Effect of Wood shavings on the Temperature Profile of Livestock Waste during Composting with Daily Turning CIGR Journal
Ngwabie, Ngwa Martin; Tiku, Tabe David; Yengong, Lamfu Fabrice; Manga, Ebot Veronica.
Measurements were conducted to assess the impact of wood shavings on the temperature profiles of cattle and pig manure during aerated composting. Cattle stomach waste to wood shavings were mixed in mass ratios of 100:0%, 80:25%, and 75:25% and placed in three different chambers. Pig manure was also mixed with wood shavings in ratios similar to that of cattle stomach waste and placed in three different chambers. The piles were left to compost for 21 days after which the experiment was repeated. During composting, each pile temperature and pH were measured daily. On each measurement day, the compost pile in each chamber was weighed and aerated by moving into an empty chamber. Compost samples were collected from each chamber twice a week for dry matter and...

Microbiological biodiversity in poultry and paddy straw wastes in composting systems BJM
Devi,Sunita; Sharma,C.R; Singh,Kamlesh.
Immense quantity of waste is generated in association with poultry meat egg and crop production. The potential risks due to disposal of these wastes are magnified as a result of dense refinement of poultry production and the decreasing amount of land available for waste disposal. The study aims at studying the microbiological biodiversity of poultry waste and paddy straw based co-composting system. The predominant microflora of the poultry manure were bacteria, fungi, enteric bacteria and spore forming bacteria whose population was high at the initiation of composting but decreased significantly as the compost approached maturity. The initial load of inherent enteric groups of bacteria in poultry waste, that also includes some pathogenic ones, is...

Exploring dynamic mechanisms of learning networks for resource conservation Ecology and Society
Matous, Petr; University of Tokyo; University of Sydney; petr@civil.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp; Todo, Yasuyuki; Waseda University; yastodo@waseda.jp.
The importance of networks for social-ecological processes has been recognized in the literature; however, existing studies have not sufficiently addressed the dynamic nature of networks. Using data on the social learning networks of 265 farmers in Ethiopia for 2011 and 2012 and stochastic actor-oriented modeling, we explain the mechanisms of network evolution and soil conservation. The farmers’ preferences for information exchange within the same social groups support the creation of interactive, clustered, nonhierarchical structures within the evolving learning networks, which contributed to the diffusion of the practice of composting. The introduced methods can be applied to determine whether and how social networks can be used to facilitate...

Biological efficiency of Agaricus brasiliensis cultivated in compost with nitrogen concentrations Horticultura Brasileira
Siqueira,Félix G de; Martos,Emerson T; Silva,Evânia Geralda da; Silva,Romildo da; Dias,Eustáquio S.
The production of compost is one of the most important steps for the cultivation of any species of mushroom. For the Agaricus species, this step is even more complex because it depends on the performance of different microorganisms that act on the substrate, turning it into selective compost that promotes the growth of the fungus to be cultivated. Among the various factors that affect the microbial activity, the initial concentration of nitrogen is considered one of the most important. Due to the lack of conclusive studies about that, the aim of this study was to evaluate the productivity and biological efficiency of Agaricus brasiliensis in compost prepared with different initial concentrations of nitrogen, according to the composting methodology and to...
