Nematode assemblages were sampled seasonally at three subtidal stations along the Belgian coast. The stations were characterized by muddy sediments (station 115), fine sand (station 702) and fine to coarse sand (station 790). The forces structuring vertical distribution were investigated by evaluating abundance, species composition, diversity and trophic composition, and relating these to sediment composition, redox state and food sources. The nematode assemblages at the two finer grained stations (115, 702) were dominated by <i>Daptonema tenuispiculum</i> and <i>Sabatieria punctata</i>. For both species, the vertical distribution in the sediment seemed not dependent on the redoxchemistry, as former believed for <i>S.... |

The report describes the Belgian <i>Nephrops</i> directed fishery in the Central North Sea (Botney Gut-Silver Pit area) and analyzes the diurnal variations in CPUE and catch composition of several commercial <i>Nephrops</i> trawlers operating in this area. Peak CPUE-values were generally obtained after dawn and before dusk. Some anomalies however did occur. These are discussed in relation to the natural variations in light intensity on the sea floor and the food requirements of <i>Nephrops</i>. There was no evidence of significant changes in the length composition of <i>Nephros</i> taken at different times of the day. The data even suggest that all size groups of <i>Nephros</i> respond in the same... |

Concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O), oxygen, nitrate, and ammonium, as well as nitrification activity were determined along the salinity gradient of the Schelde Estuary, Northwest Europe, in October 1993, March 1994, and July 1996, The entire estuary was always supersaturated with N2O. Concentrations ranged from 338 nmol dm-3 (31 times supersaturated) in the O2-poor upper estuary, down to about 10 nmol dm-3 (slight supersaturation) at the mouth of the estuary. Nearly all N2O was lost to the atmosphere within the estuary rather than being transported to the open sea. The mean annual emission from the Schelde estuary to... |

Marine fouling causes economical problems. Fouling diminishes the efficiency of propulsion of the ships. It enlarges the cost in fuel. Another effect is the loss in time and money because it necessitates frequent docking of the ships. These organisms increase the corrosion of metal in seawater. The damage to the timber constructions by marine borers causes renewed change of the piles. Therefore information was given about the principal fouling organisms at the Belgian coast. Some biologic aspects of the fouling were reviewed as the biotic succession by the different communities, the relation of fouling growth to local environments, the vertical zonation and the settling behavior of larvae controlled by salinity, temperature and light. |

A survey of the actual brackish-water malacofauna of Belgium is presented. Two regions have been investigated: a) the coastal area and b) the Belgian part of the Western Scheldt, downstreams of Antwerp. The following species were recorded: <i>Hydrobia ulvae, Hydrobia ventrosa, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Assiminea grayana, Alderia modesta, Limapontia depressa, Ovatella myosotis, Leucophytia bidentata</i> and <i>Cerastoderma glaucum</i>. <i>Tergipes tergipes, Tenellia adspersa</i> and <i>Eubranchus</i> sp., three species which are known from literature, could not be rediscovered during the present investigation. On the other hand, a current revision of <i>Hydrobia ventrosa</i> from the collections of... |

Nine heavy metals have been analysed in the liver, muscle and kidneys of sperm whales that stranded on the Belgian coast, November 18, 1994. The concentrations of most of the studied inorganic contaminants -except mercury and cadmium- were very low. The mercury content of the tissues was high, but in the range of those found in sperm whales previously described in the literature, as shown by Joiris et al. (this volume), and most of the mercury was found under an inorganic form. We found a close correlation between the mercury and selenium contents of the livers, which strongly suggests that the pollutant was detoxified under the tiemannite form, and therefore was not potentially toxic for the animals. On the contrary, cadmium was found in high... |

Four sperm whales (three subadult males stranded on the Belgian coast, a fourth older male found dead at sea) were analysed for total mercury, methylmercury and organochlorines. All four were part of a total of 24 sperm whales that stranded on the North Sea coasts over a period of six months, a highly unusual phenomenon. Total mercury levels ranged from 0.5 µg/g fw in kidney and 1 in muscle, up to 15 in liver. The finding of at least 90% of the mercury in its inorganic form confirms the existence of detoxification mechanisms in the liver of cetaceans. PCB concentrations in muscle, liver, kidney and blubber ranged from 10 to 25 µg/g lipids. These results are in the same order of magnitude as literature data, which however does not imply that there is no... |

On November 18, 1994, four sperm whales were discovered dead on the Belgian coast, and on January 12, 1995, three live sperm whales stranded on the Dutch coast. Necropsies were conducted following a standardized procedure and samples were collected. Two Belgian sperm whales had a severe weight deficit and the Dutch sperm whales had reductions in blubber thickness. Agonal lesions such as visceral passive congestion and lung edema were due to the stranding. Significant lesions included acute ulcerations of the skin and acute to subacute ulcerative stomatitis. Severe diffuse subacute to chronic ulcerative external otitis was noted in four animals. Progressive weakness and/or potential alterations of echolocation might have predisposed these sperm whales to... |
