The objective of this work was to study the seed germination and seedling growth of A. cearensis (Allemão) A. C. Sm. influenced by seed weight and under different temperature and light conditions. Seeds were individually weighed and divided into three weight classes (light, medium and heavy), and each was subjected to germination tests under two light conditions (presence or absence) and six temperature regimes (20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 20-30°C). The experiment was established with a completely randomized design in a split-split plot arrangement with four replicates. We determined the first count, final germination percentage and germination speed index. To assess seedling growth, the length and dry mass of the epicotyl and root + hypocotyl axis were also... |

This study described the reproductive biology of a population of the weakly electric fish Eigenmannia trilineata from southern Brazil, providing the information on the estimation of reproductive period, fecundity, spawning type, first maturation size, and analysis of gonadal morphology and histology of the species, relating these data to alimentary and abiotic characters. The species showed a relatively long reproductive period, a relative fecundity of 0.27 oocytes per mg of total weight and a parcelled spawning type. First maturation size estimated for the females was 80.5 mm and for the males 63.5 mm of total length. Sex ratio did not differ from 1:1 under a X²test (α= 0.01) during all the sampled months. Sexual dimorphism was related to total length,... |

Production of fumonisins B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) by two Brasilian strains (LAMIC 2999/96 and 113F) and one American strain (NRRL 13616) of Fusarium moniliforme were evaluated in laboratory cultures subjected to different temperatures (20, 25, and 30ºC), and moisture contents (25, 34, and 42%) on corn substrate. The cultures were grown during 10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 days, totalizing 135 treatments with two repetitions for each one. The fumonisins were extracted with acetonitrile/water. The clean-up with end-capped C18 silica (C18ec) cartridges and fumonisin derivatization with o-phtaldialdeyde were carried out through an automated sample processor system (ASPEC), followed by quantification of the toxins through HPLC. Fumonisin production varied widely,... |

Aspergillus, Penicillium, Phoma, Mucor. |

The composition and the seasonality of the natural populations of Drosophila species in relation to the climatic variables temperature and rainfall were analyzed from September 1998 through October 1999 by monthly collections, in two woodlands in the Northwest of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The diversity dominance component curves were inclined, reflecting low diversity and high dominance of few species. Among the 25 species recorded, Drosophila sturtevanti Duda, 1927 was the most frequent and abundant. On the opposite to data in literature, D. paranaensis Barros, 1950 abundance and frequency were greater than those from D. mercatorum Patterson & Wheeler, 1942. A positive correlation between abundance and rainfall was observed for D. nebulosa... |

The factors influencing the structure of hydrothermal communities are not necessarily similar across geographical regions and vent fields. In the present study, we explore the role of environmental conditions on vent community structure at local and regional spatial scales, focusing on the assemblages dominated by the engineer species Bathymodiolus azoricus. Their presence in several vent fields on the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) represents a unique opportunity to compare their associated fauna and to better understand large-scale biodiversity patterns. Two types of factors were considered: exogenous ones such as the presence of biogeographical barriers, depth, and distance between sites, and those linked to the intrinsic characteristics of each... |

The alterations to the hydrologic regime downstream from hydroelectric dams may cause an impact on the reproductive success of fishes. This study aimed to analyse the influence of the physical and chemical parameters of the water of the Grande and Pardo Rivers on gonadal maturation, oocyte diameter, follicular atresia and biological indices of Pimelodus maculatus collected from three river sections: Grande River, downstream from the Porto Colômbia dam (S1), Grande River, downstream from the confluence with the Pardo River (S2) and in the Pardo River channel (S3). Males and females captured in S1 presented significantly higher average values for total length and body weight than those captured in S2 and S3. The gonadosomatic index values were significantly... |

The spatial and temporal distribution of the shrimp Artemesia longinaris in Fortaleza Bay, northern coast of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, in relation to abiotic factors, was studied. Shrimp samples were obtained on a monthly basis from November 1988 through October 1989 at seven pre-delimited transects on board of a fishing vessel supplied with double otter trawl nets. Depth was recorded at the midpoint of each transect; water and sediment samples were taken to measure salinity, temperature, texture and organic matter content of sediment. The shrimps obtained in the trawls were sorted, identified and 100 g subsample at each transect was separated for measurements (carapace length). A total of 3,083 individuals were obtained. Shrimps were more abundant from... |

The reproductive cycle of the edible echinoid Tripneustes gratilla (Linneaus 1758) was investigated in a population located in the southwest coast of Madagascar (Toliara). The reproductive cycle was followed for two consecutive years (October 1999 to October 2001) and characterised by means of gonad and maturity indices. T. gratilla has an annual reproductive cycle mediated by seawater temperature, day length and feeding activity. The histology of the gonads revealed six different maturity stages grouped in three main reproductive phases: growing and maturing, spawning, and spent and recovering. Reproduction is seasonal. Growing and maturing stages occurred from late summer to early winter correlating with decreasing temperatures and day length. Spawning... |
