The Cucurbitaceae plants are damaged by attack of a wide spectrum of insects and microorganisms. Among the sucker insects causing damages on squash Cucurbita pepo (L.), the aphid Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is pointed as one of the most important, once their nymphs and adults suck the sap of the leaves continuously, besides being potential vector of virus. The present research evaluated different cultivars, aiming to identify the resistance against this aphid. The cultivars Novita, Sandy, Caserta Cac Melhorada, Novita Plus, Samira, AF-2858 and Caserta TS were used in laboratory assays (T= 25±2ºC; RH= 70±10% and fotophase= 12 h). In the immature phase the duration of nymphal instars was evaluated, the total duration and their viability,... |

Firm matching of genitals during copulation is of critical importance to effective insemination and thus, gene flow. During the evolution of insects, an effective position during copulation promoted higher fecundity through control over the act of mating or elimination of competitors. Usually during insect copulation, either twisting or flexing of the male abdomen occurs, and genitals remain symmetrically or asymmetrically disposed following changes in the mating position. However, it is always the dorsal side of the male genitalia that makes contact with the ventral side of female abdomen. Here we present the unusual case of a ‘belly-to-belly’ copulation, with symmetrically positioned male genitals and no twisting of the abdomen. During the mating of two... |

Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) is a polyphagous Asian species, well-known as a classical biological control agent of aphids around the world, introduced probably accidentally in Brazil, sampled for the first time in 2002. It is an important intraguild predator, competing for food with native coccinellids. It was studied H. axyridis alimentary sources and host plants, its abundance compared with native and established species, the influence of abiotic factors and the seasons over the abundance of H. axyridis throughout one year, and discussed the mechanisms which influence the displacement of species. Harmonia axyridis was found in 38 plant species, among them 20 were new records, feeding on 20 aphid species, eight of them new... |

O acefate Pellet 970, vamidotion CE 300, monocrotofós CE 400,... |

This paper reports the first record of a bamboo aphid Takecallis arundinariae (Essig, 1917) on bamboo plants in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Specimens were also collected in yellow pan traps from June-August (fall-winter), and a few specimens from October-December (late spring-early summer). Individuals were found feeding on the underside of leaves, parallel to the veins on Dendroclamus sp. and Merostachys sp. (Bambusoideae). Individuals collected were represented mainly by alate viviparous females bearing a characteristic clypeus with an anterior tubercle. A brief diagnosis and morphometric data are presented to distinguish T. arundinariae from Takecallis taiwanus (Takahashi, 1926), another bamboo aphid recorded recently in Brazil. T. arundinariae is a... |

Seventeen clones of Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus, 1758), 14 of R. maidis (Fitch, 1856), and two of R. insertum (Walker, 1849), representing a wide range of host plants and geographic distribution, were examined electrophoretically to determine intra and interspecific variation. Twenty-one enzyme systems were tested using starch-gel techniques. The electromorph variation within species was low, as expected for parthenogenetic organisms. Frequency of heterozygotes was also relatively low for most populations. The percentage of polymorphic loci ranged from 0% to 27.3% in R. padi, but it was lower (0% to 18.2%) in the completely an holocyclic R. maidis. No consistent correlation between band patterns and host plant or geographic origin could be established for... |
