The feeding trial of C. gariepinus using three silage based diets and one fish meal based diet was carried out in concrete tanks. The four experimental diets were fed to C. gariepinus fry of relatively the same size. At the end of 8 weeks feeding trial the fish increased from their initial body weight of 0.2g, 0.4g, 0.4g and 0.4g to average final weights of 21.2g 15.4g, 12.8g and 13.8g respectively. The diet containing 41.1% resulted in the least food conversion efficiency of 1.2 over the eight weeks period. Of the experimental treatments the diets containing the highest level of fish silage (41.0%) performed better than any of the other two treatments of 19.0% and 33.5% fish silage contents. The nutritional effects of the complete or partial replacement of fishmeal by Soyabean meal in the diets of catfish were investigated. Four diets A, B, C, and D in which 34% of fish meal was replaced weight by weight with 0%, 10%, 20% and 34% of Soya-bean meal respectively were fed to four groups of brackish water catfish for six weeks. Results showed that although the digestibilities of proteins were almost equal in all the four groups, the groups fed diet D in which 100% of the fishmeal had been replaced by Soyabean had the least growth as compared to A, B and C. Chemical composition of Clarias gariepinus collected from the wild was investigated. The moisture level ranged from 72.2% to 75.7% while the crude protein level was 18.9% to 19.7%.with the mean of 19.3%. The lipid content ranged from 1.04% to 1.32% (wet weight) while ash was 3.05% to 3.7%. The size of the fish did not significantly (p<0.05) affect the proximate composition. The amino acid pattern of different sizes of C. gariepins were similar with lysine level of 7.5 to 8.0g/16gN,and methionine level of 1.56 to 3.08g/16gN. PUFA of C. gariepinus ranged from 6.5to 7.8%. |

Fish samples were collected from Lekki and Badagry lagoon and the Institute’s experimental fish farm, Lagos, from February 1983 to September 1984. Three thousand seven hundred and eighty six brooders and fingerlings rAnging between 3.5cm and 50.2cm in total length and weighing between 2.56g and 976,0g were examined. External parasites observed on Saratherodon galilaeus included monogenean trematodes, Gyrodactylus spp and Dactylogyrus spp; copepod, Argulus spp, and annelid (Piscilid) leeches on the body surface and gills. Macrobrachium vollenhovenii and Macrobrachion, the two largest Macrobrachium species in Nigeria waters attain maximum adult sizes of 19cm and 13.5cm respectively. Male - female ration is approximately 1.1 for both species. Male dimorphism has been observed in M. macrobrachion but not in M. vollenhovenii. Both prawns breed throughout the year (usually in the brackish waters) with peaks in the rainy season. Actual and potential acid sulfate soils cover over 750,000 ha. of unclassified wetlands in the mangrove swamp of the Niger Delta. This belt serves many functions including aquaculture development. Presently a number of brackish water aquaculture projects are sited on these soils. In acid sulfate soils, an acidic condition usually develops due to oxidation of the sulfidic materials (e.g. Iron Sulfides) in the soils. The effect of season on the controlled propagation of C. gariepinus was investigated. The hypophysation of C. gariepinus using the pituitary extract from the sacrificed C. gariepinus was carried out from July, 1987 to June 1988. The female broodstock weight ranged from 0.50kg while the male weight, from 0.5kg to 0.6kg. The condition factor of the female broodfish was more or less uniform (1.3 to 1.7). The results showed that there was peak production of eggs by the female during the rainy season. Eggs production for rainy season ranged from 28,000 eggs/kg body weight in June to 37,600 eggs/kg body weight in August. Four groups of brackish water catfish were fed four diets: N. F. (NIOMR formula 1 feed). A. B. and C. for seven weeks. Feeds N.F., A., B. and C. contained 1.21% fish oil + 5.59% vegetable oil; 1.21% fish oil + 7.39% vegetable oil; 1.21% fish oil + 9.09% vegetable oil; 1.21% fish oil +10.89% vegetable oil respectively. The total amounts of vegetable oil in A., B. and C. included the supplementation of the residual oil in the ingredients with 2%, 4% and 6% respectively with ordinary cooking mixed vegetable oil.
