Evaluation of the Effect of Some Biopesticides on Alfalfa Weevil Larva, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal.) in Laboratory and Field Conditions CIGR Journal
Alizadeh, Esmaeil.
Alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica Gyllenhal.) control is traditionally based on the use of chemical insecticides. Due to the side effects of these compounds, there are many motivations for the use of integrated control methods, which may include the use of biopesticides (microbial and botanical). The result of the effect of seven doses  of the tested biopesticides (500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 and 3500 ppm) under laboratory conditions indicated that the insecticides Azadiractin® (1859.971 ppm) and Biobit® (2000.57 ppm) were of the highest, while Basiokara® (3178.697 ppm) and Naturalis® (2973.246 ppm) were of the lowest lethality. Field experiments were carried out based on randomized complete block design with 10 treatments and 4 replications. The...

Evaluación de un Detergente en Base a Benceno Sulfonato de Sodio para el Control de la Mosquita Blanca Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) y de la arañita Roja Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acarina: Tetranychidae) en Naranjos y Mandarinos Agricultura Técnica
Ripa S,Renato; Rodríguez A,Fernando; Larral D,Pilar; Luck,Robert  F.

AREAS,MAYSA S.; GONÇALVES,RICARDO M.; SOMAN,JOSÉ M.; SOUZA FILHO,RONALDO C.; GIORIA,RICARDO; SILVA JUNIOR,TADEU A.F. DA; MARINGONI,ANTONIO C..
ABSTRACT Bacterial spot, caused by Xanthomonas spp., is one of the major bacterial diseases in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The infection results in reduced crop yield, particularly during periods of high rainfall and temperature, due to the low efficiency of chemical control with copper bactericides. This study evaluated the copper and zinc sulfate sensitivity of 59 pathogenic strains of Xanthomonas euvesicatoria isolated from pepper plants produced in various regions throughout Brazil. Both the respective sulfates and a mixture thereof was evaluated at 50, 100, 200 and 400 μg.mL-1. All the evaluated strains were found to be resistant to zinc sulfate (100 μg.mL-1) and 86.4% were resistant to copper sulfate (200 μg.mL-1). The mixture of copper (200...

Assessment of gonadal follicle size in the invading bivalve Limnoperna fortunei (Mytilidae) Biocell
Guimarey,Pilar; Darrigran,Gustavo; Damborenea,Cristina; Penchaszadeh,Pablo E..
Limnoperna fortunei is an invasive gonochoristic and byssate freshwater bivalve originary from Southeast Asia. It shows great adaptive-reproductive ability, so knowledge of the gonadal cycle is an important factor for the prevention and control of this bioinvasion. This species is highly damaging to natural and human environments. We analyzed the distribution and maturity state of reproductive follicles in the mantle of both male and females. Male results are not shown but, in general, they followed the same pattern as that of females. Routine histological techniques included serial longitudinal sections and transversal sections in three body regions (anterior, middle and psoterior). Oocytes with conspicuous nucleoli were measured on both types of sections...

Effect of pines removal and soil litter treatments in the restoration of natural grasslands invaded by Pinus halepensis Boletín de la Sociedad
Cuevas,Yannina Andrea; Zalba,Sergio Martín.
Effect of pines removal and soil litter treatments in the restoration of natural grasslands invaded by Pinus halepensis. Ernesto Tornquist Provincial Park (Sierra de la Ventana, Buenos Aires, Argentina) protects a remnant of pampean grasslands and is seriously threatened by the spread of alien woody plants, among them by Pinus halepensis. The effect that this species has on the structure and functioning of the ecosystem lead to the implementation of control actions aimed to reduce invasion. This work presents the results of monitoring the recovery of native grasslands after two control strategies: complete and partial removal of invasive trees, with and without complementary restoration actions (removal of needles, soil disturbance, addition of top-soil...

Potential of sucrose and Pennisetum purpureum cv. Cameroon mulch on the management of Meloidogyne javanica and M. incognita BABT
Santiago,Débora Cristina; Homechin,Martin; Montalvan,Ricardo; Krzyzanowski,Alaide Aparecida.
The effects of sucrose on motility and infectiveness of juveniles of Meloidogyne javanica were evaluated under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, using brown sugar and crystal sugar. Results showed that crystal and brown sugar solutions reduced motility and promoted morphological alterations of juvenile nematodes in vitro. The increasing dosages of sucrose reduced the number of galls and egg masses in tomato root by reducing the number of infective juveniles. The efficiency of granular sucrose, sucrose solution, with and without elephant-grass mulch, in the reduction of reproduction and final population of M. incognita race 2, were also evaluated. Granular sucrose induced decrease on the numbers of galls and eggs masses per root system as well as on...

The organization of Hospital Infection Control Committees and their importance in Brazil BJID
El Far,Fabiane; Marino,Cristiane G. J.; Medeiros,Eduardo Alexandrino Servolo.
The importance of Hospital Infection Control Committees (HICC) increases every year due to the emergence of multiresistant bacterial strains, hospital outbreaks, and other factors that cause HI. This demonstrates the fragility of the quality of hospital and medical care. Having a well-organized HICC benefits hospitals by improving quality, lowering costs and, most important, reducing patient morbidity and mortality. This review records the history of the development of HICCs, their present organizational structure, and offers recommendations for the best methods of infection surveillance.

A glycoprotein E gene-deleted bovine herpesvirus 1 as a candidate vaccine strain BJMBR
Weiss,M.; Brum,M.C.S.; Anziliero,D.; Weiblen,R.; Flores,E.F..
A bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) defective in glycoprotein E (gE) was constructed from a Brazilian genital BoHV-1 isolate, by replacing the full gE coding region with the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene for selection. Upon co-transfection of MDBK cells with genomic viral DNA plus the GFP-bearing gE-deletion plasmid, three fluorescent recombinant clones were obtained out of approximately 5000 viral plaques. Deletion of the gE gene and the presence of the GFP marker in the genome of recombinant viruses were confirmed by PCR. Despite forming smaller plaques, the BoHV-1△gE recombinants replicated in MDBK cells with similar kinetics and to similar titers to that of the parental virus (SV56/90), demonstrating that the gE deletion had no deleterious effects...

Synergistic control of forearm based on accelerometer data and artificial neural networks BJMBR
Mijovic,B.; Popovic,M.B.; Popovic,D.B..
In the present study, we modeled a reaching task as a two-link mechanism. The upper arm and forearm motion trajectories during vertical arm movements were estimated from the measured angular accelerations with dual-axis accelerometers. A data set of reaching synergies from able-bodied individuals was used to train a radial basis function artificial neural network with upper arm/forearm tangential angular accelerations. The trained radial basis function artificial neural network for the specific movements predicted forearm motion from new upper arm trajectories with high correlation (mean, 0.9149-0.941). For all other movements, prediction was low (range, 0.0316-0.8302). Results suggest that the proposed algorithm is successful in generalization over...

Abstract In swine and bovines, leptospirosis prevention and control is carried out via vaccination of susceptible animals using bacterins. However, the efficiency of leptospirosis vaccines has been questioned. This work aimed to investigate the potency of five leptospirosis vaccines sold commercially in Brazil, challenging the animals with one autochthonous strain of Leptospira, Canicola serovar, denoted LO4, isolated from swine. The standard protocol was followed, and renal carriers of Leptospira were identified among the surviving animals by culture and PCR. Of the five vaccines tested, only two proved effective. None of the surviving animals was positive by culture; however, one animal was positive by PCR. Three of the five vaccines sold commercially in...

Evaluation of oxidative stability of mayonnaise containing poly ε- caprolactone nanoparticles loaded with thyme essential oil BJPS
Passos,Rhaysa Beatriz dos; Bazzo,Giovana Carolina; Almeida,Aline da Rosa; Noronha,Carolina Montanheiro; Barreto,Pedro Luiz Manique.
Suspensions of poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) nanoparticles loaded with thyme essential oil were prepared as a natural antioxidant in mayonnaise. Mean particle size was 204.9 ± 2.7 and 240.0 ± 5.5 nm respectively for nanoparticles prepared with PCL alone (NP-C) and for those loaded with thyme essential oil (NP-T). The polydispersity index indicated a homogeneous distribution of all particles, with no significant difference between NP-C and NP-T samples. The nanoparticles showed a large negative charge evidenced by zeta potential rates, indicating high physical stability. The use of PCL as a polymer provided high encapsulation efficiency for thyme essential oil (91.15 ± 2.12 %). DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method determined IC50 rates were 476.4 ± 33.6...

Controlled release formulations of herbicides based on micro-encapsulation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sopeña,Fátima; Maqueda,Celia; Morillo,Esmeralda.
Annual worldwide losses to weeds are estimated to comprise approximately 10-15% of attainable production among principal food sources. Worldwide consumption of herbicides represents 47.5% of the 2 million tons of pesticide consumed each year. However, the heavy use of herbicides has given rise to serious environmental and public health problems. It is therefore important to develop new herbicide formulations that are highly effective, that are safer (for the worker and for the environment), and that involve a low cost/production ratio. In this sense, Controlled release formulations of herbicides have become necessary in recent years, since they often increase herbicide efficacy at reduced doses. The present work reviews in detall the components of various...
