In order to find the global parameters which could explain the growth of Pacific Oyster Crassosrrea gigas. a survey of Pacific Oyster's growth has been done in Brittany from 1990 to 1995 and in France from 1993 to 1995. The analysis shows the positive influence of rain amount on weight grov,th except in eutrophic areas where it is the contrary. It also shows the positive influence of temperature provided it stays within an optimal range. statistically defined. Some characteristics of the production areas have been reviewed without achieving clear explanation of growth differences between sites. Further studies are necessary particularly in hydrodynamics and primary production determinism to progress. |

The regional monitoring network REMONOR, relying on the experience of IFREMER's REMORA national network, each year assesses the mortality, growth and quality for two age classes ("adults" = 2 years and "juveniles" = 1 year) of cup oysters, distributed among various farm sites in the main oyster farming sectors of Lower Normandy. This network, led in collaboration by LERN (Environment Resources Laboratory) and SMEL (Coastline Installations Public-Private Entity), this year welcomes a new farm site in Veules les Roses, in Seine Maritime (76), bringing to 18 the total number of monitored sites. For operational reasons, a reduced monitoring protocol was conducted in 2005 on this last farm site, which will not take on the network's standardised protocol until... |

The paper presents a mathematical model of the early larval stage, from spawn to the resorption of the yolk-sac, of the anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, of the Bay of Biscay. The model describes the temperature-dependent growth and drift of passive larvae by the currents and vertical turbulence. A numerical code has been built and numerous simulations, fed by both biological (egg surveys by AZTI-San Sebastian, Spain, and IFREMER, France) and physical (circulation model by IFREMER-Brest, France) data, were undertaken. Their main features are presented and discussed here, and some conclusions on the possible utilization of the results in improving estimates of anchovy stocks by the daily egg production method are drawn. |

The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were... |

The first half of 2007 is characterised by very low summer mortality rates (spring mortality has not been analysed due to the bad quality of the original batch). This low rate concerns the two different size classes of each station except Géfosse (BV02) where a high mortality has been monitored (see SUMON monitoring). Growth seems significant, but the adults' initial weight required a finer analysis. Juveniles had a larger growth than the previous years, and especially on the west coast. On the adult side, maturation was well advanced in June, but the September biometrics showed disparate filling rates between the different stations, and had us suppose that the spawning season was on. |

In the case of molluscs, the implementation of selection programs with a precise evaluation of the available genetic variability and the estimate of the transmissibility of the characters as well as their correlations, face two main obstacles: the first one, specific, derives from the existence of some reproduction systems that are sometimes complex and still imperfectly mastered as for the flat oyster plate Ostrea edulis; the other, more general, is directly dictated by the importance of the infrastructures needed to keep a large number of differentiated families in controlled farming conditions. Despite these obstacles, a number of programs have been developed over the last twenty years with encouraging results. |

The growth study of s tripped Mullet, from the Bay of Biscaye, from April to June is managed by scale reading. Sorne difficulties appear with the interpretation female scales. The Analysis of ovaries confirms that spring is the period of reproduction, and shows that the age of first reproduction is two year (65 %) or one year old (35 %). Secondly, the exploitation of various statistic data shows the evolution of landings of Stripped Mullet in several harbours, and especially in les Sables d'Olonne, since 1962. The reconstitution of the artisan trowlers effort in this harbour confirms the long decline of c.p.u.e . for Mullus surmuletus, and a rapid increase since 1981. The problem of the lack of data about the inshore fishery and about the composition of... |
