CHAVES,Valesca de Souza; MARCON,Jaydione Luiz; DUNCAN,Wallice Paxiúba; ALVES-GOMES,José Antônio.
ABSTRACT Deltamethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide widely used in pest control in Brazilian agriculture. The intensive and disordered use of this pesticide in the Amazon region can drive it into aquatic ecosystems in several ways, but mainly by runoff and leaching. The present study was conceived to determine the acute toxicity (LC50) of a deltamethrin based pesticide (DBP) and to characterize its effects on two biochemical biomarkers, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), in tissues of the electric fish Microsternarchus cf. bilineatus. Fishes were exposed to concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 μg L-1 of DBP for up to 96 hours. For each treatment, the absolute activity of the enzymes GST (muscle and liver) and AChE (muscle and...

Adonis,Marta I; Díaz,Jose; Miranda,Veronica R; Chahuan,Marco; Zambrano,Alcides; Benitez,Hugo C; Campos,Monica; Avaria,Pablo; Urzúa,Ulises; Marín,Pedro; Gohurdett,Mariela; Cisterna,Yasna; Gil,Lionel.
BACKGROUND: The mortality of lung cancer (LC), increases each year in the world, in spite of any advances, in development of new drugs to advance stages of LC. The high incidence of LC has been associated with smoking habit, genetic diversity and environmental pollution. Antofagasta region has been reported to have the highest LC mortality rate in Chile and its inhabitants were exposed to arsenic in their drinking water in concentrations as high as 870 μg/L. Non-invasive techniques such as biomarkers (Automatic Quantitative Cytometry: AQC and DR70) and Auto Fluorescence Bronchoscopy (AFB) might be potentially useful as a supplementary diagnostic approach and early detection. Early detection is one of the most important factors to intervene and...

Abessa,Denis Moledo de Souza; Zaroni,Letícia Pires; Sousa,Eduinetty Ceci Pereira Moreira de; Gasparro,Marcia Regina; Pereira,Camilo Dias Seabra; Rachid,Bauer Rodarte de Figueredo; Depledge,Michael; King,Rebecca Susan.
The physiological conditions of mussels from Ubatuba and Santos and also of organisms transplanted from Ubatuba to Santos were studied by using different techniques. Assays for lysosomal stability were conducted on the haemolymph. Heart rate activity was monitored for 6h. The embryonic development of larvae obtained from the collected mussels was analysed. For all the compared groups of mussels, no significant differences were observed for the cardiac activity monitoring and the embryonic bioassays. The mean Neutral Red (NR) retention time was similar for the animals from Santos and Ubatuba, whereas the organisms transplanted to Santos showed a reduction in the retention time of the dye, indicating damage in the lysosomal membranes. These differences were...

The lysosomal stability as a biomarker for the determination of pollution in aquatic environments BABT
Nazar,Maria Loreto; Rodrigues,Luiz Erlon Araujo; Nascimento,Iracema.
This work studied the effects caused by five different formulae of gasoline on the stability of the lysosomes isolated from the liver of the tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus). The functional integrity of the lysosomal membranes was evaluated via the acid phosphatase activity. The results showed that there were significant changes in the stability of the lysosomes exposed to the presence of the hydrocarbons in the environment. Therefore, considering the method's simplicity, the sensitivity of the responses and its low cost the assessment of the lysosomal activity could be an important tool for the study of the effects of pollution in the aquatic environments.

Trends in biological dosimetry: an overview BABT
Amaral,Ademir.
Biological dosimetry (biodosimetry) is based on investigations of induced biological effects (biomarkers) in order to correlate them with radiation dose. Among the indicators employed in biodosimetry, scoring of chromosome aberrations is the most reliable method to quantify individual exposure to ionizing radiation. The technique, applied to circulating lymphocytes, has been developed into a routine procedure to evaluate the dose in the case of real or suspected accidental exposure. Considering the radiosensitivity of lymphocytes in vitro and in vivo as being the same, the dose effect relationship obtained after in vitro irradiation of blood has been widely used, with medico-legal value, for evaluating individual radiation exposure. This report presents an...

Detection of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains isolated in Brazil using a multimarker genetic assay for katG and rpoB genes BJID
Café Oliveira,Luita Nice; Muniz-Sobrinho,Jairo da Silva; Viana-Magno,Luiz Alexandre; Oliveira Melo,Sônia Cristina; Macho,Antonio; Rios-Santos,Fabrício.
Abstract Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) is a serious world health problem that limits public actions to control tuberculosis, because the most used anti-tuberculosis first-line drugs fail to stop mycobacterium spread. Consequently, a quick detection through molecular diagnosis is essential to reduce morbidity and medical costs. Despite the availability of several molecular-based commercial-kits to diagnose multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, their diagnostic value might diverge worldwide since Mycobacterium tuberculosis genetic variability differs according to geographic location. Here, we studied the predictive value of four common mycobacterial mutations in strains isolated from endemic areas of Brazil. Mutations were found at the frequency of...

Association of genotypes with viral load and biochemical markers in HCV-infected Sindhi patients BJM
Riaz,Saba; Bashir,Muhammad Faisal; Haider,Saleem; Rahid,Naeem.
Abstract The presented study had two objectives. The first was to examine distributions of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) genotypes in Sindh, Pakistan, where HCV is prevalent. The other was to explore clinically relevant relationships between the genotypes, viral load (measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction assays) and biochemical markers. For this, 1471 HCV-infected patients in six cities in Sindh were recruited and sampled. HCV genotype distributions varied among the cities, but genotype 3a was most prevalent, followed by 3b, 1a and 1b (detected in 51.5, 22.7. 9.25 and 3.2% of the cases, respectively). No type-specific sequences were detected in serum samples from 189 (12.8%) of the 1471 patients. Frequencies of low (<200,000 IU/mL serum),...
