Effect of LCORL gene polymorphism on body size traits in horse populations Animal Sciences
Mostafavi, Ali; Fozi, Masoud Asadi; Koshkooieh, Ali Esmailizadeh; Mohammadabadi, Mohammadreza; Babenko, Olena Ivanivna; Klopenko, Nataliia Ihorivna.
The aim of this study was to determine polymorphism of LCORL gene in horse breeds and its association with body size. PCR-RFLP technique was performed using AluI for genotyping of 306 horses. Results showed that C is the rare allele in Iranian Breeds, because these horses have been used since ancient times as a courier and for war and archery, hence selection has done to benefit of spiky horses with medium body that need less food and are tireless. While, for foreign breeds; frequency of C allele was high that can be concluded these breeds used in fields, forests, and mines. A UPGMA dendrogram based on the Nei's standard genetic distance among studied breeds showed separate clusters for Iranian native and exotic breeds. Statistical association analysis of...

First report of Simuliidae and Chironomidae (Diptera) living on nymphs of Lachlania Hagen (Ephemeroptera: Oligoneuriidae) in South America Biota Neotropica
Pepinelli,Mateus; Siqueira,Tadeu; Salles,Frederico Falcão; Shimbori,Eduardo Mitio.
We report cases of Simuliidae and Chironomidae living on Lachlania nymphs (Ephemeroptera). This is the first record of these associations in South America. Simulium exiguum (pupae and larvae), Simulium cuasiexiguum (larvae), Cricotopus sp. (larva) and Rheotanytarsus sp. (larva) were found associated with Lachlania nymphs. We believe that all of these associations can be classified as opportunistic (or casual) attachment.

Relationship between VRTN gene polymorphism and growth, slaughter and meat quality traits in three polish pig breeds Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Polasik,Daniel; Tyra,Mirosław; Szyndler-Nędza,Magdalena; Korpal,Agnieszka; Woźniak-Męch,Katarzyna; Terman,Arkadiusz.
ABSTRACT Earlier studies have shown that insertion/deletion polymorphism (g.20311_20312ins291) in vertnin (VRTN) gene is associated with number of vertebrate in pigs. Because vertebral number determines the size of important meat cuts and influences carcass conformation, the aim of this study was to estimate the relationship between VRTN gene polymorphism and growth, slaughter and pork quality traits including texture parameters. Investigations were carried out on 526 pigs represented three breeds: Polish Landrace, Polish Large White and Puławska. VRTN gene polymorphism was determined by PCR methodology. Association study was performed for each breed separately. It was demonstrated that the analyzed polymorphism had significant influence on several...

Long-term macrofaunal studies in a subtidal habitat off Norderney (East Frisia, Germany) from 1978 to 1994 .1. The late winter samples ArchiMer
Zeiss, B; Kroncke, I.
Macrofaunal samples were collected regularly during springtime from 1978 to 1994 in the subtidal zone off Norderney, one of the East Frisian barrier islands. Sampling was carried out from a research vessel by means of a 0.2 m(2) van-Veen grab at five sites with water depths of 10-20 m. Abundances, biomasses and species composition were analysed by cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. The resulting patterns are discussed in terms of anthropogenic impact and varying meteorological conditions. Species survival is severely impaired by cold winters, whereas storms and hot summers have a minor impact. There is evidence that mild meteorological conditions and eutrophication have resulted in an increase in total biomass since 1989. In addition to...

Fish aggregation device (FAD) research: gaps in current knowledge and future directions for ecological studies ArchiMer
Dempster, Tim; Taquet, Marc.
We reviewed the literature concerning fish aggregation devices (FADs) to determine areas of relative research deficiency. Using specific searches of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts ( ASFA) database from 1978 to December 2003 and a classical search of the pre-1978 literature, we collected 407 references on FADs. Publications before 1980 were predominantly peer-reviewed, although non-peer reviewed literature has dominated since 1980, due to the numerous technical reports produced as FADs became more widely used in artisinal and large-scale industrial. sheries in the 1980s. Most studies of the ecology of FAD-associated fish were descriptive, with few mensurative experimental studies and even fewer manipulative experimental studies that tested...

Association Between Tongue Rolling and Tongue Folding in Osogbo, Southwestern Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Igbeneghu,Christopher; Olukanni,Folake; Olisekodiaka,Japhet; Adesina,Adekunle.
This study was carried out among 144 individuals (18 years) from the Yoruba tribe of Southwestern Nigeria in order to determine the association between tongue rolling and folding. Participants were examined for the ability to roll and/or fold their tongues. The incidence of tongue rollers and folders were 59.7 % and 79.2 % respectively. Tongue rolling was higher in females than male but the difference was not significant (X2= 1.039, df = 1, p= 0.308). Tongue folding was significantly higher in females than males (X2= 4.211, df= 1, p= 0.04). Of the 144 participants, 76 (52.8 %) were tongue rollers and folders, 10 (6.9 %) were rollers and non-folders, 38 (26.4 %) were non-rollers and folders and 20 (13.9 %) were non-rollers and non-folders. Prevalences of Simian, Sydney and Suwon Creases and their Association with Each Other, Body Sides, Handedness, Sex and Anomalies/Diseases/Syndromes in a Population of Central India International Journal of Morphology
Sharma,D. K; Sharma,Vandana.
The Simian and Sydney creases are variant palmar creases which have now drawn medical attention as their presence correlates strongly with numerous chromosomal anomalies and diseases. Works on these creases have been done on several human communities, racial and ethnic but no specific study is focussed out on the Indian populations. In this study 1000 Central Indian subjects (500 males and 500 females) aged between 5 to 70 years were randomly selected and examined by the authors. We found the prevalence of Simian, Sydney and Suwon creases in studied population of Central India is 14.4%, 3.6% and 2.4% respectively, which is a little higher than the figures for Asians and Caucasians claimed by earlier studies. There is no any association between these...

Relationship Between Morphological Characteristics and Match Performance in Junior Soccer Players International Journal of Morphology
Sporis,Goran; Dujic,Ivan; Trajkovic,Nebojsa; Milanovic,Zoran; Madic,Dejan.
Soccer players are usually selected based on their anthropometry characteristics rather than their performances. Therefore, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between morphological and match performances among junior soccer players. Thirty seven junior soccer players were randomly selected using as stratification criteria age and playing role. Skinfolds (mm) were measured at six sites: triceps skinfold thickness, subscapular skinfold thickness, thigh skinfold thickness, calf skinfold thickness, supraspinal skinfold thickness and abdominal skinfold thickness. In addition, total distance covered during the match, as well as the distance traveled by walking, jogging, moderate and high intensity running and sprinting was...

Platypodiella georgei spec. nov. (Brachyura: Xanthidae), a new crab from the island of St. Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, with notes on the genus Platypodiella Guinot, 1967 Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Türkay, M..
A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data...

A case of associated occurrence of the crab Lauridromia inter-media (Laurie, 1906) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Dromiidae) and the actinian Nemanthus annamensis Carlgren, 1943 (Anthozoa: Actiniaria: Nemanthidae) Naturalis
Lavaleye, M.S.S.; Hartog, J.C. den.
Members of the crab family Dromiidae tend to cover their carapace mostly with sponges or colonial tunicates. More rarely are used other objects or organisms such as solitary Tunicata, Zoantharia (= encrusting anemones), valves of Bivalvia, etc.; a review of these is presented. A new association of a dromiid crab Lauridromia intermedia (Laurie, 1906) and an actinian Nemanthus annamensis Carlgren, 1943, is described and discussed. Lauridromia intermedia is recorded for the first time from the continental shelf of East Africa.

Cantellius cardenae spec. nov. (Cirripedia: Pyrgomatinae) from Acropora (Isopora) brueggemanni (Brook, 1893) (Anthozoa: Acroporidae), a case of host specificity in a generalist genus Naturalis
Achituv, Y.; Hoeksema, B.W..
A new species of coral inhabiting barnacle Cantellius cardenae spec. nov. (Crustacea, Cirripedia: Pyrgomatinae) is described. This barnacle was found on the staghorn coral Acropora (Isopora) brueggemanni (Scleractinia: Acroporidae). It is characterized by having transversally elongated scuta and narrow terga with a spur length more than half of the total tergal length. This species belongs to the secundus group of Cantellius, which includes barnacles with transversally elongated scuta, and which are limited to the Acroporidae. The distribution of C. cardenae supports the hypothesis that structurally specialized pyrgomatines occupy a more limited variety of hosts than do morphologicaly generalized ones.

Zamberlan, Carlos Otavio; Castagna, Gilfredo; Schuch Junior, Vitor Francisco.
The objective of this work is to verify the interest, among the farmers from the fruit and vegetable production units of the 4th Colony micro region in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in participating in associations or cooperatives, which would allow them to participate in the increasingly competitive markets. A structured questionnaire, built in Likert scale, was applied through interviews to all the producers of the districts that best represented the socioeconomic and environmental conditions of the studied micro region. The data were treated with factorial analysis, descriptive statistics and rank tests. A pre-disposition to create company associations was observed among most of the producers; nevertheless, some important elements (for instance...
