Between 1874 and 1877 the marquis L. de Folin and F. Bérillon published several papers on the non-marine mollusks of the southwesternmost part of France. In this series of papers, for obscure reasons published under three different headings, various new nominal molluscan taxa are introduced. Their correct citing and dating is important therefore. Because these data cannot be found in the literature, we considered it useful to summarize the results of our bibliographical investigations. As a by-product of our studies some notes are given concerning certain papers by De Folin alone and a contribution which is attributable to Barrois. De Folin & Bérillon (1874-1877) published their "Catalogue", "Etudes" and "Contributions" in two journals, which are not... |

Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region. |

Background: Many groups of land snails show great interspecific diversity in shell ornamentation, which may include spines on the shell and flanges on the aperture. Such structures have been explained as camouflage or defence, but the possibility that they might be under sexual selection has not previously been explored. Presentation of the hypothesis: The hypothesis that is presented consists of two parts. First, that shell ornamentation is the result of sexual selection. Second, that such sexual selection has caused the divergence in shell shape in different species. Testing the hypothesis: The first part of the hypothesis may be tested by searching for sexual dimorphism in shell ornamentation in gonochoristic snails, by searching for increased... |

The following new taxa are described: Drymaeus ( Drymaeus) cleefi, Drymaeus (Drymaeus) palassus and Drymaeus (Drymaeus) yapacanensis. The variation in the size of the sculpture of the protoconch is analyzed and two groups, which roughly correspond to the subgenera Drymaeus and Mesembrinus, are distinguished. Furthermore the variation in the mandibula and radula of 46 species is analyzed. Anatomical data are presented for 52 species and four species are redescribed. |

In 1959 the first author (A.C.v.B.) discovered a peculiar snail of the pulmonate family Endodontidae in Rhodesia; on a subsequent expedition more specimens were obtained, so that a series is now available for description. The species undoubtedly belongs to the genus Trachycystis Pilsbry, 1893, but a new subgenus has to be created in order to accomodate this particular species. Anatomical data and figures have been supplied by the second author (B.V.), while the first author is responsible for the remaining part of text and figures. Dendrotrichia subgen. nov. A subgenus of Trachycystis characterised by ramose bristles on the surface of the shell; genital anatomy like that of subgenus Chalcocystis. Type species: Trachycystis (Dendrotrichia) sylvicola spec.... |

The molluscs of the brackish waters in the Netherlands (Mollusca) The Netherlands is a river delta rich in brackish waters. The organisms in these waters need to be adapted to extreme conditions, especially large fluctuations in chlorinity. However, several species occur optimally in this habitat. In this paper a review is presented of the molluscs living in brackish waters in the Netherlands. All available data from literature, collections, literature and databanks were compiled for this cause. In The Netherlands a large variety of brackish waters can be found, like lakes, canals, old creeks, shallow pools, lagoons, estuaries and dykes. This paper focusses on the waters on the landside of the dikes. All species found in these waters are treated here.... |

Several forms of Albinaria idaea (L. Pfeiffer, 1849) have been described as (sub)species from various sites on Mt. Ida (Central Crete). In recent years, however, much additional material has been collected, which made clear that no sharp boundaries exist between these forms. Moreover, several characters proved to be altitude dependent to a certain extent. It may be concluded that on Mt. Ida only a single evolutionary entity can be distinguished, viz. A. i. idaea. On the isolated Mt. Kedros, south-west of Mt. Ida, an undescribed allopatric form was found, which because of its smaller size and differences in altitude dependent characters was given subspecific rank as A. i. amabilis ssp. nov. On the Paximadia Isles, south of Central Crete, a percostate and a... |

This paper documents the species of Pectinoidea Rafinesque, 1815 collected in Vanuatu during the SANTO 2006 expedition. A total of 49 species (13 Propeamussiidae Abbott, 1954, 4 Cyclochlamydidae n. fam., 1 Entoliidae Teppner, 1922, and 31 Pectinidae Rafinesque, 1815) are represented, of which 70% are new records for Vanuatu. A new family, Cyclochlamydidae n. fam., is established for the genera Cyclochlamys Finlay, 1926, Chlamydella Iredale, 1929 and Micropecten n. gen., formerly placed in Propeamussiidae, but differing by their sculptured prodissoconch (smooth in Propeamussiidae), an occasionally antimarginally sculptured right valve (smooth or weak commarginally sculptured in Propeamussiidae), a (common) simple outer prismatic layer of longitudinally... |

During my stay in Surinam (Dutch Guiana) in the first three months of 1963 most of my time was devoted to the study of the marine Mollusca, on which I shall report later. Now and then, however, I had an opportunity of collecting non marines. The following notes are the result of the study of some of the land snails in the material I collected. SUBULINIDAE Leptinaria (Luntia) insignis (E. A. Smith) Luntia insignis Smith, 1898, Journ. Conchol. 9: 28, fig. 8 (Trinidad); Pilsbry, 1906, Man. Conch. The moment to collate scattered notes on South West African non-marine molluscs arrived last year when Mr. B. H. Lamoral of the Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg (South Africa), entrusted the present author with the study of material obtained during a Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (C.S.I.R., Pretoria)-sponsored collecting trip. During Mr. Lamoral's explorations in 1969 in South West Africa non-marine molluscs were obtained as a sideline. Nevertheless the material is certainly considered sufficiently interesting to warrant publication. South West African material from various sources was studied and the following abbreviations have been used: BM for British Museum (Natural History), London; NM for Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg; RMNH for... |

The following notes mostly concern the description of new species from East Africa in connection with renewed work on a check-list of the non-marine Mollusca of that area which has been in preparation during the past 25 years. A fairly complete manuscript has been available for many years but additional material and further research continually render it in need of revision. Previous notes in this series were published in Basteria, the last being Verdcourt (1978). A number of the professional photos have been kindly made by Mr. A. 't Hooft of the Department of Systematics and Evolutionary Biology of the University, Leiden; Dr. A. C. van Bruggen of the same university department has made the paper ready for the press. The following abbreviations are used in... |
