Intensive dairy farming systems from Holland and Brazil: SWOT analyse comparison 2
Passetti, Rodrigo Augusto Cortêz; Eiras, Carlos Emanuel; Gomes, Ludmila Couto; Santos, Junio Fabiano dos; Prado, Ivanor Nunes do.
Intensive systems of milk production in Brazil and Holland are compared by SWOT analysis. Twenty-one farms, 10 in Wageningen, central region of Holland, and 11 in Castro, central-eastern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, were sampled. Data were retrieved from semi-structured interviews with the owners or people responsible for dairy activities, using a questionnaire guide and a digital recorder. After results were analysed, a table was elaborated representing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks for each country. Dairy farms in Holland were uniform, or rather, small and medium-sized farms with high production. It has also been observed that Dutch farms have several problems due to high intensification, for example, hoof diseases with...

Components of (co)variance of the days open in Siboney dairy cows 45
González-Peña,D.; Espinoza-Villavicencio,J.L.; Guerra,D.; Palacios,A.; Évora,J.C.; Portales,A..
The records of 63,406 calvings of Siboney dairy cows (5/8 Holstein 3/8 Cuban Zebu) were used to estimate the components of covariance of the days open (DO). Five models were used: of repeatability; univariate; bivariate; of random regression with Legendre polynomials and the parity number as predicting variable; and a model of random regression with Legendre polynomials and heterogeneity of the residual variance. The heritability obtained with the univariate model was 0.09 in the first calving and decreased to 0.05 in the fifth. A higher estimate of heritability (0.12) was obtained with the repeatability model. When the model of random regression with heterogeneity of the residual variance was used, the heritability was higher than the values estimated...

Association of rumen fill score and energy status during the close-up dry period with conception at first artificial insemination in dairy cows 19
Kawashima, Chiho; Karaki, Chihiro; Munakata, Megumi; Matsui, Motozumi; Shimizu, Takashi; Miyamoto, Akio; Kida, Katsuya.
Recent studies have shown significant associations between prepartum energy status and postpartum fertility in dairy cows; therefore, the assessment of energy status by blood metabolites and metabolic hormones and suitable improvement of management during the prepartum period may enhance reproductive performance. Rumen fill score (RFS) is associated with feed intake; however, it is unknown whether RFS is also related to blood parameters. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between RFS and energy status during the prepartum period, and their associations with conception at first artificial insemination (AI) after parturition. In 42 multiparous Holstein cows, RFS assessment and blood sampling were carried out twice a week during 3 weeks of...
