We contend there are currently two competing scenarios for the sustainable development of shrimp aquaculture in coastal areas of Southeast Asia. First, a landscape approach, where farming techniques for small-scale producers are integrated into intertidal areas in a way that the ecological functions of mangroves are maintained and shrimp farming diseases are controlled. Second, a closed system approach, where problems of disease and effluent are eliminated in closed recirculation ponds behind the intertidal zone controlled by industrial-scale producers. We use these scenarios as two ends of a spectrum of possible interactions at a range of scales between the ecological, social, and political dynamics that underlie the threat to the resilience of mangrove... |

Property rights are important institutions for regulating the use of valuable natural resources from coastal ecosystems. In this case study, we identify and analyze property rights and user patterns related to small-scale coastal fisheries in the Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. User patterns and user groups have changed significantly over the last century, as commercial fishing has been increasingly replaced by recreational activities. Interviews with local resource users and owners of water properties in two different areas, Möja and Ornö parishes within the Stockholm Archipelago, revealed a very diverse pattern of property and user rights, with a large number of water and fishing rights owners. Recreational fisheries, including both... |

A dedicated trawling experiment was performed at three sites on the Gulf of Lion continental shelf, with the aim of assessing the resuspension of particulate and dissolved matter triggered by different types of trawls on muddy sediments. The different configurations were: (i) bottom trawl, with bobbin for ground rope (Rockhopper): (ii) bottom trawl, without bobbin (Medits); and (iii) pelagic trawl, towed at 1 and 10m above the seabed. The plumes of resuspended sediment were measured using the acoustic backscattered intensity, from a towed ADCP. Concomitant profiles of particle size-distribution, light transmission and water samples were collected, outside and inside the plumes. The analysis of the data enabled derivation of the major physical and... |

Coastal fisheries and marine cultures developed under strong biological, economical and social constraints. Among others are limitation of space and resources, limited availibility of capital, hardship of work,... Industrial, urbanistic and touristic development add to these constraints in coastal areas. Coherent scheme for coastal fisheries management, capture and culture, is of an urgent need. In renewable resources and environnement economics, depletion and pollution resulting from common ownership have been the core of the theory about fisheries management. The chronology of Japanese coastal fisheries management system shows a different approach. In law and decision making, social and economic consequences of conflictual uses and of their regulation... |

The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. To do so, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries entrusted this task to three experts, who are the authors of this report. In accordance with their remit, the situation of fisheries in territorial waters and estuaries of metropolitan France and the four DOM overseas departments ( counties) was examined, in the framework of meetings with professional fishermen, administrations, elected officials and scientific organisations. The first part situates fishing activities in coastal areas within the overall context... |

Red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fishery. Analysis of catches, nominal effort and landings structure in 2011. A descriptive analysis of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fishery within the Buenos Aires Coastal Ecosystem (BCE) and the Argentine continental shelf, between 34° S and 42° S, during 2011 was performed. The catches landed, of a total of 3,627 t, performed in a direct and incidental way by an heterogeneous fleet of 149 vessels belonging to five strata (Ia, Ib, Ic, IIa and IIb) in 1,527 fishing trips represented a 36.7% decrease as regards 2010. The spatiotemporal analysis allowed to determine that the highest yields of the species were obtained close to 50 m depth, that coincides with the highest surface temperatures in the area, that decrease in a... |

The study aims to discriminate juvenile and adult concentration areas of white croacker Micropogonias furnieri and striped weakfish Cynoscion striatus in two different areas: Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and El Rincón (Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The length structure and the relative abundance of these two species were analyzed with data from a research cruise carried out by R/V Dr.E.L.Holmberg during November 1994. Data of relative abundance in t/nm2 were considered to define distribution and concentration areas. 49 samples of white croaker and 41 striped weakfish from AUCFZ a, inside the area of Río de la Plata and in front of Montevideo coast, at depths lesser than 8 meters, while the adults were located in the northern coast of... |

Assessment of abundance indexes for whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) and brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis) obtained with general linear models: Monte Carlo simulation and analysis of the interactions with the “year” factor. The effect of interactions with the year factor on the annual index of relative abundance obtained with general linear models applied to the cath per unit of effort data of whitemouth croaker and brazilian flathead commercial fleet was evaluated applying the Monte Carlo simulation. Levels on the relative percentage of variance explained by the interactions with the year factor (%RVEAÑO) were determined, above which loss of proportionality between the relative abundance series given by the index and the real series... |

This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year... |

Since the early works of Balthazar Osório, at the turn of the century, only few papers have been published on the ichthyofauna of São Tomé island. The papers dealing with these fishes were compilations of previous works or the results of a few scientific expeditions (e.g. "Galathea" and "Calypso"). In this paper, we present the results of several surveys carried out from the island over the last decade, together with an annotated revision of the known bibliography for the area. The result is an inventory of the coastal fish of São Tomé island. Our records (124 species belonging to 59 families) are based on fish captured, photographed or observed whilst diving and also on those landed by local artisanal fishermen. In this paper we report a total of 185... |

Patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti) is one of the predominant cartilaginous fishes of the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic Ocean). It is caught, mainly, in the coastal multispecific fishery with nearly other 30 bony and cartilaginous species. The group is known as ‘variado costero’. In this work the smoothhound abundance indices (CPUE) and standardized efforts for the 1992-2008 period in the area between 34~’S-42~’S were estimated. The General Lineal Model (GLM) and data derived from the argentine commercial fleet were used. Other aspects that could affect estimates and trends of the annual indices were also analyzed. Mean CPUE values estimated with the GLM, considered as annual standardized abundance indices, show an increasing trend as of 2000; the... |

The analytical framework used throughout most of this study is directly inspired from transaction-cost economics, implying that a lot of attention is devoted to monitoring and enforcement costs involved in collective schemes. One of its most important contributions is to show that, with the help of these tools combined with conventional market power considerations, successes and failures of different groups of fishermen according to their technique and site of operation can be well accounted for. The outline is as follows. In Section 1, background information regarding Senegalese small-scale marine fisheries are provided and the methodology of the study based on cross-section data is shortly described. In Section 2, an historical sketch of all recent... |
