The aim of this study was to evaluate the seasonal variations of six biomarkers on Mytilus galloprovincialis, using comparison with physiological index and chemical contamination levels on two sites of Mediterranean sea. The seasonal variations of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), DNA adducts, benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase (BPH), heat-shock proteins (HSP), metallothioneins (MT) and multixeniobiotic proteins (MXR) were estimated over a two-year period, on mussels which were sampled in Carteau (original site) and La Fourcade (transplanted organisms). Metabolomics is a new approach to assess the contamination of organisms, environmental compartments or foodstuffs, and the impact marine pollution, (natural or anthropogenic), can have on them. Through the analysis of the variation of the metabolite profiles present in the cell, tissues, organs or even the whole organism it is possible to define a physiological state, a stage of development, or the level and nature of a contamination. In the aim to develop biomarkers of genotoxicity for the biomonitoring of the marine environment,the formation of DNA adducts and oxidized DNA bases was studied for the sentinel organism, Mytilus sp, following exposure to B[a]P via the trophic supply. DNA adducts and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-désoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) were respectively measured by 32P post-labeling technique and high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrochemical detection. The developped model of exposure was validated for the realisation of toxicological studies in Mytilus sp. Biological responses and contaminant levels in biological tissues were investigated in fish specimens of grass goby (Zosterisessor ophiocephalus) collected in spring 2000 in a moderately polluted brackish ecosystem, the Orbetello lagoon (southern coast of Tuscany, Italy). The complexity of harmful effects that contaminants may cause in fish over time was assessed. L’étude ECUME était une opération destinée à tester localement dans les eaux côtières du littoral normand, des outils développés nationalement lors de nombreux travaux, et pressentis pour être utilisés lors des prochaines campagnes d’évaluation de la qualité chimique des masses d’eau littorales pour la DCE. Ceci afin de déterminer la méthode la plus adaptée et opérationnelle de les déployer, et comparer leurs résultats entre eux et par rapport aux connaissances actuelles des niveaux de contamination.
