Vertical and horizontal extension of the oxygen minimum zone in the easterns south Pactific Ocean Gayana
Schneider,Wolfgang; Fuenzalida,Rosalino; Garcés-Vargas,José; Bravo,Luis; Lange,Carina.
Recent high-resolution hydrographic measurements (1976-2001) from the eastern South Pacific (ESP) were employed combined with high-resolution data from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment to evaluate the vertical and horizontal extension of the OMZ (oxygen minimum zone, < 20 µmol kg-1) there. Of the six permanent hypoxic regions in the world oceans, the ESP OMZ is volumetrically the fourth largest, occupying 2.74 x 10(6) km³ and accounting for ~11% globally. Examples of variability in the vertical position of the OMZ in the water-column and also in its intensity offshore central Chile will be addressed. We conclude that the OMZ in the ESP is partly based on old, low-oxygen waters from intermediate depths of the North Pacific Ocean, which were further...

Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Spectrophotometric Winkler determination of dissolved oxygen: re-examination of critical factors and reliability ArchiMer
Labasque, Thierry; Chaumery, Christian; Aminot, Alain; Kergoat, Gilles.
The spectrophotometric iodine measurement for oxygen determination by the Winkler method is re-examined for theoretical and operational aspects. It is shown that the selection of an isobestic point for measuring the mixture of iodine and tri-iodide in the solution enhances reliability. The wavelength value of 466 nm was selected after a spectrum study. Then, performances are assessed by mean of statistical approach based on repeated standardization curves at the isobestic point compared with other wavelengths. At 466 nm, the method is linear up to about 1000 mumol kg(-1) of O-2. Optimization and validation of the spectrophotometric method is realized through a robustness study based on factors that may alter the results (temperature, reagent volumes,...

Etude de la matière organique et demande en oxygène des sédiments en baie de vilaine ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel.
After the fish mortality through an anoxia, which occured during the summer of 1982 in the bay of Vilaine, the oxygen consumption of the sediment was investigated during spring and summer. It was found moderately important, submitted to limited evolutions along time and on different zones. A significant correlation with the organic carbon content of sediment could not be established. The oxygen consumption of the bottom waters was approached. In the bay of Vilaine as a whole, it was found more important than the sediment consumption. It could vary in a wide range, till leading to pronounced hypoxias, especially during phytoplankton. (Not controlled OCR)

Observation of oxygen ventilation into deep waters through targeted deployment of multiple Argo-O 2 floats in the north-western Mediterranean Sea in 2013 ArchiMer
Coppola, L.; Prieur, L.; Taupier-letage, I.; Estournel, C.; Testor, P.; Lefevre, D.; Belamari, S.; Le Reste, Serge; Taillandier, V..
During the winter 2013, an intense observation and monitoring was performed in the north-western Mediterranean Sea to study deep water formation process that drives thermohaline circulation and biogeochemical processes (HYMEX SOP2 and DEWEX projects). To observe intensively and continuously the impact of deep convection on oxygen (O2) ventilation, an observation strategy was based on the enhancement of the Argo-O2 floats to monitor the offshore dense water formation area (DWF) in the Gulf of Lion prior to and at the end of the convective period (December 2012 to April 2013). The intense O2 measurements performed through shipborne CTD casts and Argo-O2 floats deployment revealed an O2 inventory rapidly impacted by mixed layer (ML) deepening on the month...

Decadal reanalysis of biogeochemical indicators and fluxes in the North West European shelf-sea ecosystem ArchiMer
Ciavatta, S.; Kay, S.; Saux-picart, S.; Butenschon, M.; Allen, J. I..
This paper presents the first decadal reanalysis simulation of the biogeochemistry of the North West European shelf, along with a full evaluation of its skill, confidence, and value. An error-characterized satellite product for chlorophyll was assimilated into a physical-biogeochemical model of the North East Atlantic, applying a localized Ensemble Kalman filter. The results showed that the reanalysis improved the model simulation of assimilated chlorophyll in 60% of the study region. Model validation metrics showed that the reanalysis had skill in matching a large data set of in situ observations for 10 ecosystem variables. Spearman rank correlations were significant and higher than 0.7 for physical-chemical variables (temperature, salinity, and oxygen),...

Low oxygen levels can help to prevent the detrimental effect of acute warming on mitochondrial efficiency in fish ArchiMer
Thoral, Elisa; Roussel, Damien; Chinopoulos, Christos; Teulier, Loïc; Salin, Karine.
Aerobic metabolism of aquatic ectotherms is highly sensitive to fluctuating climates. Many mitochondrial traits exhibit phenotypic plasticity in response to acute variations in temperature and oxygen availability. These responses are critical for understanding the effects of environmental variations on aquatic ectotherms' performance. Using the European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, we determined the effects of acute warming and deoxygenation in vitro on mitochondrial respiratory capacities and mitochondrial efficiency to produce ATP (ATP/O ratio). We show that acute warming reduced ATP/O ratio but deoxygenation marginally raised ATP/O ratio, leading to a compensatory effect of low oxygen availability on mitochondrial ATP/O ratio at high temperature. The...

Review of grow-out techniques under tropical conditions: Experience of Thailand on seabass (Lates calcarifer ) and grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus) ArchiMer
Tookwinas, S.
Seabass and grouper have been reared in cages in coastal waters in Thailand for 10 years. The fingerlings are nursed for a month in nylon nursing cages. Then, the juvenile fish are reared in culture cages which can be stationary or floating. The cage is usually 5 x 5 x 2 metres. The stocking density is around 500 to 2000 fish per cage. The survival rate is approximately 80%. The selling price at the culture site is 80 baht and 250 baht per kg for sea bass and grouper respectively. The culture method and economics of culture are explained.

Ecological model of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel shelf for Environmental Status assessment Part 1: Nutrients, phytoplankton and oxygen ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Dussauze, Morgan; Dumas, Franck; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Garnier, Valerie; Lecornu, Fabrice; Repecaud, Michel.
European directives (Water Framework Directive - WFD and Marine Strategy Framework Directive - MSFD) require a regular survey of several descriptors of the Environmental Status of coastal waters of the North-east Atlantic Ocean. Especially for the MSFD, which may concern large continental shelf areas where measurements are scarce, realistic ecological models can help assessing the Environmental Status. The ECO-MARS3D model of the pelagic ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel continental shelf (NE Atlantic) has been developed for these applied purposes and validated against various types of historic data. This first paper deals with the basic biogeochemical version, which contains inorganic nutrients (NH4, NO3, PO4, Si(OH)4), three...

Premiers résultats sur l'hydrologie, l'oxygène dissous et les pigments photosynthétiques en Manche Occidentale après l'échouage de l"Amoco Cadiz" ArchiMer
Aminot, Alain; Kerouel, Roger.
During the cruises "SUROIT 1", "SUROIT 3" and "THALIA 1", many analyses of dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll have been carried out in order to ascertain some effects of oil spill of "AMOCO CADIZ" on oxygen concentrations and phytoplancton behaviour. These first results show an under-saturation of oxygen, four weeks after stranding, in sea-water standing between 10 to 20 milles eastward of "AMOCO CADIZ". These data allow to do some considerations about oxydation of hydrocarbons in sea-water. In estuaries, especially Aber Wrac'h, one of the most polluted, the analyses do not show obvious anomaly one month after oil spill. Quantitative results on chlorophyll "a" and phaeopigments don't seem to show any noticeable disturbance, neither off, nor near the coast,...

Effects of environmental conditions on the sessile existence of an estuarine sediment bacterium. ArchiMer
Geesey, G; Salas, S; Mittelman, M.
A submerged glass coverslip technique was developed to determine dissolved organic nutrient uptake by adherent cells of a sediment isolate of Enterobacter cloacae . Cells which colonized the coverslips in swirling culture flasks during anaerobic growth remained firmly attached during manipulations employed to determine uptake of radiolabeled glucose by the adherent population. The attached cells were capable of a more rapid rate of glucose uptake than free cells. Lineweaver-Burk plots demonstrated different glucose uptake kinetics for the 2 cell populations. The data suggest that physiological changes occur in cells soon after they become attached to surfaces. These changes appear to enhance the metabolic activity of the adherent population.

In 2009, following approval of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC), the European Commission (EC) created task groups to develop guidance for eleven quality descriptors that form the basis for evaluating ecosystem function. The objective was to provide European countries with practical guidelines for implementing the MSFD, and to produce a Commission Decision that encapsulated key points of the work in a legal framework. This paper presents a review of work carried out by the eutrophication task group, and reports our main findings to the scientific community. On the basis of an operational, management-oriented definition, we discuss the main methodologies that could be used for coastal and marine eutrophication assessment....

Investigations carried out in both Corsica lagoons Diana and Urbino during the period from January to August 1985, permitted to define the main characteristics of microplankton cycle. Two phytoplanktonic blooms have been observed, first in winter, second less important in July-August. Any correlation cannot be observed between phytoplanktonic cycle or one its main components, and both environmental variables temperature and salinity. However dissolved oxygen ratio may be subject to large summer variations, drifting towards until ecological desequilibrious.

Effects of the interannual variations in the flood pulse mediated by hypoxia tolerance: the case of the fish assemblages in the upper Paraná River floodplain Neotropical Ichthyology
Petry,Ana Cristina; Abujanra,Fabiane; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Julio Jr.,Horácio Ferreira; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
The effects of the duration of the floods on abiotic variables and attributes of species tolerant and intolerant to hypoxia (STH and SIH respectively) were evaluated in rivers and lakes of the upper Paraná River. Fish were sampled once a year, in six sampling stations, during the high water period from 2000 to 2003. There were overall reductions in dissolved oxygen levels and increases in transparency of water in lakes in years of moderate floods. The duration of floods influenced species differentially based on their tolerance to hypoxia: in moderate floods, richness of STH increased and numerical abundance and biomass of SIH reduced significantly. Opposite relationships were detected between dissolved oxygen and the attributes of STH and SIH. Dissolved...
