The study aims to develop a test platform (TP) compartment that could mimic diurnal variations in indoor climate and NH3 emission in a real pig compartment and to compare diurnal indoor climate and NH3 production between two TP compartments and a real compartment. The objectives were achieved by using a real and TP compartment followed by an ad hoc test that used two TP compartments and another real compartment. The TP had two compartments equipped with mock-up pigs as heat source and automatic urea solution spraying installation to mimic pig urination at the pen floor. The study evaluated indoor climate and NH3 production in a 4-day comparative test between a TP and a real compartment followed by a 3-day comparative test between two TP compartments and a... |

The Middle Eifelian trilobite fauna of the Belgian Ardennes shows close affinities with that of the German Eifel. Two trilobite taxa are recorded from Middle Eifelian strata near the town of Jemelle, on the southern border of the Dinant Synclinorium, Belgium. Kettneraspis bayarti sp. nov. is closely related to Kettneraspis elliptica (Burmeister) from the Middle Eifelian of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Ceratarges cf. armatus (Goldfuss) is also described on the basis of a single pygidium. The odontopleurid Charybdaspis Basse is considered a junior subjective synonym of Radiaspis Richter & Richter. The lichid Rhenarges Basse is briefly discussed and regarded as a junior subjective synonym of Akantharges Phleger. |

Trends in dragonfly occurrence in Belgium (Odonata) The group ‘Gomphus’ collected 65 000 records of 69 species of Odonata, more or less equally scattered over Belgium. The best-investigated areas are the northern part and some river valleys in the south. Most hot spots can be found in the northeastern part, with a maximum of 48 species for 25 km². Remarkable is the fact that 50% of the species occurs in less than 7% of the 5 km grid cells (UTM). We determined trends in occurrence by comparing three periods: before 1950, 1950-1989 and 1990-2000. Four species show a clear decline over the three periods, eight species give evidence of a historical decline but survive on a limited number of sites and eight species also display a historical decline but have... |

Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, 1905 is for the first time reported from Europe: the Netherlands, Belgium, and adjacent Germany. DNA barcodes confirm its identity. It is the first North American lepidopteranspecies feeding on northern red oak Quercus rubra ever found in Europe, and only the second North American oak-feeding insect found in Europe. The species has regularly been found in the Netherlands and northern Belgium since 2006, and in 2011 also in Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, adjacent to the Dutch border, but the earliest records are from the Netherlands, Amersfoort in 1989 and 1990. Early stages, leafmines, and the adult are described, illustrated, and diagnosed against oak-feeding Bucculatrix ulmella Zeller, 1848 and other similar species.... |

The European species of the subgenus Aliolus Say, 1836, of the genus Eubazus Nees, 1814, and of the genus Dicyrtaspis van Achterberg, 1980 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Brachistinae) are reviewed. The identity of Triaspis thomsoni Fahringer, 1934, and the interpretation by S˘ noflák (1953) are discussed. A lectotype is designated for T. thomsoni, a neotype for the types species of Aliolus Say, 1836 (Bracon trilobatus Say, 1836) and T. thomsoni sensu Šnoflák is described as a new species (Eubazus nigroventralis spec. nov.) from Bulgaria, Germany and Czech Republic. Two new species of the E. lepidus-group are described and illustrated (E. punctifer cpec. nov. from Bulgaria and E. planifacialis spec. nov. from The Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden). In addition, a... |

The Sluice-dock of Ostend, a shallow (1.5 m) marine biotope of 86 ha stays closed during some 6-7 months of the year and is not influenced by the tides. During 24 h cycles the nycthemeral migrations of the zooplankton at 5 depths in a watercolumn of 1 meter were studied in relation to several environmental factors: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll content. The photosynthesis shows a minimum during the night and shows a maximum during the late afternoon, at which time the water-temperature is also maximal. Holo- and meroplanktonic organisms migrate towards the surface around 3-5 o'clock a.m., at which time the chlorophyll content is minimal, hence our hypothesis of nocturnal grazing, this phenomenon perhaps combined with a nocturnal... |

<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-to), where to = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). At 25 °C and 30 promille S, average embryonic development time and generation time are 4 and 9 d... |

Beach samples from the Belgian coast and the Nieuwpoort Channel have been examined for (a) coliform and other common bacteria and (b) more serious pathogens, to determine from their distribution the influence of season, tide, presence of human and other animals and of effluent. There were more coliforms in summer than in spring. State of tides had no significant effect on coliform numbers. The dry sand above HWM, occupied by holidaymakers, was as polluted as intertidal sand. Sand in the Channel near a sewage outfall was rich in coliforms. <i>Salmonella paratyphi </i> B was also found, but no <i>Shigella</i> spp., although <i>Shigella phages</i> were present. |
