Renewed interest in conulariids has resulted in clarification of problems in the paleobiology of this group. Discoveries of skeletal structures and specimens preserved in situ, coupled with cladistic analyses, have led to a revival of Kiderlen's (1937) hypothesis that conulariids were polypoid scyphozoans or a sister taxon of this class. Until 1979, research on conulariids centered on the description of new species and on the erection of subgroups using phenetic approaches. Few papers addressed the paleobiology and phylogenetic affinities of conulariids, and none employed cladistics. In contrast, the 1980's saw the publication of major papers on the paleoecology of conulariids, and during this decade the hypothesis that conulariids were benthic organisms... |

The holotype of Malvinoconularia cahuanotensis (Brania and Vanek) (Devonian, Bolivia), the type species of the monospecific genus Malvinoconularia Babcock et al., is redescribed and refigured. M. cahuanotensis exhibits several gross morphological features that together are uniquely shared with Reticulaconularia baini (Babcock and Feldmann). In both taxa, the transverse ribs are nodose, the interspaces bear longitudinal ridges (bars or crests) that are collinear (line up) across the transverse ribs, and the longitudinal centerline (midline) of the faces is marked by a subdued ridge. Additionally, the two species may also be similar in the anatomy and external ornament of the corner sulcus. The slightly undulose geometry of the transverse ribs of M.... |

Seabather's eruption is a papulo-pruritic dermatitis caused by the nematocysts of the larvae of the jellyfish Linuche unguiculata retained in the clothing fibers. Previously reported in Brazil, this work describes fourteen cases that occurred in the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The new cases observed over a short period of time (the first half of January, 2012), at the height of the summer season, should alert health teams to possible epidemics on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina. |

dSexual reproduction is widespread among eukaryotes, and the sex-determining processes vary greatly among species. While genetic sex determination (GSD) has been intensively described in bilaterian species, no example has yet been recorded among non-bilaterians. However, the quasi-ubiquitous repartition of GSD among multicellular species suggests that similar evolutionary forces can promote this system, and that these forces could occur also in non-bilaterians. Studying sex determination across the range of Metazoan diversity is indeed important to understand better the evolution of this mechanism and its lability. We tested the existence of sexlinked genes in the gonochoric red coral (Corallium rubrum, Cnidaria) using restriction site-associated DNA... |

A new species of nephtheid soft coral inhabiting the northeast Pacific Ocean is described from samples collected using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and a benthic trawl. Two hundred thirty ROV video observations provide additional information about the biogeographical distribution and habitat characteristics of this new species and are used to supplement the information ascertained from collected specimens. The species described herein is found through a broad range of depths (519-2034 m), has been observed through a latitudinal range of approximately 1581 km (33.10472°N; 47° 51.412’N), and has primarily been observed living upon hard-rock substrate. In addition, we revise the generic designation of the South African nephtheid Litophyton liltvedi and... |

Forty-six species of the superfamily Plumularioidea (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) and some material identified to the generic level, collected by the CANCAP and Mauritania-II expeditions of the Rijkmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum) in the period 1976-1988, are described, as well as two other species that were used in the present study. In addition to the descriptions, synonymy, variability and geographical distribution are discussed; autoecological data and measurements are also presented. The new species described here are: Aglaophenia svobodai spec. nov., Streptocaulus caboverdensis spec. nov., S. chonae spec. nov., Antennella confusa spec. nov. and Nemertesia anonyma spec. nov. All species are figured. The general... |

Four new genera, Rhytisma, Klyxum and Skamnarium (family Alcyoniidae) and Sansibia (family Xeniidae), are proposed to accommodate a number of species wrongly assigned to some established genera. A large number of the species concerned have been previously included in the genus Alcyonium, and remarks are made concerning the heterogenous nature of that genus. The reassignment of Parerythropodium hicksoni Utinomi, 1972, to Erythropodium, Alcyonium gracillimum Kükenthal, 1906, to Scleronephthya, and Clavularia hamra to Briareum is also discussed, and the existence of Funginus Tixier-Durivault, 1987, as a replacement name for Fungulus Tixier-Durivault, 1970, is highlighted. |

An account is given of some hydroids from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, collected during dives of submersibles "Nautile" (operated by IFREMER, France) and "Alvin" (operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, U.S.A). The specimens came from three main sectors of the ridge: 15 species from localities near hydrothermal fields (540-1727 m) SW of the Azores, five species from an area (2565-3902 m) west of the Cape Verde Islands near Researcher Ridge, and one species from a site (4529-4578 m) within the Vema Fracture zone west of Guinea Bissau. In all, 21 species were distinguished, comprising two anthoathecates and 19 leptothecates. The families Lafoeidae and Sertulariidae were best represented, with six and four species respectively. Halecium profundum spec.... |
