1938. Several new alternatives have been proposed to produce F(ab')2 or Fab antivenoms to improve their purity, neutralizing potency, and safety and to overcome the problems encountered in the production protocols based on ammonium sulfate precipitation of equine immunoglobulin. These include complete or partial modifications in the antivenom production regarding animal producers (ovine, laying hens...),...

Epidemiological survey of scorpion envenomation in southwestern Morocco J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
TOULOUN,O.; SLIMANI,T.; BOUMEZZOUGH,A..
The high frequency and severity of scorpion envenomation in Morocco is a serious public health problem, especially in semi arid and arid areas with a large rural population. In view of this alarming situation, we have conducted this investigation on scorpion envenomation in the Haouz and Souss plains between 1994 and 1998. Preliminary results have shown a high rate of scorpion envenomation with several deaths. With the exception of Scorpio maurus, the suspected species are generally anthropophilous, which belong to the Androctonus genera of the Buthidae family. The Buthidae family is responsible for 96.93% of the envenomings. In the southwestern Morocco, the death rate is of about 3.84%. The Androctonus mauretanicus is responsible for 60% of deaths. We...

SUB-LETHAL INJECTION OF COBRA VENOM DECREASES ADENOSINE DEAMINASE, HISTAMINE, AND IgE IN ORGANS OF MICE J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
LIPPS,B. V..
The pharmacological substances adenosine deaminase (ADA), histamine, and IgE are endogenously present in animals. They are implicated in allergy and asthma and detectable in blood serum. This research reports the presence of ADA, histamine, and IgE at varying levels in almost all major organs of mice. This research further reports that intramuscular injection of sub-lethal dose of Naja kaouthia venom disrupted homeostasis and lowered the levels of ADA, histamine, and IgE in the organs of mice. Adult Balb/C male mice were injected with a half lethal dose of the venom. The mice were sacrificed at 2, 8, and 24 hours post-injection and different organs were collected. Organs were homogenized, centrifuged, and the supernatants were assayed for ADA, histamine,...
