The French project "Morest", coordinated by IFREMER, aims to understand the causes of the summer mortalities in Crassostrea gigas. In 2001, three sets of families were bred following a nested half-sib mating design. 17 half-sib families (HSF) were obtained in this first generation (G1) and reared in 3 sites. Significant differences in survival were observed among HSF, and some HSF showed high levels of mortality in all sites, clearly indicating a genetic basis for survival. In 2002, a second generation (G2), including divergent selection and inbred lines, was constituted. Monitoring of survival and growth of G2s were the same as in 2001. Significant differences in survival were found between the offspring of the "high" and "low" selected groups and between... |

This atlas presents in a synthetic form the hydrodynamical, geological and biological characteristics of one of the most studied region of the French littoral. Geologic and geophysical data of the Saint-Brieuc Bay show that the deep basement consists of pre-palaeozoic or palaeozoic sedimentary series in the centre of the Bay, whereas metamorphic and magmatic formations are dominant in coastal regions. The location of superficial sediments in the Bay, is mainly due to marine currents. A granulometric gradient, from very fine to coarse sediments, appears in two directions: from the coast towards the high sea, and from the west to the east. Rocky substrates disrupt the sediment distribution, with, most of the time, a concentration of coarse sediments near the... |

The objective of this study was to develop an effective biological sampling programme for fish species in the English Channel (ICES Divisions Vild and Vile) which are not subject to quota management, and to prepare these data for use in multispecies, multi-fleet models being developed by the Channel Fisheries Study Group. Length and age data were coIlected for six non-quota species, and length data for a further five species. The samples were coIlected over a period of two years from important ports on the French and UK coasts. The exploitation patterns of each species were described by allocating catches from similar catching gears, regions, seasons and target species into common units referred to as métiers. The most important métiers in terms of landed... |

Since nearly twenty years, world exploitation of crustaceans increases from 1,263,000 tons in 1968 to 3,419,000 tons in 1985, overcoming the predictions of 1970 by more than one million tons. Penaeid prawns fisheries experienced a very fast development. The krill resource proved to be practically commercially unworkable. By now, the major crustaceans stocks appear fully exploited. During the same period, penaeid aquaculture experienced a fast growth, which should continue in the near future. |

Bi-parental families were produced in hatchery and tested in the field in 2001. Two sets of 5 families were constituted, selected on their high (R) and low (S) survival. These two sets were reared in Brittany from March to November 2002. Samplings were performed twice a month to obtain data on biometry, survival, reproductive cycle, biochemical composition, adenylate energy charge, hemolymph parameters (ions and defense system) and muscle strength. "R" and "S" oysters exhibited different reproductive effort and spawning strategy. "R" oysters allocated less energy in gonad than "S" ones and presented a complete spawning at the end of August contrary to the "S" which spawns partially. Mortality started in July when the seawater temperature reached 19 degree... |

This study has been carried out over a period of four months (August, November 2001 and January, March 2002). The study aimed at establishing the magnitude of parasitization in different fish species as well as quantifying the relationship between the parasites and their fish hosts. Fish samples were collected from five main landing beaches: Vanga, Shimoni, Gazi, Mombasa and Kilifi. Fish samples examined for Parasites included: Siganus sutor, Plectorhynchus flavomaculatus, P. Sordidus, Lethrinus nebulosus, Sardinella gibosa, Scarus horrid, Sellar crumenophthalmus, Rastrelliger kanarguta, Parupeneus indicus, Mugil cephalus, Scombromorus commerson, Epinephelus macrospilas, Thunnus sp, Leptoscarus viagensis, L. sordidus and Hemiramphus far. Fish samples were... |

Assessment of abundance indexes for whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) and brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis) obtained with general linear models: Monte Carlo simulation and analysis of the interactions with the “year” factor. The effect of interactions with the year factor on the annual index of relative abundance obtained with general linear models applied to the cath per unit of effort data of whitemouth croaker and brazilian flathead commercial fleet was evaluated applying the Monte Carlo simulation. Levels on the relative percentage of variance explained by the interactions with the year factor (%RVEAÑO) were determined, above which loss of proportionality between the relative abundance series given by the index and the real series... |
