Prophylactic strategies and zootechnic measures, recent advances 5
Grizel, Henri.
The spread of major diseases of molluscs around the world and the increase of transfers need the development of adapted prophylactic strategies and the increase of research in epidemiology, immunology and genetics. The prophylactic strategies must be based on common laws with the establishment of a list of declarable pathogens, with basic sampling rules (sample size, frequency, definition of geographical areas) and with reglementation of the internal transfers. Moreover, specific adapted diagnosis should be developed to increase the sanitary control performance (e.g. ELISA test, DNA probe, cell culture). In the case of an infectious disease the epidemiology studies should be concerned, the relationship between the culture techniques and the disease, the...

Morizur, Yvon.
The recent developments in collecting techniques for spat of Chlamys operoularis and Chlamys varia make it necessary to find criteria for separating these two species at early life stages. Biométrie criteria for differenciating between species have been found to be usable on individuals of a height superior to 3 mm. A quick différenciation of smaller individuals is possible by observation, under light microscope, of the périostracum external morphology on left valves.

Effects of age and environment on the summer mortality in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas during the first two years 5
Degremont, Lionel; Boudry, Pierre; Soletchnik, Patrick; Bedier, Edouard; Ropert, Michel; Samain, Jean-francois.
Three successive generations were produced between 2001 and 2003 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for survival in juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas. For each generation, two groups were selected for their high ("R" for resistant) and low ("S" for susceptible) survival. Significant differences in mortality were observed during the first year in Riviere d'Auray (RA) (Brittany-France). However, low and similar mortality were observed for both groups, with no significant difference between groups in the first and second generation in this site, where the first summer is the critical, sensitive period with a clear age effect. In Baie des Veys (BDV) (Normandie-France), where mortalities usually mainly affect adults, mortality between groups,...

Priour, Daniel.
The quick evolution of fish farming in Europe, and its development towards the open sea needs suitable farming tools. These tools must withstand the difficult sea states, but they must be easy to use, well adapted to the fish farming and not too much expensive. This book helps the design of such tools. It defines the solicitations of the sea on all the structures, and presents rules and methods to control these solicitations. Here, a structure is composed of a rearing support, a mooring system and equipments. This book describes these components, class them and gives lists of providers. The rearing support can be a cage, a group of cages or a boat. The support can float or to be submersible. The mooring system can be made up ropes, chains, anchors,...

Larval rearing techniques and stock enhancement of silver seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba) in Mauritius 20
Baccus, H.; Ramsaha, S.; Rathacharen, S.; Hassea, R.; Auliar, I.; Codabaccus, B..
The silver sea bream (Rhabdosargus sarba), has great commercial value in Mauritius. The species is a potential candidate for aquaculture. The sea bream, a winter spawner, was successfully induced to breed in captivity with HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) hormone injection (250 IU/kg body weight) in 1989 at the Albion Fisheries Research Centre. In 1997, the Coastal Fisheries Resources and Environment Conservation Project of Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was launched to enhance the stock of the silver sea bream in the lagoon. This species breeds under hatchery conditions during the spawning season. Annually, the hatchery-produced sea bream fingerlings, of 2.0 to 2.5 cm body length, were released in the coastal areas. The larval rearing...

Effect of season on controlled propagation of the African catfish, clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822). 20
Ayinla, O.A.; Nwadukwe, F.O..
The effect of season on the controlled propagation of C. gariepinus was investigated. The hypophysation of C. gariepinus using the pituitary extract from the sacrificed C. gariepinus was carried out from July, 1987 to June 1988. The female broodstock weight ranged from 0.50kg while the male weight, from 0.5kg to 0.6kg. The condition factor of the female broodfish was more or less uniform (1.3 to 1.7). The results showed that there was peak production of eggs by the female during the rainy season. Eggs production for rainy season ranged from 28,000 eggs/kg body weight in June to 37,600 eggs/kg body weight in August. The percentage hatching of the fertilized eggs was also higher in the rainy season than the dry season. The highest hatching of the...

Experimental studies on acclimatization of marine shrimps, Penaeus monodon and Metapenaeus monoceros to freshwater 20
Rathacharen, S.; Laxminarayana, A.; Venkatasami, O.; Codabaccus, B..
The adult shrimps, Penaeus monodon and Metapenaeus monoceros were induced to mature and spawn by eyestalk ablation. The larvae of both the species of shrimps were reared up to post larval stage on a diet of the phytoplankton, Chaetoceros calcitrans. The post larvae of M. monoceros were fed with artificial feeds only, whereas the post larvae of P. monodon were fed on small quantities of Artemia sp. in addition to artificial feed. After post larval stage, PL-20, the post-larvae were acclimatized to freshwater. Acclimatization was tried for different periods ranging between 2 and 20 days. The best survival rate was obtained for an acclimatization period of 5 days. Results obtained so far showed that the growth of P. monodon was significantly higher in...

Ksouri, J.; Mensi, F.; Ben Said, R..

Ksouri, J.; Challougui, I.; Mensi, F..

Variation in egg and larval quality in various fish and crustacean species 27
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
It is generally accepted, that a major constraint in the further development of marine fish and crustacean aquaculture, is the variable quality of eggs and larvae used for the hatchery-production of fry. Nonetheless, valid criteria to evaluate optimal egg quality have not been identified yet. Instead, particular indicators, are used, e.g. the fertilization and hatching rate, overall culture success during the first rearing period, etc., but these are not totally objective because hatchery-specific conditions may interfere. The biochemical composition of the egg may be one of the possible determinants of egg quality, which can be evaluated on a more objectie basis. In this respect, studied have been initiated to analyze in freshly-released eggs, the levels...

The use of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in aquaculture: the concept of "hatching efficiency" and description of a new method for cyst processing 27
Sorgeloos, P.; Persoone, G.; Baeza-Mesa, M.; Bossuyt, E.; Bruggeman, E..
The quality of brands of <i>Artemia</i> cysts should be expressed on a weight basis, namely the number of live nauplii hatching out per unit of weight of product and not as a "hatching percentage" since the latter concept does not take into account the degree of impurity of the material. A standardized method for the determination of the hatching efficiency is proposed. A new methodology for cyst processing has been worked out at laboratory scale, based on a 2-step cleaning (brine and tap water) followed by dehydration (air or brine) or decapsulation and dehydration (brine).

Selection of bacteria enhancing the growth rate of axenically hatched rotifers (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) 27
Rombaut, G.; Dhert, P.; Vandenberghe, J.; Verschuere, L.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
The effect of bacterial strains on the growth rate of rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis, was determined under monoxenic conditions. The first objective was to obtain sterile rotifer cultures starting from rotifer resting eggs using merthiolate or glutaraldehyde as disinfectant. Sterile rotifer cultures were obtained, without affecting the hatching ability of the resting eggs, when 0.05 µl/l glutaraldehyde was used. This disinfection procedure was used to examine the effect of 20 bacterial strains, isolated from well-performing live-feed production systems, on the population growth rate of rotifers cultured under monoxenic conditions. Five out of the 20 bacterial strains tested were able to improve significantly the asexual reproduction of rotifers. The...

The flow-through column: a simple and multipurpose rearing device 27
Mertens, J.; Persoone, G..
A simple flow-through system for culturing or colonization purpose is described. It consists of piled up petri-dishes placed on top of a water reservoir with an air-water lifting tube. Each of the seperately removable units is composed of the bottom of a petri-dish glued on top of the lid of another one. A short piece of plastic tubing, fitting tightly into an exentrically drilled hole in the bottom part of the unit, permits a continuous flow of water through the whole column.

Rearing techniques for difficult marine fish larvae 27
Dhert, Ph.; Divanach, P.; Kentouri, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
In finfish mariculture, seed production and larval rearing still form the bottleneck for all ongrowing operations and are considered as the main limiting factor for industrial development. Through trial and error more than through biological understanding two opposite hatchery techniques have been developed which surprisingly control a multiparametric combination of different factors but aspire to the same objective of conformity with wild standards and the cost-effective production of larvae. In intensive aquaculture, the rearing technique is characterised by high initial larval densities in small tanks under strict hydraulic, thermic, and nutritional conditions. The light conditions are artificial. The temperature and quality of water are controlled. The...

Onshore nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Belgium 27
Claus, C.; Maeckelberghe, H.; De Pauw, N..
From October to April the growth of spat of <i>Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas</i> and <i>Venerupis semidecussata</i> in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level. The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability.

Controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> cysts under standard conditions in a recirculating culture system 27
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A flow-through culture system is described for the controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in 10 liter aquaria using 50 promille artificial seawater enriched with Fe-EDTA as culture medium, micronised rice bran as food source and cyclic flushes of the cultures with N2-gas as induction mechanism for oviparity. The culture water is recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a settling tank and a UV disinfection unit. Cysts are continuously harvested by filtration of the culture effluent. Production yields average 0.5 g dry cysts per day and per aquarium.

Perspectives in maricultural technologies 27
Persoone, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
Starting with the major issues of the recent World Conference on Aquaculture, organized in 1981 jointly by the European Mariculture Society and the World Mariculture Society, the paper indicates a number of new and appealing maricultural technologies in shellfish and fish farming. It is postulated that several of the techniques described will have a far-reaching impact on maricultural production in the next decade. Special attention is given to the potential of the mass production of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> in extensive and intensive operations, and in particular to its key role in vertically integrated aquaculture.
