Examinations of alimentary tract and digestive tubules after feeding give evidence of continuous digestive process in juveniles of Ruditapes philippinarum . Histoenzymologic study of digestive tract suggests important intracellular enzymatic activities in stomacal epithelium, digestive gland and intestinal cells. Main part of intracellular digestion occurred in digestive cells by lysosyme associated with vacuolar system.

Dynamique et enzymologie de la digestion chez l'huitre Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Feeding experiments carried out on Crassostrea gigas allowed the authors to set up the stages and the timing of the movement of food throughout the digestive tract. Various activities involved in digestion (glycosidases, esterases, and peptidases) were investigated histochemically in the digestive tract in order to localize the sites of absorption and the sites of protein and carbohydrate digestion. An explicative model of the different stages of digestion is proposed.

The release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the environment has increased very substantially over the last decades leading to high concentrations in sediments of contaminated areas. To evaluate the consequences of long-term chronic exposure to PAHs, zebrafish were exposed, from their first meal at 5 days post fertilisation until they became reproducing adults, to diets spiked with three PAH fractions at three environmentally relevant concentrations with the medium concentration being in the range of 4.6–6.7 μg g−1 for total quantified PAHs including the 16 US-EPA indicator PAHs and alkylated derivatives. Dietary neutral lipid level and source in marine fish larvae: Effects on digestive physiology and food intake ArchiMer

A growth depressing effect of high dietary neutral lipid levels in marine fish larvae has been reported. This may be a result of a decrease in the efficiency or activity of digestive enzymes, a reduction in absorption efficiency and/or a decrease in food intake. The present work reviews recent studies carried out on commercially valuable species (Atlantic herring, Senegalese sole, European seabass and gilthead seabream) that investigated the effects of neutral lipid level and lipid source (fatty acid composition) on some of these key factors influencing larval growth. The aim of this research was to explain interannual abundance fluctuations observed for Pecten maximus, in the Bay of Brest. Proteolytic enzymes of hepatopancreas of six species of peneids (Penaeus kerathurus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. stylirostris, P. merguiensis and P. vannamei ) have been studied. Some of their physiological variations have been characterised. Increase in acclimation temperature of crustaceans enhances increase of specific activities of proteases. The pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was experimentally exposed to the neurotoxic Alexandrium catenella and a non-producer of PSTs, Alexandrium tamarense (control algae), at concentrations corresponding to those observed during the blooming period. At fixed time intervals, from 0 to 48 h, we determined the clearance rate, the total filtered cells, the composition of the fecal ribbons, the profile of the PSP toxins and the variation of the expression of two a-amylase and triacylglecerol lipase precursor (TLP) genes through semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Early weaning of marine fish larvae onto microdiets: Constraints and perspectives ArchiMer

Weaning small sized marine fish larvae at first feeding directly onto compound pellets is still difficult, while good results can be obtained when used in combination with live prey or when a prefeeding period on live prey is provided up to a size of about 2-3 mg. Microdiets are generally well ingested as their acceptability and visual detection may be improved using feeding activators and increasing good perception contrast. In theory, food may be processed to have a correct nutritional balance, selection of high digestible components is very important as larval digestive system is not fully functional during the first 2 or 3 weeks of life.

Snakes that can ingest prey that are proportionally large have high metabolic rates during digestion. This great increase in metabolic rate (specific dynamic action - SDA) may create a significant augment in the animal's body temperature. The present study investigated postprandial thermogenesis in Bothrops moojeni. Briefly, two groups of snakes were fed meals equivalent to 17 ± 3% and 32 ± 5% of their body weight and were observed for 72 hours, in which thermal images of each snake were taken with an infrared camera in a thermostable environment with a constant air temperature of 30°C.
