Evaluation du stock de palourdes du bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer

As part of a larger project financed by the European Union programme "Community initiative PESCA" on the study of "small scale fisheries" in Aquitaine (France), an estimation of the stock of clams in the Bassin d'Arcachon has been conducted. A two-stage stratified random sampling survey has been designed. Samples have been collected using a Hamon bottom sampler in 237 locations distributed over 24 km2. The clam Tapes philippinarum, which appeared in the basin following a series of aquaculture experiments in the mid eighties, is now the main species accounting for more than 90% of the abundance and the biomass, largely overcoming the European species Tapes decussata. From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum) culture and sediment interactions were tested by comparing two rearing areas, including an oceanic ('Le-Ferret') and a more estuarine ('Les-Jacquets') sites in the bay of Arcachon (France). The growth of a calibrated clam population (10-mm spat) was monitored in these two areas with a concomitant sediment-water interface survey over a 1.5-year period. Two sites per area, including control and rearing plots, were sampled on a monthly basis. After a quick presentation of the observation national network of the marine environment quality (RNO), the different metallic and organic Micropollutants measured in four stations of the Bay of Arcachon are described (origin, eventual toxicity). The results of the contamination measurements in the living tissue (oysters) are presented on graphics, based on a sample every three months from 1979 ta 1994, and means are compared to those obtained during the same period on the others points of the Manche-Atlantique coast.

Caractéristiques des mortalités estivales de l'huître Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer

Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. Monthly sampling for a 2-year period allowed comparisons between the communities of meiofauna living in fish ponds ("reservoirs a poissons de Certes") and those inhabiting a contiguous tidal pool ("lac de tonne"). Nematods and copepods constitute the bulk of the meiofaunal populations. The community structure of co­pepods is considered in detail.The communities of copepods are clearly separated between the two areas. In terms of abundance, diversity and species persistence, the meiofauna is more stable in the intertidal pool than in the fish ponds. La contamination des coquillages fouisseurs du bassin d'Arcachon : conséquences sur l'exploitation des gisements ArchiMer

La spécificité du mode d'alimentation des coquillages fouisseurs présentera toujours un facteur de risques important pour leur qualité bactériologique car ils filtrent les particules présentes sur le sédiment superficiel fortement contaminé. Sur le Bassin d'Arcachon, 300 tonnes de coques et 120 tonnes de palourdes sont pêchées au banc d'Arguin et sur les vasières internes du nord-est de la baie. Leur taux de contamination varie de façon importante selon les sites et les périodes de l'année. Si le secteur central du bassin (île aux oiseaux) semble indemne de pollution, la majorité des zones de pêche peut être ponctuellement contaminée. Coordinated ECOTRON Program on the Arcachon Basin (Aquitaine, France) : Control of marine biological production in a man-modified lagoon ecosystem (fish ponds). Results, synthesis and prospects. The "fish reservoirs" of the Arcachon Basin consist of eutrophic lagoon ecosys­tems, empirically exploited for extensive amphihaline fish culture (grey mullets, sea bass, eels, sea breams). Croissance et mortalite du petoncle noir Chlamys varia dans le bassin d'Arcachon, France ArchiMer

Until 1960, the Black scallop Chlamys varia was relatively abundant along the French Atlantic coasts. Today most of these natural beds have disappeared. Because mollusc hatchery and nursery techniques have been mastered, the reintroduction of this species, under control, was carried out in several areas and particularly in the bay of Arcachon, from 1989 to 1992. Good results were obtained in hatchery and nursery but the development of the juveniles in the natural fields was poor. The growth of Chlamys varia was satisfactory but heavy mortalities were rapidly recorded which could not be related to the hydrobiological conditions. This species seems to be very sensitive to short emersion and removal operations which are incompatible with aquaculture processes.

The Bay of Arcachon has been particularly affected by the impact of organotin-based antifouling paints (His, 1996). Boring gastropods, Ocenebra erinacea, have completely disappeared from the Bay, because of the castration induced by these compounds, from 1980 to 1990. There have been no studies on imposex effects in the Bay of Arcachon since the investigations of Poli (1972) who first described the phenomenon, and of Féral (1982) who attributed it to TBT. "Il est impossible d'imaginer un lieu plus favorable à l'ostréiculture que le bassin d'Arcachon" (Yonge, 1950). En effet, l'huître indigène, Ostrea edulis, et l'espèce plus récemment introduite, Crassostrea gigas, peuvent s'y reproduire en abondant. Si l'exploitation de la première a pris fin à la suite de deux épizooties consécutives, la seconde est l'objet d'une culture intensive dont la production annuelle est d'environ 12 000 tonnes de mollusques commercialisés. Des anomalies ont sévi dans la baie, de 1977 à 1981, rendant les récoltes de naissain pratiquement sensibles aux facteurs d'agression, et ont même été proposées par Woelke (1967) comme matériel biologique, afin de tester la qualité des eaux en zone littorale. En 2009, La caractérisation du niveau de ploïdie des naissains captés en 2008 dans les deux principaux bassins de captage que sont Marennes Oléron et Arcachon a été réalisée dans le cadre du réseau biovigilance. Les échantillons des naissains sauvages issus de ce captage naturel ont été prélevés sur 3 sites dans chaque bassin et pour un total analysé de 1121 animaux. En tenant compte de notre échantillonnage, nos résultats de suivi de ploïdie concluent à l’absence d’animaux polyploïdes, triploïdes ou tétraploïdes, captés dans les deux bassins prospectés. Après avoir rapidement présenté le Bassin d'Arcachon et son environnement (situation géographique et réseau hydrologique), et rappelé quelques données sur l'ostréiculture, le tourisme et le réseau d'assainissement, le réseau de surveillance microbiologique (REMI) est décrit depuis sa mise en place en 1989 (réseau principal) jusqu'à son évolution en 1995 avec la mise en oeuvre d'un réseau étendu. Farming of the Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum took place for the first time in 1980 in the Arcachon basin. After an experimentation period of about ten years, a farming strategy, taking into consideration the distinctive features found in the bay, was able to emerge. For example, in order to fight against clam predators, crabs such as Carcinus maenas, and balistes such as Balistes capriscus, vertical protection coupled with prior ground gravelling, and laying of nets over the beds during the summer months, have become necessary. The best raising technique seems to rest on early spring planting of middle size spats (T5), after checking that no brown rings are visible. Grâce au réseau de surveillance du phytoplancton  (REPHY) mis en place en 1984, une importante banque de données s'est constituée. L'étude quantitative et qualitative de la flore observée de 1987 à 1990 dans le bassin d'Arcachon permet de montrer les variations suivantes. En ce qui concerne le phytoplancton, Ces quatre années de sécheresse sont dans l'ensemble pauvres et peu contrastées mais montrent tout de même des schémas saisonniers similaires à ceux décrits par les précédents auteurs. Une alternance est observée avec 1987 et 1989 plus pauvres que 1988 et 1990. 1987 et 1989 sont aussi marquées par une sécheresse plus importante et par conséquent de fortes salinités et de faibles apports en sels azotés. Copper levels evolution in Arcachon bay oysters : role of the regulation on antifouling paints ArchiMer

The ban of tributyltin compounds in antifouling paints induced a strong decrease in the level of tin in Arcachon bay. At the same time, copper inputs have increased tenfold since 1982 owing to the widespread use of paints containing cuprous oxide. In spite of this large input, the statistical analysis of monitoring data (1979-1985) show a relative stability in the copper levels in Arcachon bay oysters.

Afin d ' améliorer la précision des résultats et depuis 1986, quelques modifications ont été apportées à la stratégie d'échantillonnage qui avait été adoptée en 1985 : - prise en compte de la structure en âge de l a population, en différenciant les huîtres âgées de 1 an de celles d'âge supérieur, - traitement séparé des poches et des collecteurs pour l'élevage en sur élevé . Au cours des trois années , le stock d'huîtres en élevage est resté relativement stable : 1985 37 996 t ± 1 970 t précision 5,1% 1986 37 835 t ± 4 196 t précision 11,1% 1987 39 079 t i 3 350 t précision 8,6% avec environ 80% représenté par la culture à plat.
