High-resolution topography for Digital Terrain Model (DTM) in Keller Peninsula, Maritime Antarctica 42
SCHÜNEMANN,ADRIANO L.; ALMEIDA,PEDRO HENRIQUE A.; THOMAZINI,ANDRÉ; FERNANDES FILHO,ELPÍDIO I.; FRANCELINO,MÁRCIO R.; SCHAEFER,CARLOS E.G.R.; PEREIRA,ANTONIO BATISTA.
Abstract High resolution topography (HRT) surveys is an important tool to model landscapes, especially in zones subjected to strong environmental changes, such as Antarctica, where landform is highly influenced by cryoclasty and permafrost melting. The aim of this work was to obtain a high accurate DTM for Keller Peninsula, Maritime Antarctica. The survey study was assessed in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 during the austral summer, by using Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS). In order to cover 8 km² of the Peninsula, the TLS equipment was installed in 81 different points. Results of the DTM generated by TLS (hereafter, HRT-DTM), and the terrain variables Aspect, Slope and Hillshade obtained were compared with previous models generated by aerophotographic...

Characterization of radionuclides in the marine sediments of Orca Seamount, Admiralty Bay, and Mackellar Cove 50
Poma-Llantoy,Víctor Raul; Mendoza-Hidalgo,Pablo Antonio; Ricaurte-Villota,Constanza.
ABSTRACT Contamination by radioactive elements and their transfer through the trophic chain can have harmful effects on ecosystems and human health, therefore its continuous monitoring is important. The present study aimed to characterize the concentration of radionuclides of natural and anthropogenic origin in marine sediments from three areas in the northwest of Antarctica, Orca Seamount, Admiralty Bay and Mackellar Inlet, in order to evaluate possible risk levels, sources and transportation routes. Measurements were made using a high-resolution Canberra spectrometer and methodological precision and accuracy was assessed by analyzing reference materials certified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), SOIL-6 and Moss SOIL-447. The results...

Isolation and molecular characterization of Thraustochytrium strain isolated from Antarctic Peninsula and its biotechnological potential in the production of fatty acids 58
Caamaño,Esteban; Loperena,Lyliam; Hinzpeter,Ivonne; Pradel,Paulina; Gordillo,Felipe; Corsini,Gino; Tello,Mario; Lavín,Paris; González,Alex R..
ABSTRACT Thraustochytrids are unicellular protists belonging to the Labyrinthulomycetes class, which are characterized by the presence of a high lipid content that could replace conventional fatty acids. They show a wide geographic distribution, however their diversity in the Antarctic Region is rather scarce. The analysis based on the complete sequence of 18S rRNA gene showed that strain 34-2 belongs to the species Thraustochytrium kinnei, with 99% identity. The total lipid profile shows a wide range of saturated fatty acids with abundance of palmitic acid (16:0), showing a range of 16.1-19.7%. On the other hand, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid are present in a range of 24-48% and 6.1-9.3%,...

Modeling Distribution and Abundance of Antarctic Baleen Whales Using Ships of Opportunity 7
Williams, Rob; Sea Mammal Research Unit; rmcw@st-andrews.ac.uk; Hedley, Sharon L.; University of St. Andrews; slc@st-andrews.ac.uk; Hammond, Philip S.; University of St. Andrews; psh2@st-andrews.ac.uk.
Information on animal abundance and distribution is at the cornerstone of many wildlife and conservation strategies. However, these data can be difficult and costly to obtain for cetacean species. The expense of sufficient ship time to conduct design-unbiased line transect surveys may be simply out of reach for researchers in many countries, which nonetheless grapple with problems of conservation of endangered species, by-catch of small cetaceans in commercial fisheries, and progression toward ecosystem-based fisheries management. Recently developed spatial modeling techniques show promise for estimating wildlife abundance using non-randomized surveys, but have yet to receive much field-testing in areas where designed surveys have also been conducted....

The Polar Record Number 8 5
In the course of a journey to Cape Chelyuskin and back, during the late summer of 1933, a party of scientists, led by Professor W. J . Wiese, carried out a number of useful investigations, and were successful in discovering a new island. This expedition was organised by the Arctic Institute for the purpose of making hydrographic and biological investigations in the northern Kara Sea and had hoped to obtain the use of the ice-breaker Taimyr.

Can we generate robust species distribution models at the scale of the Southern Ocean? 5
Fabri-ruiz, Salomé; Danis, Bruno; David, Bruno; Saucède, Thomas.
Aim Species distribution modelling (SDM) represents a valuable alternative to predict species distribution over vast and remote areas of the ocean. We tested whether reliable SDMs can be generated for benthic marine organisms at the scale of the Southern Ocean. We aimed at identifying the main large‐scale factors that determine the distribution of the selected species. The robustness of SDMs was tested with regards to sampling effort, species niche width and biogeography. Location Southern Ocean. Methods The impact of sampling effort was tested using two sets of data: one set with all presence‐only data available until 2005, and a second set using all data available until 2015 including recent records from campaigns carried out during the Census of...

The Polar Record Number 17 5
A preliminary account of the Cambridge expedition which was at work during the summer of 1938 in West Spitsbergen , under the leadership of L. H. McCabe, was given in The Polar Record, No. 16. The object of the expedition was to carry out geomorphological work in continuation of W. V. Lewis's investigations in cirque development in Iceland in 1937. Six weeks were spent in the Campbell Range on the east side of Billefjorden, Klaas Billen Bay. One party then visited the Stubendorff Mountains, and another visited Gips Valley, inland from the Campbell Range. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Variations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current intensity during the past 500 ka 5
Mazaud, A.; Michel, Elisabeth; Dewilde, F.; Turon, J. L..
We examine the past variations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) by using variations in size and abundance of the magnetic grains deposited by this current at a site east the Kerguelen-Crozet plateau. Core MD00-2375G was taken at a midlatitude site during the ANTAUS cruise conducted in 2000 by the French R/V Marion Dufresne. Marine isotope stages (MIS) down to MIS 13 are identified, and an age model is derived from a correlation to the ice core isotopic record obtained from EPICA in Antarctica. Continuous records of abundance and size of the magnetic grains were obtained using environmental magnetism methods. Results show a strong modulation of the ACC flow intensity in response to glacial and interglacial cycles. The low abundance and the small...

Influence of snow depth and surface flooding on light transmission through Antarctic pack ice 5
Arndt, Stefanie; Meiners, Klaus M.; Ricker, Robert; Krumpen, Thomas; Katlein, Christian; Nicolaus, Marcel.
Snow on sea ice alters the properties of the underlying ice cover as well as associated physical and biological processes at the interfaces between atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean. The Antarctic snow cover persists during most of the year and contributes significantly to the sea-ice mass due to the widespread surface flooding and related snow-ice formation. Snow also enhances the sea-ice surface reflectivity of incoming shortwave radiation and determines therefore the amount of light being reflected, absorbed, and transmitted to the upper ocean. Here, we present results of a case study of spectral solar radiation measurements under Antarctic pack ice with an instrumented Remotely Operated Vehicle in the Weddell Sea in 2013. In order to identify the key...

Sedimentation pathways in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during a production regime dominated by regeneration 5
Cailliau, C; Belviso, S; Goutx, M; Bedo, A; Park, Y; Charriaud, E.
During summer 1994, the production regime at 2 sites located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, one in the Permanent Open Ocean Zone (POOZ) at 52 degrees S, and a second in the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ) at 63 degrees S, was dominated by regeneration (0.3 < f-ratio < 0.4). Two time series, each of about 4 d, were performed over pre-determined time intervals of 4 h using a free-floating sediment trap set at 200 m at the 2 sites. Hourly variations of C, N, chlorophyll a (chl a) and its degradation products, taxon-specific pigments, lipid classes and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were measured simultaneously. Measurements in the water column were done during the sediment trap drifting. Fucoxanthin, a typical diatom pigment, was the major...
