ABSTRACT: Anomalocardia brasiliana post-larvae were cultured for 28 days to evaluate the effect of stocking density on their growth and survival rate. Three stocking densities were tested 40, 80 and 160 post-larvae cm-2, in experimental units (2-L) with static cultivation system and total water renewal at each 48 hours. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and three repetitions each. Stocking density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length within 24 days, while only 18% of the post-larvae at density of 80 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length in the same time. The density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 had the highest specific growth rate, 4.98±0.08% day-1. The survival rates of post-larvae at lower densities were... |

Aboriginal and nonaboriginal fishing-dependent communities on the coast of British Columbia, Canada, having lost traditional fisheries management institutions along with significant fishing opportunity, are in the process of rebuilding local and regional institutions to allow their survival. Sometimes, the rebuilding effort involves the creation of largely new institutions. It can also involve the reactivation, reinvention, or repositioning of older ones. We consider the aspirations, strategies, and activities of organizations in two regions of the coast involved in two different fisheries: salmon on the north coast and intertidal clams in the Broughton Archipelago. We analyze what the two regions have in common, as well as their differences, to generate... |

Leisure fishing, open to everyone and without a license, is a leisure activity in which many people are interested. Conversely to other harvesting activities such as fresh water fishing and hunting, it has practically not been studied until now (Appéré et Bonnieux, 2002). This study, dedicated to practice of leisure fishing at sea in the Gulf of Morbihan, set itself several objectives: - collect and assemble the available knowledge on regulations and practice of maritime leisure fishing - assess the amount of harvesting of certain recreational types of fishing and the economic impact generated by this activity, - highlight the problems of existing or potential cohabitations among the various users of the space and resources in the Gulf. - develop an... |

The French network for the surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) was officially set up in 1992 to control the shellfish status along the French coasts according to the European directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EC. The objectives are 1) the surveillance of notifiable diseases present in France (Bonamiosis and Marteiliosis of flat oysters Ostrea edulis), 2) the surveillance of health status of cultured and wild populations of molluscs, 3) the study of abnormal mortality and 4) the control of exchanges from European and third countries. In this context, a new surveillance programme, called Active Targeted Survey, part of the REPAMO, was applied in 2004 in order to improve the monitoring of the health status of the French mollusc populations... |

In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The drop in the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating demographic strategy. Large deposits are fairly rare. In 7 years, only one age group, born in 1971, withstood the fishery. Many age groups of satisfactory abundance, from the end of the 80s on, combined with a total disruption of the fishery for a few years, lead to a recovery of the stock with fishing levels equivalent (today) to those of the 1950s. The clam, though less iconic than the king scallop in the local context, has now been for a number of... |

During the 1950s, the clam played only a bit part in the local maritime context. It was the focus of a different fleet than the king scallop fleet, with a lesser fishing capacity (fleet from the Relecq Kerhuon) and an average annual catch of around 150 tonnes. In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The first stages of this evolution are detailed by Le Gall (1969) and Piboubès (1973). Slowly, the fleet developed (from the 70s on, with the progressive arrival of seaweed boats in the fishery) The drop of the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating... |

Digestive microbiota provides a wide range of beneficial effects on host physiology and are therefore likely to play a key role in marine intertidal bivalve ability to acclimatize to the intertidal zone. This study investigated the effect of intertidal levels on the digestive bacterial microbiota of oysters Crassostrea gigas and clams Ruditapes philippinarum, two bivalves with different ecological niches. Based on the 16S rRNA region sequencing, digestive glands, seawater and sediments harbored specific bacterial communities, dominated by OTUs assigned to the Mycoplasmatales, Desulfobacterales and Rhodobacterales orders, respectively. Field implantation modified digestive bacterial microbiota of both bivalve species according to their intertidal position.... |

Mortalities in a number of commercially important mollusc species have been associated with the detection of viruses belonging to several families. The first description of a virus was in adult eastern oyters, Crassostrea virginica, with the detection of virus particles resembling members of the family Herpesviridae. Subsequently, mass mortalities in French stocks of adult Portuguese oysters, C. angulata, were associated with irido-like virus infection. Other viruses observed in molluscs are described as members of the families Iridoviridae, Papovaviridae and Reoviridae. Little information is available on viral infections that affect molluscs due to primarily to the inadequacy of diagnostic methods that are employed when mass mortality events occur. Most... |

Perkinsosis is one of the most widespread diseases affecting commercially important species of molluscs globally. We examined the impact of Perkinsus spp. on shell growth at the individual scale in 2 clam species: Ruditapes decussatus from Mundaka Estuary (Spain) and R. philippinarum from Arcachon Bay (France). At Arcachon, 2 contrasting sites in terms of environment and Perkinsus olseni presence were chosen: Arguin (disease-free) and Ile aux Oiseaux (infected site). We monitored the dynamics of perkinsosis over the course of the experiment at Mundaka and Ile aux Oiseaux. Prevalences were high (>70%), and intensities were around 10(5) cells g(-1) wet gills at Ile aux Oiseaux, and 10(6) cells g(-1) at Mundaka. No significant differences in prevalence or... |

Different types of pregrowth of the Japanese palourde are compared on the some site. The method by upwelling which is the more common used, to have good growth, requires a compromise between the running and the raised biomass. Two periods are critical, in the summer the growth of mollusks is stopped because of a decrease in the phytoplanktonic production ; in the winter, a fall in temperature lessens filtration and stops growth. The results concern clams consummatation rates of particular food (chlorophyll, protids, lipids, glucids) as weIl as the way to supply the decreasing growth : increase of phytoplankyonic production in the summer by recycling waters from nurseries that are loaded with ammoniac and raise winter temperatures by using under-ground... |
