Use of murinometrics indices and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) in the determination of experimental obesity in oophorectomized rats Biological Sciences
Ferraz, Alex Soares Marreiros; Moraes, Ruan Carlos Macêdo de; Sá, Naiza Arcângela Ribeiro de; Andrade, Francisco Teixeira; Martins, Maria do Carmo de Carvalho e; Ceccatto, Vânia Marilande.
In this study, we tested the use of murinometric indices and bioimpedance (BIA) to determine obesity in rats. Female Wistar rats (8 weeks/130-160 g) were divided into control and oophorectomy group. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and Lee index (LI) were used as anthropometric techniques to determine obesity, and the determination of body composition by BIA, as a way to partition body weight into fat mass and lean mass components. The dissection of muscle tissues and adipose deposits was used as a direct determination of body fat content. The groups had body weight gain (p <0.05) after the trial period, with a differential gain in body fat (p <0.05) observed by the dissection of tissue in the oophorectomy group. This gain in body fat was detected more...

Isometric handgrip strength of agricultural workers from northeast region of India CIGR Journal
Patel, Thaneswer; Sanjog, J; Karmakar, Sougata.
Handgrip strength is considered as one of the most important factors for performing various agricultural tasks related to torqueing, lifting, pulling, pushing, etc. Hand tools and equipment which are designed based on anthropometric/strength data of different population, may not be suitable for any particular targeted user group. As a result work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) at upper extremity may occur very often. Lack of strength data of Assamese population (people of Assam, a state in northeast India), motivated present authors to conduct a survey on isometric handgrip strength data of 200 agricultural workers (130 male and 70 female, aged 17-62 years) from the Kamrup district of the state. Maximal isometric handgrip strength was determined...

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the validity of traditional anthropometric equations and to develop predictive equations of total body and trunk fat for children and adolescents living with HIV based on anthropometric measurements. Forty-eight children and adolescents of both sexes (24 boys) aged 7-17 years, living in Santa Catarina, Brazil, participated in the study. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used as the reference method to evaluate total body and trunk fat. Height, body weight, circumferences and triceps, subscapular, abdominal and calf skinfolds were measured. The traditional equations of Lohman and Slaughter were used to estimate body fat. Multiple regression models were fitted to predict total body fat (Model 1) and trunk fat...

Prevalence of Obesity in a Sample of Schoolchildren from Municipalized Schools in the IX Region of Chile 2008-2009 International Journal of Morphology
Carrasco,Vanessa; Martínez,Cristián; Silva,Héctor; Collipal,Erika; Campos,Christian; Silva,Tamara.
Obesity is a prevalent disease in Chile. The multitude of cause factors makes it a complex disease and therefore very difficult to treat, since its roots lie in the earliest stages of life. We evaluated pupils from 21 municipalized primary schools, in rural and urban communities from the 10 districts of the IX Region. The sample consisted of 275 subjects in Kindergarten and first year primary school in the year 2008, who were monitored over two years. The results show a trend indicating an increase in the prevalence of obesity in the sample, the difference being statistically significant, p=0.000. These results show that obesity is increasing, and that more action is needed to slow this disease occurring from early childhood.

Alves,H. A; Santos,M. I. M. P; Melo,F. C. L; Wellington,R.
Since the beginning of the century in various countries, investigations to determine the anthropometric characteristics of a population were carried out. The issue of miscegenation in Brazil is of great importance in this study to define a population representative data on the cranial anthropometry. The large size of Brazil, with 8.514.876 km2 leads to an investigation between the two extreme regions of the country: North and South, because of the ethnic composition of their colonizers. This study aims to investigate, compare and rank possible differences in cephalic index of the populations from these regions of Brazil. Therefore, an anthropometric study was performed at the School of Aeronautics Expert (single training center for graduates of Brazilian...

COPD in Non-smoking Elderly Men at Sea Level and High Altitude: Comparing Anthropometric Characteristics and Physiological Responses International Journal of Morphology
Moreno,Angel; Espinoza-Navarro,Omar.
The World Health Organization considers cigarette smoke as a major risk factor and causal agent of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, smoke from biomass in poorly ventilated environments may be the major causative agent in developing countries. There is little epidemiological evidence of COPD in relation to the use of biomass fuels and altitude of the place of residence, and there is no record of the morphological and physiological characteristics of patients with COPD living at different altitudes. The objective of this research was to compare a) morphological characteristics: weight, height and body mass index (BMI) and b) physiological responses: spirometric record, heart rate, oxygen saturation and hemoglobin concentration in a...

Regression Equation from Dual Energy X Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) for Estimating Muscle Mass Segment International Journal of Morphology
Rodríguez Rodríguez,Fernando Javier; Almagiá Flores,Atilio Aldo; Berral de la Rosa,Francisco José.
Anthropometric methods used to estimate muscle mass (MM) do not specify values for body segments, a critical fact for individuals practicing physical activities or clinical diagnosis. In this study, 60 recreational athletes are anthropometrically evaluated and also undergo dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression statistics is subsequently used to establish the constants allowing the obtaining of the segment MM. Three equations were obtained, one for the upper members: MMUL = (0.533*FAP) - (0.176*RAP) + (0.42*WP) + (0.282*SRL) - 19,985; a second equation for muscle mass of the lower members: MMLL = (0.186*H) - (0.158*LTTL) - (0.024*LTL) + (0451*LP) 24.535; and the third one for the muscle mass of the trunk TrMM = (0.026*W) + (0.046*H) +...

The rate is assessed as per the body fat percentages (%BF) estimated through anthropometric measurements and manual bioimpedance, according to gender and adiposity rate within the paediatric population. The %BF is assessed by anthropometry using the Slaughter equation for cutaneous skinfolds and manual bioimpedance (Omron model HBF-306INTTM) to 321 students (160 females and 161 males) between 10-18 years. The association degree among the methods was measured using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The consistency among methods was analysed through the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and the consistency correlation coefficient of Lin (CCC), grouping the population by gender and adiposity rate. The reference method was the cutaneous...
