Abstract High resolution topography (HRT) surveys is an important tool to model landscapes, especially in zones subjected to strong environmental changes, such as Antarctica, where landform is highly influenced by cryoclasty and permafrost melting. The aim of this work was to obtain a high accurate DTM for Keller Peninsula, Maritime Antarctica. The survey study was assessed in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 during the austral summer, by using Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS). In order to cover 8 km² of the Peninsula, the TLS equipment was installed in 81 different points. Results of the DTM generated by TLS (hereafter, HRT-DTM), and the terrain variables Aspect, Slope and Hillshade obtained were compared with previous models generated by aerophotographic... |

ABSTRACT Thraustochytrids are unicellular protists belonging to the Labyrinthulomycetes class, which are characterized by the presence of a high lipid content that could replace conventional fatty acids. They show a wide geographic distribution, however their diversity in the Antarctic Region is rather scarce. The analysis based on the complete sequence of 18S rRNA gene showed that strain 34-2 belongs to the species Thraustochytrium kinnei, with 99% identity. The total lipid profile shows a wide range of saturated fatty acids with abundance of palmitic acid (16:0), showing a range of 16.1-19.7%. On the other hand, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid are present in a range of 24-48% and 6.1-9.3%,... |

In the course of a journey to Cape Chelyuskin and back, during the late summer of 1933, a party of scientists, led by Professor W. J . Wiese, carried out a number of useful investigations, and were successful in discovering a new island. This expedition was organised by the Arctic Institute for the purpose of making hydrographic and biological investigations in the northern Kara Sea and had hoped to obtain the use of the ice-breaker Taimyr. |

A preliminary account of the Cambridge expedition which was at work during the summer of 1938 in West Spitsbergen , under the leadership of L. H. McCabe, was given in The Polar Record, No. 16. The object of the expedition was to carry out geomorphological work in continuation of W. V. Lewis's investigations in cirque development in Iceland in 1937. Six weeks were spent in the Campbell Range on the east side of Billefjorden, Klaas Billen Bay. One party then visited the Stubendorff Mountains, and another visited Gips Valley, inland from the Campbell Range. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

We examine the past variations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) by using variations in size and abundance of the magnetic grains deposited by this current at a site east the Kerguelen-Crozet plateau. Core MD00-2375G was taken at a midlatitude site during the ANTAUS cruise conducted in 2000 by the French R/V Marion Dufresne. Marine isotope stages (MIS) down to MIS 13 are identified, and an age model is derived from a correlation to the ice core isotopic record obtained from EPICA in Antarctica. Continuous records of abundance and size of the magnetic grains were obtained using environmental magnetism methods. Results show a strong modulation of the ACC flow intensity in response to glacial and interglacial cycles. The low abundance and the small... |

Snow on sea ice alters the properties of the underlying ice cover as well as associated physical and biological processes at the interfaces between atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean. The Antarctic snow cover persists during most of the year and contributes significantly to the sea-ice mass due to the widespread surface flooding and related snow-ice formation. Snow also enhances the sea-ice surface reflectivity of incoming shortwave radiation and determines therefore the amount of light being reflected, absorbed, and transmitted to the upper ocean. Here, we present results of a case study of spectral solar radiation measurements under Antarctic pack ice with an instrumented Remotely Operated Vehicle in the Weddell Sea in 2013. In order to identify the key... |

This expedition was arranged on the initiative of Professor Erik Stensiö of Stockholm to collect fossil specimens for the British Museum (Natural History), the Palaeontologisk Museum, Oslo, and the Hiksmuseum , Stockholm. The chief object was to explore the Old Red Sandstone deposits in the geologically little known Wood Bay area and also in the neighbouring fjords on the north coast. The plans were given in The Polar Record, No. 18, and the final party, which was led by Professor E. A. Steusic with the support of A. Heintz of Oslo, consisted of E. Jarvik (Stockholm), G. Wangsjo (Uppsala), Sven Foyn and K. Aarhus (Oslo), X. Delle (Riga), E. I. White and W. N. Croft (London), J . A. Moy-Thomas (Oxford) and J. Brough (Manchester). C. Andreasen, a sealer from... |

During summer 1994, the production regime at 2 sites located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, one in the Permanent Open Ocean Zone (POOZ) at 52 degrees S, and a second in the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ) at 63 degrees S, was dominated by regeneration (0.3 < f-ratio < 0.4). Two time series, each of about 4 d, were performed over pre-determined time intervals of 4 h using a free-floating sediment trap set at 200 m at the 2 sites. Hourly variations of C, N, chlorophyll a (chl a) and its degradation products, taxon-specific pigments, lipid classes and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were measured simultaneously. Measurements in the water column were done during the sediment trap drifting. Fucoxanthin, a typical diatom pigment, was the major... |

The ice-breaker Malyguin left Archangel on July 6, 1935, to investigate the shipping route from Cape Zhelaniya, the most northerly point of Novaya Zemlya, to Vilkitsky Strait; and from Dickson Island to Vilkitsky Strait. The work was begun off Cape Zhelaniya, whence a section was made to Einsamkeit (Lonely) Island, and two further sections in a blank space on the map to the east. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |
