Effects of some kernel factors on palm kernel oil extraction using a screw press CIGR Journal
Ezeoha, Sunday Louis.
Several factors are known to affect mechanical oil expression from oilseeds. In this study, the influence of kernel moisture content (KMC), kernel heating temperature (KHT), kernel heating duration (KHD) and kernel particle size (KPS) on palm kernel oil (PKO) yield by a mixed variety of oil-palm kernels using a locally fabricated screw press was investigated. The one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) experimental approach was employed. Design-Expert 8P (Version 8.0.6) software was used for statistical analysis of data. Within the range of values of variables studied, the results showed that at 5% significance level only kernel size significantly affected PKO yield. Thus, KPS is a critical factor in PKO extraction using the screw press. Oil-palm kernels should not be...

Fusarium poae and mycotoxins: potential risk for consumers Boletín de la Sociedad
Dinolfo,María I; Stenglein,Sebastián A.
Fusarium head blight is an important disease affecting cereal grains. Fusarium graminearum is the major causal agent of this disease around the world, but some researchers have documented the increased importance of F. poae. Moreover, F. poae presence may be accompanied of its mycotoxins production, being able to produce trichothecenes of type A diacetoxyscirpenol, monoacetoxyscirpenol, scirpentriol, HT-2 toxin, T-2 toxin and neosolaniol, as well as the type B nivalenol and fusarenone-X. Outside the trichotecenes group, F. poae has been reported to produce enniatins, beauvericin and moniliformin. Due to F. poae may be present in cereal grains used for food and processed products, the aims of this review is to recognize the importance of the hazard effects...

Modifications in the chemical compounds and sensorial attributes of Engraulis anchoita fillet during marinating process Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Yeannes,Maria Isabel; Casales,Maria Rosa.
Marinated fish are fish products preserved by the combined action of salt and organic acids. The objective of this work was to analyze the variations in the chemical compounds of anchovy fillets that give them sensorial characteristics during the marinating process of Engraulis anchoita. The protein content decreased slightly and the TVB-N level decreased significantly in both the brining and marinating stages. In the marinating stage an increase in the total free aminoacids was observed. The NBV level in the brining and marinating solutions increased during these stages due to the solubilization of the non-protein nitrogenous compounds and the degradation of some protein compounds. The decrease of the contents of protein and TVB-N, and the increase of the...

Interactions between distant places are increasingly widespread and influential, often leading to unexpected outcomes with profound implications for sustainability. Numerous sustainability studies have been conducted within a particular place with little attention to the impacts of distant interactions on sustainability in multiple places. Although distant forces have been studied, they are usually treated as exogenous variables and feedbacks have rarely been considered. To understand and integrate various distant interactions better, we propose an integrated framework based on telecoupling, an umbrella concept that refers to socioeconomic and environmental interactions over distances. The concept of telecoupling is a logical extension of research on...

Mixtures of Chemical Pollutants at European Legislation Safety Concentrations: How Safe Are They? ArchiMer

The risk posed by complex chemical mixtures in the environment to wildlife and humans is increasingly debated, but has been rarely tested under environmentally relevant scenarios. To address this issue, two mixtures of 14 or 19 substances of concern (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, a surfactant, and a plasticizer), each present at its safety limit concentration imposed by the European legislation, were prepared and tested for their toxic effects. The effects of the mixtures were assessed in 35 bioassays, based on 11 organisms representing different trophic levels. A consortium of 16 laboratories was involved in performing the bioassays. The mixtures elicited quantifiable toxic effects on some of the test systems...

Effects of temperature and salinity on the survival of Bonamia ostreae parasite infecting falt oyster Ostrea edulis in sea water ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Bond, Celine; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Chollet, Bruno; Morga, Benjamin; Ferrand, Sylvie; Robert, Maeva; Renault, Tristan.
Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. The parasite has been described in different ecosystems from estuaries to open sea and no clear correlations could be demonstrated between the development of the disease and environmental parameters such as temperature or salinity. The parasite life cycle, including its survival outside the host is not completely known. Nevertheless, the infection can be directly transmitted by cohabitation between infected and non infected oysters suggesting that the parasite does not need intermediate host to complete its cycle. In the present study, the impact of temperature and salinity on the survival of purified parasites...

Electronic individual identification of zebrafish using radio frequency identification (RFID) microtags ArchiMer
Cousin, Xavier; Daouk, Tarek; Pean, Samuel; Lyphout, Laura; Schwartz, Marie-elise; Begout, Marie-laure.
Although individual electronic tagging using passive integrated acoustic (PIT) tags is established, it is mainly for fish >60. mm in length and is unsuitable for fish of <30. mm, like zebrafish. We used radio frequency identification (RFID) microtags (1 mm in diameter and 6 mm in length, with a mass of similar to 10 mg) to individually identify juvenile zebrafish (length 16-42 mm, mass 138-776 mg) for the first time, and studied the effects of intracoelomic implantation on fish survival and microtag loss, growth, spawning and exploratory behaviour. After 5.5 months, both high survival (82%) and low microtag loss (11%) were achieved. The smallest surviving fish weighed 178 mg, and success in microtag reading was 73% for the size class 350-450 mg (26...

Regionális együttműködések fejlettséget kiegyenlítő hatásai AgEcon
Szabo, Barna.
- On the basis of corrected-aggregated coefficients from regression calculations and the precision of collected data it can be stated that differences between national...

DINÂMICA DA AGRICULTURA NO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO ENTRE 1990-2005: Uma análise através do modelo “shift share” AgEcon
Felipe, Fabio Isaias; Maximiano, Maria Lucia.
