The most frequent infectious diseases that affect fish are those of bacterial origin. In European sea bass fish farms (Dicentrarchus labrax) are included Vibrio spp., Pasteurella piscicida and Myxobacter spp. In addition to these, it is also possible to find, although lesser frequently, other pathogenic agents such as Pseudomonas spp., Aeromonas spp., Staphylococcus epidermis, Streptococcus spp. and Enterobacter spp. The presence of these micro-organisms in fish farms contributes for a significant decrease in fish production and subsequent loss of profitability in these aquaculture units. The use of antibiotics may therefore be necessary as a prophylactic measure although their systematic utilization leads to the development of strains of antibiotic... |

The optimal conditions for the retention of the second polar body in sea bass eggs were investigated by altering the timing, intensity and duration of application of pressure and cold shocks. Treatment optima for cold shocks were 0-1 degrees C for 15-20 min at 5 min after fertilisation (a.f.) and 8500 psi for 2 min at 6 min a.f. for pressure shocks. Meiogenesis was obtained by fertilising eggs with UV-irradiated homologous sperm (32,000 erg mm(-2)) and pressure or cold shocking eggs as above. 100% triploidy was induced following definition of liable periods for the disruption of the meiotic spindle obtained in gynogenesis. Ploidy investigations were performed on experimental groups by flow-cytometry. Verification of uniparental transmission in meiogens was... |

A study on nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was carried out in a flow-through land-based farm. The main objectives were (i) to calculate nitrogenous (N) and phosphorous (P) waste production (particulate and dissolved) from in situ measurements for different rearing ponds with specific fish biomasses, fish sizes and flow rates, (ii) to establish nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production budgets, ratios and equations, and (iii) to compare, for the whole farm, in situ measurements to estimate N and P waste production from waste equations. Waste production was manifest by an increase in concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen, total Kjeldhal nitrogen, particulate nitrogen, dissolved phosphorus and... |

Although the actiology of swimbladder inflation anomalies in important aquaculture species such as European sea bass D. labrax is not fully determined, culture conditions are commonly suggested as main contributory factors. Little information is available on whether swimbladder inflation has a genetic basis for its expression too. In this work, 24 full-sibling sea bass families from a 4 dams x 6 sires factorial crossing were reared under communal conditions. The larvae developing normal and abnormal (uninflated or hyper-inflated) swimbladders were genotyped at four microsatellite loci, Labrax-3, Labrax-13, Labrax-17, Labrax29, and allocated to the individual breeders. Out of 273 offspring, 97% could be assigned to a single parental pair. The genotype and... |

Sampling of a population of D. Labrax was one with spear diving catches. Morphometric and meristic data were used to calculate a biometric index. This index showed that all the bass of the Sete area belong to Dicentrarchus labrax, even if they were black spotted on the upper part of the body. Morphology was slightly different according to sex, but sex determination was not always possible using morphometric data. This inshore population shows some morphological characteristics (branchiospine and lateral line scale number) different from the data collected on the same sp along the Maroc Atlantic coast by Gravier, 1961. |

Plant-based products in fish diets are valuable protein alternatives to fishmeal for the aquafeed industry. Many plant feed ingredients contain polyphenolic compounds, including tannins, which can have beneficial or adverse effects. The tolerable threshold of ingested tannins is unknown for marine carnivorous fishes. We studied the effects of tannic acid (TA) supplementation to the diet of juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by measuring growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition. We randomly allocated groups of fish (initial mean body weight of 10.2 ± 0.7 g; n = 40 fish per tank) to 12 replicate cylindrical-conical tanks (three per treatment). The fish were assigned to one of four dietary treatments for five weeks:... |

Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The achieved results show that weaning with intermediary phases (sequences 2 or 3) yield best results. Furthermore the phase with artemia yields, systematically, better results than with harvested zooplankton ; then artemia seems a excellent substitute food representing a... |

The sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, has been subjected to intensive aquaculture on the Mediterranean cost for ten years. Marine fish hatcheries are key factors in the aquaculture field, and face different pathologies, especially one of viral origin (nodavirus) that could challenge their feasibility. Consequently, we have tried to provide some data on larvae and spawning stocks. Firstly, we have studied the immunoglobulins, components of the specific humoral immunity, and their role as antibodies. On adult basses, these immunoglobulins are tetrameric molecules with high molecular weight (850 kD), made of heavy (H) - 80 kD and light (L) - 26 kD chains. In the eggs, simplest forms such as monomeric or dimeric are brought to the fore; they are located under... |

Mature eggs were expressed from captured female and fertilised artificially with slightly bloody sperm, in dry conditions or in a humid atmosphere, both at 13 degree C. The best incubation conditions proved to be 13 degree C, with streptomycin and penicillin. Another sample was kept at 18 degree C. Hatching occurred after 4 or 5 days, larvae showing positive phototropism. The system of renewal of water and artificial food is described. The embryonic reserve drop of lipid disappeared between day 14 and 16. Observations on larvae were like previous ones, but live larvae had larger mouths than had fixed specimens, and it was found that temperatures of 13 degree C or 18 degree C were suitable beyond the egg stage. A sudden change in temperature caused by a... |

Ocean warming, eutrophication and consequent decrease in oxygen lead to smaller average fish size. Although such responses are well-known in an evolutionary context, involving multiple generations, it appears to be incompatible with current rapid environmental change. Rather, phenotypic plasticity could provide a means for marine fish to cope with rapid environmental changes. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying plastic responses to environmental conditions that favour small phenotypes. Our aim was to investigate how and why European sea bass that had experienced a short episode of moderate hypoxia during their larval stage subsequently exhibited a growth depression at the juvenile stage compared to the control group. We examined... |

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). The initial body weights were 8.2, 11.6 and 17.3 g for common dentex, sea bass and sea bream, respectively. In all cases, specific growth rates were not significantly affected by dietary treatment, but they varied among species (sea bass 1.7-1.8 %; sea bream 2.1-2.3 %; common dentex 3.1-3.2 %). When comparisons between... |

From 2010 to 2012, 246 data storage tags were deployed on European seabass in the Iroise Natural Marine Park, a marine protected area (MPA) off west Brittany, France. A return rate of 14.6% associated with long time series of data provided new information on fish ecology (e.g. maximum experienced depth greater than 225 m, temperature range 6.80–21.87°C). Depth and temperature series were used to infer individual migration using an innovative hidden Markov model (HMM) especially developed for seabass geolocation. Reconstructed fish tracks revealed that seabass is a partially migratory species, as individuals exhibited either long-distance migrations towards the Bay of Biscay or the Celtic Sea, or residency behaviour in the Iroise Sea. Fidelity to summer... |

253 full-sib families from 33 males and 23 females of European seabass were produced in a partly factorial mating design. All fish were reared in the same tank during 14 months, then 7000 of them were dispatched in four farms to different locations (France, Israel, Italy, Portugal) representing a wide variety of environmental conditions. Around 400 g mean weight, 1177 to 1667 fish in each site were weighed and length was measured. Condition factor (K) was calculated. Pedigrees were redrawn a posteriori using microsatellites markers: parental origin could be retraced for 99.2% of fish. Due to a high incidence of deformities, the useful sample size was reduced to 491-670 fish per site. Maternal effects were small. Using a simple animal model, heritability... |

The role of dietary arginine in affecting nitrogen utilisation and excretion was studied in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed for 72 days with diets differing in protein sources (plant protein-based (PM) and fish-meal-based (FM)). Fish growth performance and nitrogen utilisation revealed that dietary Arg surplus was beneficial only in PM diets. Dietary Arg level significantly affected postprandial plasma urea concentrations. Hepatic arginase activity increased (P < 0.05) in response to dietary Arg surplus in fish fed plant protein diets; conversely ornithine transcarbamylase activity was very low and inversely related to arginine intake. No hepatic carbamoyl phosphate synthetase III activity was detected. Dietary arginine levels did... |
