The relationship between plant density and survival to water stress in seedlings of a legume tree Acta Botanica
Honda,Eliane Akiko; Pilon,Natashi Aparecida Lima; Durigan,Giselda.
ABSTRACT Competition for soil water is one of the major processes that drive the assembly of plant communities, particularly in regions subjected to long dry seasons. The relationship between plant density and soil water competition has strong, but poorly understood, practical implications for population dynamics, restoration and conservation. We planted seedlings of the pioneer legume tree Senegalia polyphylla in containers and assessed the effects of plant density on their resistance to water stress. We completely eliminated the above-ground parts (stem and shoots) of randomly selected plants at 60-days post-planting in order to create three different densities of seedlings. We saturated the soil of the remaining seedlings and then deprived them of...

Behavior of Jatropha curcas L. seeds under osmotic stress: germination and cell cycle activity Agronomy
Brito, Cristiane Dantas de; Loureiro, Marta Bruno; Teles, Clarissa Abreu Santosw; Schuck, Mariane Ruzza; Fernandez, Luzimar Gonzaga; Castro, Renato Delmondez de.
Jatropha curcas is an oil-rich Euphorbiaceae seed species renowned for its apparent tolerance to environmental stresses. It is considered a promising source of renewable feedstock for biodiesel production in the Brazilian semiarid region where crop establishment requires a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to proper seed and plant behavior under water restrictive conditions. This study describes physiological and cytological profiles of J. curcas seeds imbibed in water restriction conditions by means of osmotic stress or osmoconditioning. Seeds were characterized by size, weight, moisture content and dry mass, germinability, and cell cycle activation by means of tubulin and microtubule cytoskeleton accumulation. Osmoconditioning at -0.8 MPa...

Selecting key traits to indicrectly assess common bean growth under water stress CIGR Journal
Fogaça, Alisson Marcos; Barbosa, Eduardo Augusto Agnellos.
Recognize water stress constraints on common bean growth may help to select tolerant genotypes, manage irrigation based on plant necessity and predict losses. This manuscript aims to select key traits that discriminate magnitudes of water stress on common bean and indicates plant growth constrains. To do so, an experiment was set in a greenhouse with two factors: crop evapotranspiration replenishment and cultivars. First factor was comprised of 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150% of crop evapotranspiration replenishment starting at flowering (32 days after germination). The second factor was composed of the cultivars BRS Estilo and IPR Campos Gerais. A randomized block scheme with five replications was used, totalizing 60 experimental units. On the 55th day...

Environmental drivers on leaf phenology of ironstone outcrops species under seasonal climate Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARCIA,LETÍCIA C.; BARROS,FERNANDA V.; LEMOS-FILHO,JOSÉ P..
ABSTRACT Banded iron formations (BIF) have a particular vegetation type and provide a good model system for testing theories related to leaf phenology, due to unique stressful environmental conditions. As a consequence of the stressful conditions of BIF environment, we hypothesize that most species would retain at least some significant canopy cover, even at the end of the dry season, independently of growth form - trees, shrubs, and sub-shrubs. Considering the strong seasonality, we also hypothesize that photoperiod and rainfall act as triggers for leaf fall and leaf flushing in these environments. The majority of the fifteen studied species had a semi-deciduous behavior and shed their leaves mainly during the dry season, with a recovery at the end of...

Role of nonproductive tillers as transient sinks of assimilates in wheat Bragantia
Fioreze,Samuel Luiz; Michelon,Luiz Henrique; Turek,Thaís Lemos; Drun,Robson Pelissari; Dalorsaleta,Julio César Sbardella.
ABSTRACT Although source–sink relationships in wheat are well studied, the performance of tillers as transient sinks is still unclear, especially under stress conditions. Thus, this work aimed to study the yield relationships of wheat stems in contrasting genotypes as affected by tiller treatment under stress conditions. Two experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions using BRS Guamirim (high tillering) and BRS Parrudo (low tillering) wheat cultivars. Four tillering treatments were applied on late tillers in the first growing season (2016) and three in the second (2017): (i) free-tillering, (ii) detillering, (iii) physical suppression (only in the first season) and (iv) “spikes removal”. The main stem and the first four emitted tillers were...

WATER STRESS RESPONSE ON THE ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY IN COWPEA NODULES BJM
Figueiredo,Márcia do Vale B.; Bezerra-Neto,Egídio; Burity,Hélio A..
A greenhouse experiment was carried out aiming to study the effect of water stress on metabolic activity of cowpea nodules at different plant development stages. Cowpea plants were grown in pots with yellow latosol soil under three different matric potentials treatments: -7.0 (control-S1), -70.0 (S2) and <-85.0 KPa (S3). The experimental design was randomized blocks with sub-divided plots, each plot containing a different degree of water stress, divided in sub-plots for the four different developmental stages: E1 (0-15), E2 (15-30), E3 (20-35) and E4 (30-45) days after emmergence. Water stress treatments were applied by monitoring soil water potential using a set of porous cups. The effect of water stress was most harmful to cowpea when it was applied...

Foliar phosphorus supply and CO2 assimilation in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under water deficit Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Santos,Mauro G. dos; Ribeiro,Rafael V.; Teixeira,Marcelo G.; Oliveira,Ricardo F. de; Pimentel,Carlos.
Two common bean cultivars were grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. Plants were submitted to a foliar Pi spray two days before suspending irrigation, what enhanced net CO2 assimilation rate of Ouro Negro cultivar but did not change significantly the photosynthesis of Carioca cultivar under both water deficit and rehydration periods. The results revealed that a foliar Pi spray induced an up-regulation of photosynthesis in common bean under mild water deficit, with this effect being genotype-dependent.

Enhanced in vitro drought tolerance of Solanum tuberosum and Solanum commersonii plants overexpressing the ScCBF1 gene Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pino,María Teresa; Ávila,Andrea; Molina,Andrea; Jeknic,Zoran; Chen,Tony H.H.
Cultivated potato crops are sensitive to drought stress, reducing yield and tuber quality when the soil water potential drops to -0.3 MPa. However, drought not only affects plant growth and physiological activity, but this stress also induces biochemical and molecular changes in the cellular gene expression profile. triggering genes that play a direct role in plant protection and gene regulation. The genes involved in regulation include C-repeat Binding Factors/Dehydration responsive element binding (CBF/DREB) transcription factors, which increase cold, drought and salt tolerance in different plant species. The aim of this research was to evaluate whether the overexpression of the ScCBF1 gene from Solanum commersonii enhances drought stress tolerance in...

PERIN,Ellen Cristina; MESSIAS,Rafael da Silva; GALLI,Vanessa; BOROWSKI,Joyce Moura; SOUZA,Esmael Rickes de; AVILA,Liziane Oliveira de; BAMBERG,Adilson Luis; ROMBALDI,Cesar Valmor.
Abstract Due mainly to the taste and appearance, the strawberry stands out in relation to the other fruits. and for the presence of antioxidant compounds. However, little attention has been devoted to the impact of abiotic stresses on the quality of strawberry and its agronomic performance. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of two levels of DS (L1 - 70% and L2 - 50% of crop evapotranspiration) on the quality of strawberry fruit and on some agronomic and physiological variables. There was a dose-dependent reduction in the evaluated agronomic variables in the DS plants, and the content of some minerals in the fruit and leaves was modified. The activities of the oxidative enzymes were higher in the fruit of L2 treatment, and the content of...

Background Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important economic and oilseed crop. Long-term rainless conditions and seasonal droughts can limit peanut yields and were conducive to preharvest aflatoxin contamination. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which peanut responds and adapts to water limited conditions, we isolated and characterized several drought-induced genes from peanut roots using a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) technique. Results RNA was extracted from peanut roots subjected to a water stress treatment (45% field capacity) and from control plants (75% field capacity), and used to generate an SSH cDNA library. A total of 111 non-redundant sequences were obtained, with 80 unique transcripts showing homology to known genes...

Network analysis of ABA-dependent and ABA-independent drought responsive genes in Arabidopsis thaliana Genet. Mol. Biol.
Liu,Shiwei; Lv,Zongyou; Liu,Yihui; Li,Ling; Zhang,Lida.
Abstract Drought is one of the most severe abiotic factors restricting plant growth and yield. Numerous genes functioning in drought response are regulated by abscisic acid (ABA) dependent and independent pathways, but knowledge of interplay between the two pathways is still limited. Here, we integrated transcriptome sequencing and network analyses to explore interplays between ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways responding to drought stress in Arabidopsis thaliana. We identified 211 ABA-dependent differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 1,118 ABA-independent DEGs under drought stress. Functional analysis showed that ABA-dependent DEGs were significantly enriched in expected biological processes in response to water deprivation and ABA stimulus,...

Increased synthesis of galactinol and raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) has been reported in vegetative tissues in response to a range of abiotic stresses. In this work, we evaluated the transcriptional profile of a Coffea canephora galactinol synthase gene (CcGolS1) in two clones that differed in tolerance to water deficit in order to assess the contribution of this gene to drought tolerance. The expression of CcGolS1 in leaves was differentially regulated by water deficit, depending on the intensity of stress and the genotype. In clone 109A (drought-susceptible), the abundance of CcGolS1 transcripts decreased upon exposure to drought, reaching minimum values during recovery from severe water deficit and stress. In contrast, CcGolS1 gene expression...
